The Red Mountain Mining District Ghost Town can be found off Highway 550 (the Million Dollar Highway) between Ouray and Silverton.

My Dad worked at these mines, I was born in Durango, Colorado 1951. Still remember my older brother’s taking me sledding. I was probably around 4 yrs old! Live in the mountains in Idaho now, thank you. Luis

Did that trail this past September it was amazing. We were on it after a short rain shower, and got a picture of a double rainbow over one of the mines. Thank you so much for the videos you post. Maybe one of these days I will get the videos we did posted.

Also are there toxic waist from any tailings around there? Just curious.. Loved the guitar music too and the GORGEOUS trees and mountains..

Not sure about that...OH! You may be thinking about Red Mountain PASS, not Red Mountain Mining District. Red Mountain Pass might have had that sign..it's just up the road from this trail. The start of Black Bear Road begins at the summit of Red Mtn. Pass.

What makes you think these are private roads? Of course they aren't private roads, they are National Forest or Bureau of Land Management property. These are well documented Jeep trails. Why not do a bit of research before making stupid comments?

The reason it was called the million dollar highway is, when the workers came across gold they stopped working.

Are you driving on Private Roads without permission from the Owner? If so that is really crappy to tear up all the roads with your jeeps. You should respect people's property and stop jeeping on trails that don't permit you to go on and destroy.

Not sure why you need to bring politics into this, and since I'm a "libtard" as well, perhaps I should indeed be moderating my comments, as you suggest.
