Bobby Lamm, a great veteran of rock n roll. Tremendous song writer, singer and musician. So glad to see the band is still going strong. First 11 albums with the original line up, show me a better band ever! Ground breaking hits and originality!!!!!!

Robert Lamm is the heart and soul of Chicago. I loved him in 1970 and I still do. Myis Beginnings. This song brings back so many good memories of the best year in my life 1974 D.M. I play all Beginnings videos on RU-vid. Thanks.

Robert Lamm was responsible for Chicago's signature sound mostly on the classic early albums. And he wrote most of their best known songs, also a great singer & keyboard player.
I've seen the trombonist James Pankow mostly credited with the horn arrangements. But I don't think Robert Lamm ever gets enough credit for writing a lot of their most iconic songs. I also had a crush on him back in the day.

Pankow wrote some great stuff.... I think Lee and Walter were guys who could have been replaced. They wrote no more than 5 songs combined, and Lee's playing is awful in almost every live show, and there's at least 75 I've heard just from RU-vid. Walter is the more precise, but Lee did right "Call On Me" after Peter made changes to melody/lyrics. It was right after the band laughed the song. Peter must have liked it, because he went to Lee and must have thought it could be salvaged. There's 3 good Chicago books out there. Lots of interview on video, audio, and text.
Great musician. Chicago accent - I can hear it. There is something special about the Tanglewood concert - and Lamm is amazing with the rest of the band.
Green Sombrero Robert is from Brooklyn and moved to Chicago at age (15?) . Hey if you hear old recordings of Peter & Terry, you will hear the Chicago accents. James has a very strong accent as well. James is from Missouri, I think he moved to Chicago when he was age 7.
Robert Lamm is such a fabulous musician & loved the interview. I'm happy that they are still touring in 2016 & had a great time at the Heart & Soul Tour 3.0 in Montreal :)
He still has that Great hair, I've always like't him. He is a true Artist, in his musicianship an all that is still 'Chicago'. He was there in the beginning, part of the Creation of Chicago. The Greatest Band to ever play Rock n Jazz, what a Success they were. 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I really wish a book could be written about these guys. I know there was a recent CNN special on Chicago (Now More Than Ever) I know also Danny Seraphine wrote a book (Street Player) and in the 1991 CD box (Group Portrait) there was a little book written on them as well. All of these guys are in their 70s now. I wish there could be a book written about them in detail. For example from the Chicago III album the song LOWDOWN which both Peter Cetera and Danny Seraphine wrote, Peter stated that Terry went up to him and said “Don’t ever tell anybody I played guitar on this song “ Peter felt Terry had an I don’t care attitude. I’m wondering did Terry ever have any regrets about not doing his best on that song? Did Peter and Terry get along? This is an example of things that I would like to know. The rest of the original members are still alive. I think James William Guercio might be still alive also. A Book needs to be written about this band!!!!!!!
I agree, and I wish more of us fans would pool our resources, quotes, etc... I made a Chicago fan site, but after the band made one ($75 to join), it sorta died. I've read all three books about Chicago, including "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" by Ben Joseph. I know about that quote, and while it's not very nice, I think Peter Cetera cared enough to be in Michelle's documentary. It was the ONLY time he did anything that was associated with Chicago. Cetera seems to have a hard time showing vulnerability, while Robert still talks about his loss. Peter said something kinda "black" after Terry died when he was asked if Terry was going to leave the band. Peter said, "The only way he was leaving the band was in a box!".. I would love to read even a single conversation between those guys. I have a great interview on my channel of Terry. He says, "Peter's voice is always happening" and says "Danny's a lead drummer - he's got so much things going on".
Robert Lamm is one of my all-time favorite composers,along with Duke Ellington,McCoy Tyner, and Stevie Wonder.Honorable Mention: Chucho Valdes and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Check out Chicago 36, people. Lamm wrote half of it, it's a great record. Will remind one of the 70s sound, but more creatively -- that is, without simply repeating it.
The production is very different. It doesn't have that organic sound they had for the first decade. I didn't hear all the jazz/rock/funk/pop with the amazing vocals, with the great guitar. I was disappointed with "Stone of Sissyphus" but I'll probably see them in concert in 2 weeks.
i like that photo, to. it also rightly demonstrates that robert is the best songwriter in the band, and one of the truly underrated rock-pop songwriters of the last 50 years.
Robert Lamm is the heart of Chicago, used to be Terry Kath, albeit every single one of them are superstars: Walter Parazaider, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Pete Cetera. Unfortunately, Danny Seraphine was tough to deal with due to his own belief that he "the leader," and was harsh on the rest of the band. Too bad, he ended up kicked out.

Not too many bands have a City named after them, just amazing, The only other band I can think of is America, they have 2 entire continents named after them, Alabama has a state, I could go on and usually do.....I love Chicago( not the city).

