I'm disappointed to hear that you guys don't like the Spotlight and product review formats....I personally think they're awesome and informative! I appreciate getting a chance to see these products in action...especially considering what some of these items cost, I'd rather see a review before I spend my hard earned! Keep up the awesome work!!!

This was one of my favorite product reviews ever! Somehow it took you took 30 minutes to review a plastic tube concoction with an electric motor and yet you managed to find something interesting to say about every piece! Keep up this format, it's great.

@Bulkreefsupply: I appreciate the product reviews. I have to be honest, all the live videos have made me kinda zone out lately. I miss the old BRS videos that were around 10 minutes long, straight to the point, and were full of facts. Thanks for all you do guys, just wanted to offer some feedback. Thanks guys

I think both the spotlights and these new “reefer reviews” have their place. I really appreciate the spotlights when I’m browsing for something and debating whether or not it’s going to be useful/have the features that I’m looking for. Short and to the point is perfect then. However, with bigger, more permanent pieces of equipment, especially ones with a huge variety of options (skimmer is actually the perfect example), I’m more than likely going to search for longer, in depth reviews. Spotlights would still work, especially as a summary but a long real review that talks about all the features is perfect. Keep up the good work!

I am itching to replace my Bubbleking Supermarin 250 for this just because of the extra stuff it comes with and the built in window in the skimmate collection cup . Why , its because my Bubbleking Supermarin 250 has been running great for so long that I am anticipating the skimmer pump to fail and the replacement pump might cost more than this new Red Sea skimmer . My Red Dragon 8 2m3 return pump failed me after just 2 years of use and has been replaced by the Eheim Universal 1262 pump . Could not get the distro to repaired it back then , had to absorbed the failure from my own pocket . To the team at Red Sea , thank you for producing such innovating products ! You showed to the whole reefing community that there are still area of improvement for a protein skimmer . I really liked the concept of set it and forget it for this new protein skimmer due to the fact that you added a skimmer cup neck cleaner in as well as a longer hose to empty the skimmate cup and also added a valve to the mix . That you created a window to see the level of skimmer bubble in the skimmer cup was ingenious ! Thanks also to the team at BRS ! You guys have been helping the reefing community for so long now . I really appreciate what you guys are doing , keep it up ! Thank you ! On another note , my birthday is a few days away so . . . . . . . . . .

The middle model has the legendary Sicci Psk1000. That pump has been on more skimmers than you could ever believe over the last 10+ years. I had issues in the early years with them as they matured with a lot of models of their pumps. The impeller coating was inferior and the impellers would swell up and bind from saltwater getting in. That seems to be over many years ago and personally would have no reservations with them today. The drainage is great because the bubbles back into the tank would be near none with that design. Back in the 80's RedSea had some of most serious designs in marine aquarium skimmers. Always surprised at the overflow hose for cup draining as my sump has always been too tall to use the thing? But a lot of companies do that so my sump although a major brand maybe is odd.... *** One thing I noticed was it skims so much better without the squeegee installed. You lose the laminar flow that is needed and the smooth now friction is gone. That squeegee has so much sharp edges it traps organics on it instead of the smooth transition you want into the cup. Even my ORP meter showed the immediate effects when I removed it. ******* I replaced the gasket it was so insanely unruly to lift off. It almost seemed like the new one was loose so easy to remove now but Nothing leaks at all....😁

I have had the RSK-600 skimmer for over 2 months. The neck cleaner is very convenient and effective (not the easiest to turn in tight spaces). I have only removed the neck x2 to clean. I just empty the cup through the valved hose. I will say, it is louder than my skimz d/c skimmer and my Vertex Omega skimmer I have had in the past. It does perform very well though!

Those clips holding the pump will break and that opening mechanism will gradually get clogged up by stuff requiring more frequent cleaning or readjustment. Going plastic makes a huge difference in cost, let's hope they do not charge the same as acrylic.

I liked the new style. Felt less like an ad for the brand and a bit more like meeting local reefers and hearing their thoughts. Maybe a hybrid of Spotlights and this could be a good compromise: First bit of the video is quick facts more spotlight style then the remainder is less scripted and see it in action and thoughts. I’d rather have this as anyone can go to the brands website to get the facts.

I can't say this is a product I'd want to spend $300-$500 on. While I get the excitement about the nuanced little additions it just looks like more things that can break and need to replace. I'd rather have to unscrew my skimmer pump than hope those little plastic clips don't break when I'm cleaning it up. Same with that gear assembly adjustment, I'm afraid of how easily it could break if I'm trying to dial in an adjustment and unbeknownst to me there's some calcium carbonate deposits that have built up in the teeth and I end up snapping something off. What happens then? Does Red Sea stock and sell replacement parts? How much do those parts cost? I agree about your original statement that a skimmer is a tube with a pump. So to me I don't want to pay the same money for lower quality and more fragile materials just because of a couple new bells and whistles. I want something that has as few failure points as possible and uses robust materials that I can easily fix or replace.

