RED Komodo vs RED Epic-W

In this video I put my $8,000 RED Komodo 6k setup up against my $35,000 RED Epic-W 8k setup to see how they perform next to each other and to see if the Komodo is good enough to replace the Epic-W. Who wins? Both cameras are known for their high quality image sensors, but they each have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. We'll be taking a look at the features of each camera, including their resolution, frame rates, dynamic range, color science, and more. We'll also be testing the cameras in real-world shooting scenarios to see how they perform in various lighting conditions and situations. By the end of this video, you'll have a better understanding of which camera might be the better choice for your next film project. Looks pretty sick! The global shutter must be nice too. One thing I don’t like about reds in general is that you can’t downsample to use lower resolutions while still using the full sensor like I can on my Blackmagic pocket 6K. That’s probably not a problem for you since you take advantage of the highest resolution but for me I like being able to still shoot 4K and sometimes even just 1080 while still using the full sensor.

you didn't mention the recording noise of the fan speed? id say you missed out on a real time test, to find out which fan speed is louder... like how much will the audio guys be annoyed while recording, hmmm...

Was the white balance different? Or is there a substantial color shift towards green at ISO 3200 on the Komodo?

i'm going to buy a red komodo or the EPIC-W, what can u recommend for festival shootings? the heavier epic-w is nice for run and gun because you hold it more stable, yes its a bit heavier but not that big of a deal. it helps for support. but i love the new cfast and updated support for the komodo. and also the low light of the epic-w is nice... this video made me think about it again :)

can you make a video where you compare the 1dx mark iii vs komodo vs canon c70. can't choose between those 3? and the new adapter for the c70 (RF speedbuster) can also be used on the komodo. because then you just have a full frame camera?

There is a difference in dynamic range. Look at the window of house. Almost blown out compared to epic w

Yep, the testing on the Komodo shows about 12.5 stops of dynamic range; larger REDs are reported to be 16.5.

@@raymondparsons589it’s not that wide of a gap. We’re talking about 12.5 on Komodo vs 13-14 on all other reds.

I noticed a slight increase in the contrast in the Komodo. And maybe a slightly warmer tone. To be honest I actually prefer the slight increase in contrast and also the warmer tone. the Komodo is mindblowing for its price!

By looking at the comparisons, they are fairly equal in image quality. The price in the two cameras suggest there is a catch somewhere?

For dynamic range did you do an extensive test of under and over exposing to see if you can recover data? If yes, are the sensors exactly the same? How many stops under and over were useable?

how easy is it to is it easy to move form canons and sny to Red, I've been really hesitant that it will create lots of problems for me and makes thing difficult and the learning will ake long as long as the work flow for editing.

I really just think the white balance was off. could be an issue on my viewing end too tho. after all. this is RU-vid. displaying red raw footage here in 1080p is like funneling Niagara Falls thru a coffee straw

Canon c300mk2 has WAY better autofocus. So does Sony A7Sii. If you are doing vlogs or small form content c300 is great. But if you need a camera on a small gimbal c300 only works on the larger Gimbals. I'm not a fan of the Black Magic from a reliability, durability and ROI depreciation standpoint. Not saying they can't get good images but as a pro who works with 20+ varieties of cameras a year, on a hectic you really need something that can hold up and deal with the hard use.

Perhaps you should be worrying about the film rather than the camera. Stick with what you have. I would never get a camera which does not have XLR inputs.

Between this and the Sony fx6 which is the more cinematic camera? I have a gh5 with canon lenses so the komodo would be easier to move to, but i've heard amazing things about the Sony fx6

Interesting enough, I’ve had incredible low light performance on my Komodo so far. And if you look at more comparisons, (Tim dausts videos are lovely) the Komodo is actually better in low light compared to the helium 8k sensor. Not sure why it looked so rough here.

@@filmbythomas All-in, it’s still a $15,000 camera. It’s also limited to HD and weighs as much as a Buick. I appreciate Arri as much as the next guy, but the Alexa worship is a bit overdone. If it came down to a used Alexa or Komodo, I’d buy a Scarlet-W. Less than $6K complete, and the most dramatic image of the three.

i enjoy your videos, but your shooting style is very medicore . I hope you're constantly learning and finding new ways to make your image look more interesting . You have a lot of potential to have a big platform online, your cinematography needs improving and everything will follow.
