Learn the CALLS and SOUNDS of a Red-shouldered Hawk! These beautiful raptors are very vocal every spring. They are so loud that most people hear them before seeing them.

Red-shouldered Hawks (Buteo lineatus) are fairly easy to identify by sound. Listen for a LOUD “kee-ahh,” with the second note descending in pitch.
The “kee-aah” call is often repeated. It is very loud and can be heard from many miles away.
Red-shouldered Hawks are most often heard between April and June during the breeding season. They use their calls to attract females and defend territory.
These raptors are common in the eastern half of North America. Interestingly, there is also a population that lives on the west coast.
Distinctly marked, Red-shouldered Hawks have a barred rufous chest, mostly white underwings, a strongly banded tail, and of course, red shoulders that are visible when perched.
Red-shouldered Hawks are primarily forest dwellers. These raptors are common in suburban areas where houses have been mixed into woodlands.
Length: 15-19 inches / 38-48 cm
Weight: 1.1-1.9 lbs. / 500-860 gm
Wingspan: 38-42 inches / 96-107 cm

Keep in mind that bluejays are master impersonators of raptors. I constantly hear them mimic red shouldered hawks, Cooper's Hawks, and recently I've heard them as Mississippi Kites! If you hear a red shouldered hawk call coming from a tree and don't see a large bird, chances are it's a bluejay!

This comment omg! I really thought I was the only one hearing bluejays mimicking red shouldered hawks like I thought this only happened in my backyard wow why do they do this? I haven't heard them mimicking any other birds of prey but that's really interesting

Thank you for this comment! We heard the loud call and used a bird ID app from inside and it said red tailed hawk, but upon excitedly looking outside I couldn’t see any. However there was a blue jay digging in one of my raised bed gardens right outside the window. Interesting!

I live in Tennessee, in the foothills near the edge of the Cherokee National Forest. I hear these quite frequently, but I’ve never seen one until today! It was in a field at the edge of the woods, bent down drinking from a small marshy stream in the grass. It was beautiful, and definitely the highlight of my day!

I just watched two males fighting on the hillside behind my house. This helped me identify them because of their high pitched cries. I live in a coastal town within Los Angeles, CA. We have several types of hawks but these were smaller than what I typically see so I wasn’t entirely sure. Thanks for the video!

Strafford, New Hampshire. NH is almost entirely woods and water. We live near Bow Lake, and I work from home. Nearly every morning, around the same time, I hear the red-shouldered hawk's cry as it patrols the woods we live in. Love it! In the evening it's the barred owl pair calling to each other while they hunt across the hill.

We are lucky enough to have a pair of red shouldered hawks nesting nearby. We have been watching them for months. One day , one of the hawks sat on a low tree limb to watch us. We were in a covered lean-to back porch. My daughter and I were able to take several pictures through the plexiglass . It was amazing to see this hawk so low and so close to us.

We live just south of Tampa, Florida, less than 5 miles from the Alafia River and Tampa Bay. We're in the middle of 6+ acres of woodlands with many mature oak trees and a variety of others, including pines and palms. We hear these beauties literally daily, especially this time of year, and see them often in our backyard, occasionally with fresh prey in their clutches. They are almost as common as the Spanish moss ithat hangs off the oak trees. They are truly magnificent creatures, and we love that they have chosen to seek refuge here from all the (what we consider to be) overdevelopment of land. We would love to purchase surrounding properties and make it a nature preserve that could never be cleared to build another strip mall, apartment building, etc. These guys and many other wonderful species are running out of places to live, and that makes us both sad and angry.

I just had a Red-Shouldered Hawk in my backyard in Houston, Texas. I am near Bear Creek Park in the Addicks Reservoir. It was the call that caught my attention from inside my home. It was absolutely beautiful, and I feel honored to have watched it closely through binoculars as it was perched so strong and majestic calling from atop a telephone pole. What a perfect place to make its call!

