I'm a 74 year old, female, avid listener to your conversations. Have been eating mostly plants since reading Diet for a New America decades ago. Would love it if you would throw in advice you might give to your mothers in these podcasts. Thanks for your voice of reason and references to facts and evidence!

As a man in his 60's who worked out for strength and aesthetics in my 20's, 30's, and 40's, and regrets it.... switch to exercise for longevity, flexibility, and function! :). That's what I have been working on for the past several years, making great progress, but wishing that I would have done this all along!
@kyleleighton9726
@kyleleighton9726 10 месяцев назад
How has your workout routine changed? I agree on switching away from aesthetics but an emphasis on strength is still important. Strength, cardio, and mobility are all equally important. Peter Attia emphasizes this heavily. What has this shift in focus meant for you?
@paulspanish-he2ki
@paulspanish-he2ki 10 месяцев назад
I am using a primal movement method that, by default, develops strength as well. My primary reason is the focus on movement, flexibility, recuperation, and strength. Moreover, this is a very fun way of using the body!! This has helped my body to open up more and improve the mobility that I lost due to lifting too much when I was younger. I live in Colorado and spend a lot of time in the mountains, which is why mobility and strength are important for me. BTW, even though aesthetics isn't my focus, I think that I look better than ever. @@kyleleighton9726

I've had a weird side effect of creatine. Every time I cycle on, my blood pressure spikes dramatically after a few weeks. I usually average 108/64, but when I cycle on to creatine, my blood pressure starts averaging 130/80 until I come off of it a few weeks. I can't find any literature to back this up, but have spoken to a few friends that have the same response. I'm curious how many individuals actively monitor blood pressure and if this is more common in some individuals who are salt sensitive.

My only regret is that I probably (definitely) will not be around to see you guys thirty years from now to see how you have adapted to some of the aging challenges. I noted that the Danes have a very different dietary recommendation for their older population. Anyway. This was a really good session and I found myself laughing often. Thank you!

Thanks Simon and Drew for bringing up all these insightful studies! I am living proof that the portfolio diet eating pattern works - I’m 31, in a healthy weight and a runner, and have been told by doctors that my high cholesterol was a genetic condition throughout my entire life (even though I was vegetarian and exercised, I couldn’t lower it). I shifted to a plant-based, whole foods diet about 1 year ago and implemented the guidelines of the portfolio diet (didn’t supplement with plant sterols) and just had a reduction in my cholesterol from 251mg/dl (6.49mmol/l) to 180mg/dl (4.65mmol/l). This is the first time in my life that my cholesterol is within the “normal range”. Cannot thank Simon enough for this podcast and for how much healthier I became in the past year I have been listening to it!❤

I also was a gym rat for twenty five years then a drinker for fifteen and the last three years have been on the road to recovery. I think genetics play a big role in my health. Drew, there's also the reverse perspective - the Japanese population *did* get taller overall after adopting more of Western dietary patterns after WWII - especially dairy can trigger more growth including in height, and no, it's not a healthy thing as we've been programmed to think. Bigger frame size can definitely be the result of environment and yeah, accompanies rise in lifestyle disease...

Taurine is an essential amino acid that declines dramatically as we age. It’s very popular in the anti-aging community and being studied extensively. Five grams will lower high blood pressure. I take 4-5 grams a day mixed in with 5 grams of creatine monohydrate and 5 grams of glycine.( glycine has a sweet flavour) all mixed together with ten grams of psyllium husks followed by a tablespoon of olive oil. Taurine is not just important for human health but if cats don’t get taurine they’ll go blind and die unless they are eating meat such as mice. I don’t eat meat everyday so I take a heme iron supplement with 1000 mg of vitamin C for absorption. I take 1000 mg of vitamin C after every meal for iron absorption. I consume at lot of saturated fat where I get most of my calories from. Three tablespoons of olive oil a day, three tablespoons of mct 8 oil, 1-2 litres a week of heavy cream. I’ve been eating very little vegetables and just began introducing some carbohydrates like oatmeal and rye flakes which I soak overnight with salt and organic apple vinegar to remove the phytic acid. I have been eating this way for three months but I’ve also been making and consuming a lot of Dr. Davis high probiotic yogurt to rebuild my gut microbiome and no chlorine water or fluoride products or antiseptic mouthwash so as not to harm the mouth microbiome which is almost as important as gut microbiome for good health. Having 5-7 saunas a week has been shown to extend the lifespan by fifteen years according to studies conducted in Finland without any special diet! I’ll get my blood tested next month to compare to four months ago when my cholesterol and blood sugar was excellent. I except the same results if not better.

