Devonreviewer had the best coverage of the Dr Martens vs Vintage Docs vs MIE vs Solovair, it was because of him that I didnt purchase newer docs. Also love his straight and nice style of videos, feels like a friend.
If you cannot decide between 875 or 877, go for the 8-inch boot. I do not recommend changing the eyelets. Switch to a set of longer laces. If you ever had a pair of sock/slippers when you were five years old, this is what these boots feel like after they break in.
One small difference between the 875 and the 877 is the width of the tongue. The 875 has a narrower tongue which lies flat and gets an aesthetic pattern from the laces. The 877 has a much broader tongue which doesn't lay flat and has to be folded. Personally I don't like the broader tongue and found it to be a little uncomfortable.
8" boots are where it's at if you live a blue collar life in a rural county, except in the summer when I wear my 6" boots in the shop or woobies the rest of the day. If only they offered this in a plain toe like the Thorogood 4364 that I love so much I'd probably get a pair. I don't necessarily hate moc toe boots and the 877 is an iconic classic boot, but I definitely prefer a plain toe. The lack of speed hooks is kind off annoying but I'm no stranger to that and can live with it.
These aren’t in their heritage line but are considered work boots so they come with a 30 day guarantee. I had mine installed with hooks on the top 4 eyes and it took about 2 week to get them back. Going a half size down with a medium thick insole made these boots a perfect fit. I had originally put in the thickest insole but after a couple weeks they still felt a little tight. My local redwing store swapped them out no questions asked. The customer service alone is worth the price
Thank you sir for the solid review of the 877. I’ve been looking into getting a pair of the 877 or the 10877 and you did a great job being informative and helpful. 😎
I happened to be in Red Wing, Minnesota this weekend, during the Redwing boot annual clearance sale from the factory. Yesterday I picked up a Pair of 877’s and a pair of Iron Rangers for $299. They’re factory seconds, but you can’t tell.
If you want a deal, get the work version of this boot, 10877 or 10875. They are 20 bucks CHEAPER, they don’t scratch up as easily, they have gunmetal eyelets, and they have that beautiful Red Wing logo stamp on the side.
I accidentally bought the 10875 a while back instead of the 875 (it was mislabeled on eBay) and I gave them away, I should have done a comparison video
I’ve been wearing my 10877’s for 16 hours a day for the past three year. On my second set of soles. You’ll know how good these boots are when you have to where another boot for a week while getting new soles. Best work boot ever
These boots are some of my favs. I just resoled with a new red midsole by Vibram and changed the white christy sole to a black christy sole… just because.
I can't believe i can't go back in time and get a pair of Billy Boots, the 8in with the black on that crepe sole look so goddamn good especially with the sheathe
While I don't really agree with some of your points in your other videos, I have to admit. I do agree with you on the "feels protected" part in this video. This is the reason why I choose leather boots and hi-cut sneakers. Although my feet don't feel as flexible compared to wearing low cut shoes, my feet feel more comfortable and protected while wearing the former. Cheers
I have a pair of 8” Thorogood moc steel toes. Those made me realize I just prefer 6” on my casual and work boots. There’s probably guys who need the protection/stability of 8” but it ain’t for me.
Great video! These are my 5th pair of Red wing boots and it has been the most pleasent break in too this date! I usually wear two thin wool liner socks for up to two weeks to avoid blisters but with the 877 they started feeling comfortable 5 days in. Great pair of boots and highly recommended.
Just got my first pair of redwings a couple of months ago. Think I bought the last pair in my size in Australia. Got for the 10877 (with the black eyelets) and love them. Just find it hard to get the tongue to lay neatly when I lace them up. Not sure if that’s normal or not but regardless they look cool as hell
You lightly dampen the inside of the tongue of the boot only. Don’t soak it just damp. Once you put them on push the tongue around your foot and lace up the boot. Wear it like that for a day or until it dries. This will form perfectly to your leg and the laces. It will stay like that forever ♾ You won’t regret it.
I used to do a lot of welding and have always stayed away from these because of that. The toe is like a spark and molten metal trap. If a blob of steel hits that toe, it will stay there and burn through. That said, I have a pair of these now and like them a lot. The sole is very flat and if you are used to a raised heel, it takes some getting used to. I find them to be very stable with your foot being so close to the ground compared to heeled boots. I like the way the leather molds to you when they are cinched up. I would not want to do a lot of walking on hard surfaces without thick bottom socks though.