I live in Louisville, KY and am visited by one and possibly two red shouldered hawks about 3 to 4 times a week soaring over my backyard and through the subdivision. We live near forested area named the parklands of Louisville that also has a large creek named Floyds Fork running right through it. I have a one year old and 10 week old pug puppies that I let out in the morning in my backyard around 7:00 to 8:00 am when I usually see the hawks. So I walk with them to protect them as my smallest puppy is only 7 pounds. One morning as I was walking with the puppies the hawk actually flew about 30 feet right over my head. I always go out into the yard when I let them out. I only see the hawks in the morning but occasionally hear calls in the afternoon. So it must be nesting somewhere near by. We have so many trees and houses that I only get about 3 to 4 seconds of seeing them before there gone. Love seeing them soaring overhead!

I live in Northern Kentucky, approximately 15 miles south of Cincinnati Ohio. I have had a hawk hanging around here for a few years now, but have never been able to see it close enough or hear it’s call to be able to identify the type of hawk. After watching and listening to this- AND the fact it flew out of my very large magnolia tree in my backyard yesterday, I can definitively say it was a red-shouldered hawk. It was truly magnificent to see and finally be able to properly identify it!!

I live in south central Texas ... about an hour south of Austin. We have a few red tailed hawks around here but a couple of days ago, I heard this almost consist call of a hawk I hadn't heard before. The calls were similar to those of a blue jay but a bit less raucous. I kept searching for the source of this and finally saw a small hawk circling around the backyard. He finally landed on our back fence. A large tree shaded where he was and it was hard to make out any markings on him. He just looked like a brown shape ... a bit larger than a mourning dove. It took me a while, but your video helped me identify him as a red shoulder hawk by his call. Lately development has been tearing up what once were ranches around here and likely disturbing the territory of these amazing birds. This has meant more squirrels in my backyard along with more mourning doves ... likely a tasty meal for any hawk.

I have had a nest in my neighbor’s tree for the last few years. The sound you feature here is what I was looking for! All this time I thought they were Coopers. One thing I might add is while they are near certain nests a very brave bird much smaller than them (gray on top, white belly, long gray tail feathers) will dive bomb them over and over. When this happens they make a quick, deep full-throated grunt like “Aughk!”. It is quite a thing to witness, like a cat chasing off an 8ft alligator.

I saw and heard one while kayaking doing loon surveying on Lac La Pêche in Québec, Canada. It was on August 9th, 2023. I saw it relatively well with my binoculars, but it's the call that confirmed I was looking at a red-shouldered hawk. I saw and heard it while kayaking through an open and shallow swamp like area of the lake.

I just heard one a few minutes ago. I’m in Lake Norman, NC, but as a volunteer for Carolina Raptor Center, I hear them quite a bit. Often though, I’ll hear one in the summer, and I’ll seek it out and find I’ve been fooled by a Blue Jay. It’s amazing how close they get to the sound. I mean, I work with them a lot, and I can’t tell the difference. We have tons of Red Shoulders around here, second only to the ubiquitous Red Tailed Hawk.

Thanks for this video! 😃 It confirms that the hawk I’m watching/hearing is a red-shouldered hawk! I’m in Brunswick, Georgia. 😁

So glad I found this video. We've had the same one doing this around our house here in Gatlinburg Tennessee for over a year now. I always thought it was a red tailed but now I know. Thanks

I just heard the chickadees freaking out outside my window, and then this keeaaah sound repeating nearby. I used an app to identify the sound, and it was a red-shouldered hawk. I'm in the right area, so that's a reasonable assumption. Thanks for this video, it seems to confirm the presence of these hawks (about an hour north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

I picked up a call (per Merlin) in my backyard this morning on a barrier island in Brevard County Florida. I’ve seen them in the area fairly frequently but this is the first time I’ve heard one from my yard.

I hear them fairly often in Sacramento. This morning I even saw one lurking around in the grass pecking around for breakfast.

I frequently hear red shouldered hawks in the neighborhoods and parks in the East end of La Mesa, San Diego County, CA. In fact I am hearing one right now as I am sitting at a large park in La Mesa. I've also heard them at a park in nearby Spring Valley, CA.

I actually had one perch on my deck rail once, a juvenile. Now I see it in the branches in the woods sometimes!

I have one these that does that call when I hawk whistle at it. We have called back and fourth for half and hour before. She has got pretty close too and even flew like 15 ft right over my head. It always makes my day to talk to them . They are so beautiful

I’m in Westwood, MA and have been hearing and seeing the red-shouldered hawk for several days in the woods off of my balcony . I downloaded the Merlin ID app and was able to identify it by its call.
