One of the best games ever. Microprose really was knocking it out of the park with every release. First played this on my friend's C64, then later on on the Amiga. Nowadays I, like many, quench my appetite with Cold Waters.
When I got this game (Atari ST) I was brand new to subsimulations. My only active knowledge was basically Silent Service (1). I didn't have much if at all knowledge about modern warfare. The idea of controlling a torpedo after you fire it...shocking! Still, eventually I grasp most of it and boy did I have a lot of fun. One thing that did annoy me though, how the enemy ships "magically" could shoot down my missiles. Then I realized what was happening. :) Few years later I served in the navy as ASW aboard a frigate. Funny how life is. Great game and yes Cold Waters is very close to what this was. One thing I can say about the different versions, at least from memory, the ST version had complete mouse control which was very helpful. I remember not only being able to accurately point with the cursor on the map, but IIRC also able to control the wired torpedoes with the left and right mouse buttons. What a game! Thanks for the video.
Mouse control would be invaluable in this PC version, controlling several torpedoes simultaneously with the keyboard is very cumbersome, even worse if you have to maneuver and dodge threats... Cold Waters is undoubtedly an extraordinary heir.
I know, I know, McCafferty deserved to be here, but Mancuso was more on hand 😅 The USS Chicago will "return" in 1992, with another skipper at the helm, perhaps the most experienced in service 😉
Something I liked to do when I was in stealth mode would be to launch a torpedo at a 45 degree angle to the target, then turn it into the target's path when it was far enough away that they couldn't just fire a torpedo down the path of my torpedo to find me ;-)
When you put the name Bart up there I almost thought you meant Bart Fatima from Xenogears for some reason since he was captain of the Yggdrasil Sand Submarine LOL :)
superb project! i just love those simple graphics and animation, you started on ultimate difficulty this game! and you already get silver star, it will be great career! you can use all option which i never used before, very nice, this is very educational and amazing entertainment for me! Christmas is earlier this year :D:D:D thank you very much! :D:D:D
This game deserved an Ultimate difficulty campaign for RU-vid hehe. It is being a great pleasure to play this jewel, and the "retroactive training" with Cold Waters was very helpful. It's a very well done game, challenging but not frustrating and devoid of bugs, a great recommendation, thank you very much! Bart Mancuso will have a lot of work in the 80s, but in the 90s perhaps we'll see new skippers 😃
To me these "simple graphics and animation" offer (offered back then and still offers now) much better "game immersion" (I think it's the correct term) than these moder super-hyper-extra effects. Some of it, perhaps, is simply because I was a kid back then and most people tend to gloss over their childchood memories, but I think that the main reason was that limitations of graphics back then simply FORCES the imagination to work and "fill the gaps", whereas advanced technology gives everything "handed on a plate" and makes games "fall in through one eye and fall out through the other".
@@eswube Absolutely agree. It is hard to believe today that games of +30 years can offer such levels of immersion, complexity and entertainment, with nothing to envy to the current ones... without needing a top-of-the-range NVIDIA and in the space of a floppy. RSR and Strike Fleet are probably the best examples, along with 688 Attack Sub and Megafortress. It's hard to get so much for so little.
Excellent! I loved this game back in the day, but never managed to effectively play it on ultimate level (probably it had something to do with lack of proper manual... ;) ).
Looks great, although MK48s seem totally immune to noisemakers whereas Soviet torpedoes seem too easily decoyed. MK48s aren't *that* good. This game must be runnable in a VM Emulator on Windows!
MK48s are not immune to noisemakers, in this encounter I had the chance to activate them at the exact moment. In future missions I will have to steer active torpedoes over and over again.
