Remember me and my mate taking his Morris 1300 out as far as Devils Gate. Dude in a 4wd was amazed when he seen us there. Didn't actually have any issues.

I’m showing my age here, back in ‘72 my grandparents who lived in Lyall Bay took my for a trip around to Red Rocks. We drove as far as we could in his Hillman Hunter and walked for a while, we stopped at a hut for a picnic lunch. Had a great day there. Brings back great memories. Cheers guys!

This place is like my home

7:23 there is a Bren Gun Carrier (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Carrier) rotting away about 20m toward the sea from the stuck vehicle. In the 70's it was stolen from Owhiro Bay and they got to here before it threw a track. Too far gone and too heavy for recovery back then I guess. In the 80's you had to be careful riding trail bikes across the rises as it could be just below the surface, other days it was easily visible (just the lower chassis and wheel hubs etc. The Suzuki 410's used to float across here so we could take a lower line.. The trick was to hit it fastish, and feather the throttle down as it lost traction... anything less than 30k was sure to get stuck.. but the suzi's could just reverse, fill their own pothole, and continue on. The biggest mistake most make on this (and the beach after Karori Stream) is to try head up the beach when they get stuck... the best method was to travel to the middle of the bay where the beach is flattest, then get up as high as possible before turning back. We used to watch Yuppies in their new Niva or surf.. get to where they were almost stopped.. then hit the throttle and bury all 4 wheels... We'd rock up in the suzi. dig it in the same... ask if they needed any help "NO, WERE FINE".. back and fill the suzi and roll away to high ground until their ego wore out, come back and help them out.

I took my 4wd Hiace around there about 10 years ago. I’ve got photos of it going through Devils Gate.

I was lucky first time went around there stock 1996 prado 33 psi in the tyres at 4 am in the morning 😂made it though

Nice vid. Done it 12 years ago in a stock 94 bighorn. Remember pulling two prado rentals from the soft sand with some clueless asian tourists. I don't like drones but great footage nonetheless.

I used to drive around here in my younger years. I imagine devils gate has changes abit. Do you think a stock navara np300 would have clearance to get over ?

I just moved to Wellington and want to have a look here. I have a Freelander 2, do I need a live axle and real low-range? Or will land rover's terrain assist and 210mm ground clearance/500mm wade depth get me through? Any recommendations for other spots in the area? Ideally semi-remote spots for a quiet fish
