The RED Komodo was designed for special use applications such as gimbals, drone, crane, etc. last week I flew my Komodo for the first time with my buddy Mike Gentilini Jr. of VidMuze Cinema on his Freefly Systems Alta 8 Drone. It was fun to DP this shoot, and I look forward to shooting something more legit with this in the future.
Instead of just shooting a bunch of high and wide aerials Mike and I decided to shoot something with more parallax. We originally intended only aerials but decided to incorporate an actress into the shoot which called for getting shots on the ground with Mike operating the MOVI pro. I want to thank Andrea Laing for being our on screen talent for this camera test. Although a very simple idea, we were able to capture several "Scenes" with different lighting scenarios. We shot for just over 2 hours and this is what I edited together. My hope is to show you how Komodo handles several natural lighting scenarios over magic hour and into dusk.
I will be sharing some BTS from this too for those interested.
Although the footage looked great straight out of camera, I decided to color balance and simple grade this footage. I will have a 2nd video showing the straight out of camera , RWG/L3g10 , and graded images.

This is the best Komodo footage I've seen. None of the other videos I've seen really sold me but this one did. Proof that its all about who's behind the camera.

Awesome! I shot a medium format roll of analog Kodak Portra 800 on sunday. I really have the feeling the new Komodo sensor and film stock have so much in common. The dynamic range, the colors, the highlights and just the overall feeling is so film like. Thank you for sharing this footage with us and I can‘t wait to get my Komodo 😍

This is my favorite Komodo footage yet-- nice work! And it's also a great demonstration of what the camera was designed to do: easily mount on a gimbal or drone while still recording in r3d format that matches the bigger cameras in the Red line. Thanks for continuing to share your work here.

Great footage Tim. Are you able to get all of the camera scopes seen on the internal LCD on your external monitor? Also i'm assuming due to the ND selection that we must use our IR cut ?

Some good shots, but why is there so much veiling in some of the images. A lot of contrast loss. Is it the Tokina IRND filters? Or is it flare? Thanks for the tests.

I think this is saying more about the Tokina lens than it is about the komodo. we've seen the footage shot with komodo and sigma 18-35mm combo and nobody was impressed, but when you put on this 5000 lens, it looks great. So this is to say (and also to myself) maybe look to invest in lenses before you invest in the camera and think you'll still get the same great look. Awesome footage btw

The droning is really good, model looks good, footage looks good also but the pocket 6k definitely looks better than this. Am not trying to hate on this camera neither do i like comparing cameras, but its just that RED always tends to have their own look (just like ARRI) but this feels more like any other camera (which isn't necessary a bad thing)

So many mixed feelings....like I want the R3D raw 12 bit. but the image quality just doesn't scream $6000 when other competitors have the same specs, (some even better) for $2000-$3000 less ....what do yall think?

AytotheM M. This is RAW. It is a 16 bit sensor, this 16-bit RAW. If it were 12-bit RAW like BM, it would in fact, not be RAW.... just like BMRAW is not RAW. This shows incredible dynamic range.

@@JustinPhillip Thank you. RAW means it takes the data directly from the sensor and does not manipulate it in any way. BM uses a 14bit sensor but their "BMRAW" is only a 12 bit file. That means they have processed the image and removed 2-bits of color data. That means that the "RAW" you are using is not RAW but actually processed data. It may have RAW features, but it isn't RAW. Keep this in mind, BM compresses their "BMRAW" in camera. RED owns the patent for compressed RAW in camera. Which means, BM can't compress "RAW" in camera. It isn't 100% confirmed as to why but I would say it is a very strong guess that this is why BM chose to process their sensor RAW to 12-bit, so they can avoid a serious lawsuit. Red's sensor is actually a 16-bit sensor and their REDRAW is a 16-bit CODEC. The only thing Red does is compress it in camera. Now, BM can make a beautiful image with those 12 bits of color data, but it isn't technically RAW..

A bit noisy in some frames, may be RU-vid compression, although there is already comparisons with other cameras in the market and it seems Komodo struggles a bit in low lights, also there is an interesting green tint in this footage, not sure that is from the grade. I really want to have a real conversation on whether or not a small indie videographer/creator such as myself should get this as their A cam - I have always wanted a red but I just don’t want that to be the only reason - I also think this footage looks really beautiful

@@Jackwyldes I am a doc shooter and some other Indie stuff as well. I own a DSMC2 Helium and have one of the first Komodos for testing. I would say you could use this for an A CAM without exception. The R3D RAW alone is a great reason. The CODEC provides so much latitude. I have shot FS700, FS7 as well as a bunch of Canon and Panasonics. The only thing that Sony/Pano/Canon really has an advantage on at least for me is better Autofocus, which as a DOC shooter for the stuff I shoot would be so much appreciated. But I can say the new Phase detect Autofocus is pretty great...now when they get the continues mode dialed in it will be great

I am on the list to get a stormtrooper and am incredibly excited and nervous because although yes it's an "entry-level" RED camera it's still a significant investment for me personally. I want to push myself and my work, I want the dynamic range. I want to start learning how to work with RED Raw so I can keep up with industry standards. So far the community has seemed very helpful.... albeit this camera appears to have a lot of haters, I think that like the BMPCC4k, once this is really out there and working peoples minds will be changed!
