In this video, I show highlights from our late March 2018 visit to the Red Rock Canyon State Park in California. The park is located on the southeast edge of the Sierra Nevada Range, and a fantastic landscape awaits visitors.
Sandstone deposited millions of years ago is tilted up at an angle exposing all colorful layers. Over time the wind and rain have weathered the rock into a vast variety of shapes.
I show you the scenic Ricardo campground area then take you along on a hike of Hagen Canyon. An easy nature trail through this fascinating landscape.
The video ends with a high up view of highway 14 cutting through the heart of the park and a slideshow of still photos I took.

The dump has been closed for at least 10 years. I have been camping there for at least that long and have never dumped there, ever. From what I understand the dump was simply a septic tank and the leaching field collapsed because it was in a very sandy layer. As such it was not large enough to handle the amount of RVs dumping there. Every time I've been there they tell me the same story, that it is going to get fixed soon. I really wish it would because we stay at several places in the Dove Springs OHV area just north and it would be a great place to stop and dump on the way home. Oh well. Great review of this beautiful campground there Ray. Hope you enjoy your trip north this spring. I look forward to the next one. Pat

You need to check out a couple of nearby local features: the opal mine (you can dig your own opals) and Burro Schmidt’s tunnel, a nearly mile long tunnel thru solid rock, hand dig over several years by this colorful character. The roads are rough gravel but completely passable.

We pass Red Rock a few times every year on our way to the eastern Sierras. It is a first year geology major introduction class that I was in over 30 years ago (myself and one other woman with about 20 men) and then again in a field mapping class a few semesters later. Surprising that you didn't encounter a few University field study campers there this time of year. It's as beautiful as it is interesting!

Forgot to mention many other attractions nearby. There's Robber's Roost, just north on 14, where bandits maintained a watch for the sheriffs posse back in the mid 1800s, which is now a bird sanctuary. Easy to spot, it's the core of an ancient volcano. There's also Lava Falls (?) which is near the cinder cone about an hour's drive north. There's an old Indian trail on the lava flow cliffs just past Ridgecrest (see if you can spot it where the high tension wires cross the road).

It looks very much like the pinnacles area near Strawberry Reservoir between Salt Lake and Vernal. It's really beautiful.

Is this a first come first served campground? If you reserved, how far out did you make the reservation. Every Campground in the SW seems to be full this time of year even boondocking sites.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 6 лет назад
Its first come first serve. We arrived on a Wednesday and had lots of sites to choose from by it filled up pretty good on the weekend. There are BLM sites to the south and north with lots of sites but they were ATV hotspots so a bit noisy. Cheers, Ray

Ray have you ever camped in the undeveloped portion of California City? There are Miles and miles of city streets cut into the desert east of California City that never got developed. Its kind of neat to pick a random Street and go find it and camp there for a night!
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 6 лет назад
I've heard about but figured it was all ATV, 4 wheelers, and dirt bike crowds that went there to race around. :)

Terrific video Ray! Looks like such a beautiful place. You mentioned that it got up to 86 degrees during the day but I was wondering about the night and early morning temperatures. I noticed Anne was wearing a jacket on your morning walk. Also, have you ever done a review on the video equipment you use for your vlog?

It was down into the high 40s at night so chilly the morning until the sun came up. Here are a post and video I did a few years ago. Cameras are getting a little long in the tooth so will be upgrading soon - www.loveyourrv.com/love-your-rv-photo-and-video-creation-tools/ I like the Sony's they have stood up well to my abuse. :)

45 years ago when I was a young man we would ride dirt bikes all around there, can’t any more too much scarring of the earth. I had friends living in Bishop and would travel there a couple times a month. The Alabama Hills was party central for the local kids had some great times. Don’t miss Mono Lake. I was there camping out of my 65 Rambler when they were shooting Clint Eastwood’s High Plains Drifter. Lots of cool places on that side of The Sierras.

When they say the max length of RV allowed in the park is 30 feet then I guess that is just the travel trailer? I think your travel trailer and tow vehicle together would be longer than 30 feet.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 6 лет назад
The website says: Max. Trailer LengthsTrailer: 30 Feet Camper/Motorhome: 30 Feet We are 45 feet hooked up. I think they state that because the majority of the sites are double wide to park the truck but not that long. However there are 4 -5 pull thrus, we had one and the truck and trailer fit un-hooked so it must have been about 50 feet or more. The big problem is the level is not good at most sites.

One of our favorite "within a few hours desert campgrounds" from Ventura! Funny thing ~ we were in that EXACT same spot at the beginning of March! Nicely done & great to see your pup on a hike ~ here is my most recent vid on RRCSP ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6PbKWRXdcyQ.html (have a prior one too). You can camp just up the road at Dove Springs for free.

Yes, took a drive up there. Was easter weekend was pretty packed with ATV's and dirt bikes looked like a dusty, noisy place but a few campsites had sweet views, would like to try it when it's less busy. We also took a drive down the Jawbone Valley, looked like some neat spots in there.
@Hughster49
@Hughster49 6 лет назад
You're right, I'm sure it was a busy weekend. Also, if you or your wife can get a handicap plate, you can get a lifetime Federal and state of California card that makes all of these parks half price.

$25 is a bit steep when you can boon dock a few miles down the road on BLM for $0 and just pay the day use $6. I've stayed at much better campgrounds for free or around $10 dollars.

I don't mind supporting the state parks sometimes and it's a pretty location. I checked out the BLM areas nearby they were pretty packed up with campers, lots of ATVs and dune buggies running around when we were there. Cheers, Ray
