Today I visit Paul Fowlie's Red squirrel hides in Yorkshire. Below is link to his web site.
paulfowliephotography.co.uk/r...
Paul has been running his Red squirrel hides for over seven years and it is one of the best places in the U.K. to photograph this species. They are numerous, approachable and gorgeous.
Paul has two hides. One with lots or suitable perches for the squirrels and another reflection pool hide. In addition there is the opportunity to get jumping shots of the squirrels.
I picked a bad weather day. It could hardly have been worse. Rain and fog made it hard to get decent shutter speeds. I shall have to go back. Perhaps in the spring on a brigter day.

Cheeky squirrel. My dad had a steel cable strung between two trees, with a corn cob hanging in the middle by a chain. He loved watching them walk across the cable, pull up the chain, eat the corn, drop it, then walk back. So clever. Wish I had a video of that.

The G9II squirrel footage @ 120fps slowed down 5x looks great. I'm sure I remember still seeing some red squirrels among the grey ones in the London parks as a kid in the late 1960s. We were told then their numbers were declining due to their invasive grey cousins. However, online sources today say they were already long gone from London by then. Anyone else still remember them in London in the 1960s?

Nice, the Lumix G9II photos look all much more colorful than from the OM-1. I like the Lumix G9II photos/videos much more. Any ideas?

Another great video. I saw and photographed red squirrels for the first time in the Yorkshire Dales at Snaizeholme. Wonderful. I didn't video them and my photos are nothing like as good as yours, but it was a wonderful few hours. The only disappointment was people ignoring the "Please don't feed the squirrels" signs clearly visible. Best to go when there is nobody else around if you can.

Video looks better in low light in comparison to stills due to the dynamic noise. Also the shutter speed required for video is much lower, as motion blur is an appealing characteristic, which is far more forgiving than in stills where we look to freeze motion.

The Red Squirrel should be the national animal of England. Currently it's the Lion, seems outdated to me? Yet, the humble Red Squirrel is a symbol of resilience, overcoming the aggressive attacks invading its natural surroundings, but somehow slowly making a comeback. #RedSquirrelForUK

Great film Mike and many good images despite the weather! Would love to try a panning shot on the jumping squirrels with a nice blurred background, should be possible as one can pre focus on the distance as the take off point and landing are pretty much the same from jump to jump! Hope 2024 is a fantastic year for you! Cheers Tony.

When I photographing birds with the OM1 and a squirrel pop up they all seems to be pin sharp on the eyes. Maybee the programmers on OM-systems implemented the squirrels in the bird detection and not the animal-detection.? Or both maybee? Also like to share my shortcuts: Have pro-capture when I hit the ael button set up with 4000 of a sek. and 50 fps when I hit the AF button(same shutterspeed as in 20fps). And 20 fps in regular use. A great thing is that the camera remember I set down the shutterspeed to ca.2500/sek in pro-capture when I go back and forth until I shut the camera of. Lookin forward to your next one Mike! Always a treat discovering a new video from you!🙂

The bird/mammal eye detection works whatever the setting/subject, but I can see an improvement if I do it right.

it does look a good spot --- what lens length do you think is the best. I have only a slow 150 - 300mm lens and wondering if i should hire a longer lens for a visit!
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS 7 месяцев назад
I used the 150-400 (MFT) all day. At the drinking pool I could have done with my 40-150mm. 150-300mm on a full chipped camera will be a bit short.
@WaddyMuters
@WaddyMuters 7 месяцев назад
I haven’t made an exhaustive test, but I don’t bother changing the OM 1 subject detection from bird to mammal, bird works for every animal I have encountered so far, deer, frogs, cats, squirrels all get detected very well.
@MikeLaneFRPS

It does work well however set, but sometimes I see it struggle and then remember to change it and see an improvement.

Do you develop OM-1 RAW stills through their proprietary software OM System Workspace? It is equipped with very good AI-based denoise. In defocused areas it beautifully smears the noise and in areas full of detials it gently but decisevely reduces it while preserving the details. This software can reduce noise from OM-1 RAWs to the level of usually processed stills from FF camera. But in other software you can AI-process FF files as well. And there is little doubt that M43 struggles in low light more than FF does. That is just physics. The bigger the lens, the better the results. I use multi camera setups for some of my projects so I had numerous cameras of different sizes (1 inch, m43, canon APS-C, Sony APS-C and FF) and I encounter many situations where m43 just fail to produce usefull image and FF still holds on.
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS 7 месяцев назад
I have used OM Workspace, but not routinely.

I wonder if the subject detection modes are just priority, so if you have a cat and a bird both in frame it knows what to detect. That would actually make sense, rather than forcing you to change modes for no real reason.
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS 6 месяцев назад
No the subject detection setting helps the Algorithms. I suppose it loads a different set. Not often you have a cat and bird in the frame together.