Is injection-molded plastic an advantage? Won't it crack?
@KrzysztofC-1
@KrzysztofC-1 5 лет назад
I think it's cutting costs to the extreme and it will brittle and crack. Same as plastic parts on modern cars. I guess they calculated this to hold through warranty and not much more.
@87VNP
@87VNP 2 года назад
I'm a design engineer and can share my experience. If designed well, both injection molded and machined acrylic can be equally durable. The benefits of injection is that we can use tougher materials like polycarbonate and the design can be full of features. Most machined skimmers use acrylic which is not as tough or strong as polycarbonate. To compensate for the weakness, thicker acrylic is used, hence why acrylic skimmers look so beefy. Also acrylic is easy to weld together. Injection design allows the correct placement of thicker areas only where needed. Machined acrylic is stock sizing, and any additional machining to make thinner adds labor and cost. Additional features also adds labor and cost. Injection can make the skimmer lighter by design, and saves material cost where unnecessary thickness is unnecessary. Polycarbonate is used in PPE, think safely glasses and safety shields. So what's the benefits of machined acrylic? It has a lower initial startup cost for manufacturing, making rev changes easy and less costly. The startup cost for injection molding is much higher and makes rev changes very costly. Machined acrylic is very feasible for a smaller company with less capital to manufacture. As a an engineer, we have to meet the requirements of the buyer such as cost and design features. The buyer in this case being the brands themselves. Some features are only possible with injection molding. And meeting capital restrictions are only possible with machining acrylic. The worst thing for a company (brand) to do is to have a poor design. Neither injection molded or machine acrylic will be durable and successful long term if not designed well.

Guys, I love your videos and am a long term subscriber so please take what I am about to say in a constructive form. On a scale on 1 to 10 I would rate this video a 3. The greatness of your spotlight videos is that they are 100% unbiased and use actual measurable tests that produce results which allow each one of us to make their buying decisions in an informed manner. The problem here is that this is not a product review. It is a first impressions at best, and kind of sounds more like a marketing pitch rather than a review. Perhaps a First Impressions video, though making a buying recommendation or giving it a rating at first sight does make it sound like marketing... Here is why I think that: 1- A skimmer review needs to last at least a couple of months in a real tank. An experienced reefer opinion on the skimmer after these two or three months is valuable. 2- additionally you need to find a couple of measurable and repeatable parameters that are actually interesting to the end user. These should be performed at the end of the 2-3 months usage to ensure every skimmer is well broken in. To me these parameters should be: 1) measurable noise levels, 2) how long each would take to remove 500ml of skimmate from a 20 gallon container under normal operation (not overflowing!): 3) visible micro bubbles on that last test taking a short video clip that could than be compared across skimmers under review. 4) ease of maintenance. This one is hard to measure but we would trust your judgement after the 2-3 month usage period 😊. This could build a database for the skimmers you would review which buyers could check to make an informed buying decision according to their needs. This is why your lighting spotlights are so amazing. Finally, there are several "reviews" of owners of the larger 600 and 900 models (reef2reef has a couple of threads) that are returning their skimmers because even with the cabinet doors closed the noise is so high that they just can't stand it. The 300 is smaller and draws less air so likely why in your case you did not find it loud. It given the rep they are having it is important to show and compare actual noise levels with other popular skimmers that would help us separate myth from reality.

I have the RSK-600 and couldn't be happier! Been running it about a month now and this thing has already caused my nitrates to drop. The manual neck cleaner works beautiful but like Ryan said the squeegee blades will accumulate skimate gunk after so many uses but I haven't had a problem with any of it falling back into the skimmer body. The recessed area for viewing the neck was a fantastic idea, makes adjusting the water height a breeze!

I find it weird that for them there is 0 noise. I ordered an rsk300 after my bubble magnus c6 died and its been in the sump for 5 days now and already thinking of returning it. First off de air intake is like an jet engine loud and annoying placing tubing on it reduces the noise alot but then again, i should not DIY an new skimmer like that. Second the hum on the pump is unbearable put out an tickets to redsea maybe i got an mondat morning model but boy if the air intake is an jet engine the pump is the afterburner vibrates the whole sump tried diffrent heights to see if it gets silent when i lift the skimmer. Bit dissapointed because the bubble magnus was dead quit with them both being AC pumps i expected more from the rsk300 but dissapointed so far

This skimmer looks flimsy, i can see those clips that hold the pump breaking easily, and the air adjuster looks like it could be hit and miss, doesnt look like a solid build??

Odd...my friends skimmer sounds like a cargo jet on takeoff kinda like the reef octopus 202s before they redesigned the venturi and silencer.

Please do the same type of video for the Nyos skimmers. No real in depth hands on review videos out there.

Do know if BRS gets any kickbacks from Red Sea. I know Red Sea been in the game for years. But I think at times BRS act like fluffers with Red Sea products. Even these new products that are new for even Red Sea.

Fellow viewers, don't be mean when these guys try something new. That said, one of these guys is a lot shorter than the other. 😃

To me all a neck cleaner does is drop the crap you’ve skimmed out to drop back into the skimmer - gadget for the lazy in my opinion 🤣

Thumbs up on the use of sicce but using cheap plastic and charging a premium price as if it was made of a more expensive material like acrylic is wrong.