I always thought of Lamm as the Conscience of Chicago because the band’s more political and issue-oriented songs were penned by him. Terry Kath was the band’s soul, and Cetera its voice.
They're done finished .Nothing left but chops .No writing efforts ,no direction, just a revolving door of expendable members that have no connection to Chicago. I've seen enough of them to remember the Old Days.
ROBERT WAS TALKING ABOUT WHEN CHICAGO FIRST STARTED TOURING CANADA IN THE 1960'S WITH SAM & DAVE. HE SAID THAT SAM & DAVE HAD A 20 PIECE BAND THAT STOOD UP ALL THE TIME. ROBERT SAID THAT THE 20 PIECE BAND DID STEPS AND PLAYED HORN CHARTS.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the band Chicago and for the most part, I think Robert Lamm is a talented musician. But he’s also a pompous ass sometimes. I blame him for Cetera and Saraphine leaving the band after they sold their souls to Dave Foster in the 1980s. True, the band was a sinking ship after the passing of Terry Kath, and were dropped by their record label. Foster did help resurrect them into a pop band much that was nothing like their former sound. However it made Cetera the front man of the group which didn’t sit well with Lamm who saw himself as the group’s leader. Cetera would go on to be a successful solo artist and Chicago has not released a decent album since. Foster didn’t care much for Saraphine’s drumming technique, nor dud replacement vocalist Jeff Scheff who suggested Tris Imboden take the sticks. Rather than staying loyal to their founding drummer, Lamm suggested firing Saraphine. Bobby Lamm is an excellent singer/songwriter, but he is also a total prick
so much for the blood oath of never kicking anyone out of the band... Terry's death opened everything up. There's no way they would do any of the shit with Terry around. Foster? Haha, yeah right.. Kicking Danny out - never would have happened under Terry's watch. Robert was always conflicted between art/commercialism, and with Terry gone, he just tried to become the "Critic's Choice". I haven't heard anything good since 1981, and those three years were pretty weak, despite, "Love Was New" (and old really fast)
It has felt like a cover band since 1978, but when Cetera and Seraphine left in 1985, then it really became a cover band. I'm glad that they've been able to keep touring and keep their music alive, but I never liked Jason Scheff and all of his swooping and crying vocals, plus his over-embellishment when singing background vocals. He sang background vocals as if they were lead vocals (which is very bad), PLUS, he even sang the background vocals INCORRECTLY at the chorus in "Make Me Smile." None of the drummers since Danny Seraphine have come close to capturing the energy, excitement, and pyrotechnics of Danny's drumming. Their playing is much too deliberate and clunky, which is probably what the rest of the band needed as they got older, because with age, people aren't as sharp mentally and physically so they need the beat to be extra heavy and clunky in order for them to be able to follow it. But the extra clunky-ness in the drumming definitely detracts from their music, it's unfortunate. The guys said that with Danny, they "didn't know where '1' is" anymore." Well Jesus Christ, if you have to be bludgeoned over the head with every beat in order to know where 1 is, then that's your fault for being too old and having dulled senses, it's not the drummer's fault. Those guys took far too many drugs in the 70s and it dulled their senses. That's the problem, NOT Danny.
100%. Lee played like shit on most concerts I've listened to on RU-vid (over 75).. Danny would say, "The other guys wouldn't know where the 2, 3, and 4 were", and they probably wanted a stiff so their drunk ass would have a 1st grade music job.
@@LoyalOpposition I don't agree about Lee. Lee is still a very solid player despite his age. He discovered the Claude Gordon approach maybe 10 or 15 years ago and studied with Jeff Purtle to master it and his playing, particularly his endurance, got better. For a guy his age, he plays incredibly well. Parazaider always stunk. Pankow is a great trombone player. What really started to suffer with this band after Cetera left is the vocals. Scheff's singing stunk, with all of his swooping, crying, and melodramatic shifts from chest tone to falsetto and poor phrasing. Neither Scheff nor Champlain knew how to sing background vocals. First of all, on Make Me Smile, Scheff sang wrong notes on the harmonies and both Scheff and Champlin sang background parts as if they were singing lead, with over-embellishments. When you sing background, you're supposed to sing it straight. All of the background vocal parts are supposed to sound like one voice, or one instrument playing a chord. But these guys were all over the place, adding notes and embellishments as if they were singing solos. It's surprising that these guys didn't know this and also surprising that they didn't have the musical sensibilities to even figure it out without someone having to point it out to them.
Nikki black If I’m correct I don’t think Peter Cetera wants anything to do with the group Chicago anymore meaning even talking about them. I don’t know why. As far as Robert Lamm goes, I’m not 100% sure on this but I think he still stays in touch with Peter Cetera. I don’t know if I saw it somewhere on a interview on RU-vid but I hope that helps
@@dartsport1974 the only thing Chicago-related Peter Cetera has done was "The Terry Kath Experience" which I thought was really cool of him. He never talks about Terry, so this was a nice opportunity.
He says there is no leader, yet him and Pankow think they are the faces of Chicago. Always the most pointless members that ride the band name to the bitter end to make $$$$. Even though Cetera, Scheff, & Champlin made these hacks all their fame and money with their actual talent.
@@GEORGEWINS1956 Robert Lamms last radio hit was ANOTHER RAINY DAY NEW YORK CITY which got completely ignored off the radio waves, the minute "IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW " got played. I still remember that.
They ARE the faces of Chicago. And thank God for that because they still tour and play their amazing songs. Most of which Lamm wrote and still sings as if he has not aged one bit. So happy they are keeping Chicago alive!