Hey Simon! Love your work! I've been doing some research on types of fats and its effects on blood lipids and CVD risk and was shocked by this allegedly "state of the art review" on SFAs annd CVD. The type of language and terms used, plus the audacious affirmations it makes made me step back a little and wonder. Actually, I'm quite surprised it was published on the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Are you familiar with it? Really liked this show, the fact that you explore a number of different topics in one go makes a nice change (much though I enjoy the deep dives too). I especially liked the part about sitting on the floor and doing movement snacks. It would be great if you could get Petra Fisher on the show. She does a lot of work on “natural movement”, lots of floor sitting, hip (and all joints) mobility etc. I think it would be a fascinating complement to the many other shows you’ve done on exercise.

very interesting. im well into my snap back from a T2 diagnosis in april this year. Should note I am whole foods plant based now 90% of the time. Pretty much as described: 190lb (76-77kg) @ 6"1' so not super overweight. Still lost 25 lbs and now my glucose is regularly in range (most recent HbA1C was 6.5) without metformin. Very key though is even moderate exercise. Anything really will help. Obviously you will get the best results with sustained physical exercise but walking after meals is a good start.

It probably wouldn't be an impossible feat of engineering with cable machines. Interesting concept for sure. I expect someone will make that happen on a small scale within the decade. You could easily power the lights with that energy at the very least. Free weights would be much more difficult though. Physical jobs have always existed that pair productivity with exercise. Anecdotally, any job that has me moving outside is better than being stuck inside. Tree removal does wonders for my mental health, but even delivering pizzas outside was better for me than an indoor sitting desk job. If you have land or even a community plot, you can always plant food. It's hard for me to imagine a form of exercise more in tune with our evolution than farming/collecting firewood.

Simon, I'd be really curious to see if you have any interest in having Robbie and Cyrus from mastering diabetes on your show. When I listen to you describe the findings of Roy taylor, what they have managed to accomplish, with thousands of people now, seems to be even more profound in some regards. For example, their protocol has people eating a very high carbohydrate diet, keeping fat, especially saturated fat, very very low, and folks are able to eat normally and without restriction and accomplish the same thing that Roy Taylor has accomplished with severe restriction. People with type 1 diabetes on their protocol, and both of them have type 1, are able to substantially increase their carbohydrate intake while, at the same time, decreasing their insulin use I can't imagine, especially in light of what you are expressing here about the work of Roy taylor, that you would not be interested in exploring further what the folks at mastering diabetes have discovered. Thanks

Simon- just a word of caution to keep in mind. It may not be wise to make a blanket statement such as “there is no deleterious effect on liver function from creatine, even in high doses.” Problem is, we don’t have studies that follow people for 30, 40, 50 years, so while there may not be a deleterious effect in the span of a couple of months, we really have no idea what may happen if someone uses creatine everyday over the course of a lifetime

I would expect that there are significant differences in the metabolic outcomes of the weekend warrior and the person who does all their exercise on Monday and Thursday for example. It probably helps to split that exercise up, even if it's all still done in two days. Even if you did all your moderate-intense cardio and strength training on those days, I'd expect similar metabolic outcomes if you did nothing else the rest of the week. Add 10,000 easy daily steps (zone1) on the off days, and you're probably very close to optimal. No way to know yet. I've been trending towards full body training splits 2 times a week lately, especially since I started focusing on strength.

a lot here on Creatine, but when I took 5g a day, I saw my Creatinine levels go up quite a bit, which affected my estimated GFR, so my doctor asked me to stop supplementing (I was also on a statin at the time too, and have come off that too while we test for a change in GFR - off both for 12 weeks) - I'm looking for any papers that explain the safety for Kidney health in relation to this phenomenon, though I suspect that using Creatinine for estimated GFR might also not be super robust for Kidney Health? Anyone got any evidence I can read through on this subject?
@TheProofWithSimonHill
@TheProofWithSimonHill 10 месяцев назад
Creatinine as an estimate of GFR is just an estimate, when it goes up because you're taking creatine that is just an artifact of the equation and does not reflect your kidneys actually being affected. In such cases, using cystatin is a more reliable method (though less used). See table 2 in this for cases where using creatinine as a proxy for GFR is inaccurate. www.ajkd.org/article/S0272-6386(21)00707-1/fulltext