Yes, they had an absolutely devastating cyberattack in 2020, plus everyone in the leather game is struggling with supply chain issues from the pandemic. It's hard to do boots in 2022
I have both 875 and 877 and they are definitely not the same boot at all... To be honest I'm even surprised that they are made on the same last. I wish Redwing would do a Black Klondike run off the 877 so I would complete my boot collection with happiness.
you just made me panic and run to the site to double check they're made on the same last - they are, thankfully! There's a kind of similar boot to what you described, the billy boot, in this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Sw_cBBNJuE.html
Thorogood gets it, and their speed hooks are solid machined brass. No they're not a premium quality heritage boot and they're not as nice as redwing ( you can have good without the extra expense of nice ) , but they're basically the gold standard traditional american made work boot today under $400. They have a good balance of quality and economy having made many wise decisions, and it just hits the nail on the head for a lot of people. Redwing is definitely nicer longer lasting and worth it, if you're looking for a heritage boot and not just a work boot.
@@jeffloucks2120 Yeah I know, but if a shank machined speed hooks and a harder wearing sole are what you want they've still got it. It's hard to deny these things that redwing doesn't get you in a similar boot. If redwing offered speed hooks and a thicker harder wearing sole like the max wear wedge, there'd probably be little reason to get a thorogood.
Great review and great channel! :) Question regarding the outsole, does it give decent grip? I've always assumed that wedge soles were for factory workers but you seemed to recommend them for outdoorsy purposes as well.
I have the 875 and the wedge sole is pretty middle of the road in terms of grip. the advantage comes from having your weight spread over a large flat area and the wedge is semi porous but I wouldn't be doing steep roof construction or anything like that in them
I learned some thing about the Oro Legacy leather. Thanks for a well done researched video. I love the fact that they are wholecut. I'm one of those lucky people who needs to go true to size unfortunately which is 11.5D. I have an 11D with very little wear, I need to get rid of it. Out of curiosity would you be interested in doing a comparison of conditioners? I would love to see the difference of Saphir 1925 Medaille D'or Oiled Leather Cream vs Smith's Leather Balm. I would happily donate my pair to you, if you are willing to do a comparison come conditioning time. Not sure that you want two 877's though? 😅 But everyone is different, found out the hard way. Amazing boot once broken in though! I have an 11.5D I'm in the midst of breaking and loving them!
planning a stop in Red Wing, MN in a few weeks.. Trying to decide what to pick up.. maybe there will be something limited I can pick up.. As always, thanks for the info
I had to go up halve a size from the Iron Rangers (8D to 8.5D) for the 877’s . I had a pair of Billy Boots in the same size as my IR’s but Billy Boot was a little bit to small on some days. I had to return a pair of 877’s because of a really thin and weak pull tag. I got a new pair under warranty and after a month or 2 I came to notice that the leather of the tongue on the left boot is much thinner and softer than the tongue on the right boot. Don’t know if it’s a bad thing but I find it a bit strange that those flaws slip through quality control.
Great video!! Love my 877 a bunch. Living in Japan I have the best time putting them on and taking them off everywhere. But they super compliment my jeans and its worth it.
Glad to hear people and there experience with size. It's hard to buy on the private market with how much these boots are worth and the unpredictability of the sizes. I'm a 9 Iron Ranger, so I would likely have to size up at least a half in the mocs? Thanks for your post.
I made that mistake of wearing these on a trip to Montreal a few years ago with no back up. Even with my 877s being about 3 years old, after 3 days I had to go buy a pair of sneakers.
I recently bought a pair of these boots, and they are by far THE best boot I’ve worn. I’m still in the break in phase, but I’d rather wear them versus my Timberland PRO Boondock 8” boots. Interesting to know about the sizing because I wear an 11.5 EE in my Danner Trail 2650 GTX Mids, and for my 877s I have a 9.5 EE. Which I guess makes sense in a weird way cause my Boondocks are 9.5 EE. Regardless of size, the 877s have been the best boot purchase I’ve ever made, and I can’t wait to still be using them 10+ years down the line. I work in footwear selling premium brands (such as Red Wing and specifically the 877 style, including others.), and this video was definitely good knowledge to learn! Keep up the great work, 100% subscribed. 👍🏻🤌🏻
Also something I learned from a client that came into our store: The best way to lace up your 877s, and I can verify this helps with giving you more flexibility at the ankle: Get the 72” Red Wing laces. Instead of lacing up to the top eyelets, leave two pairs of eyelets empty. Double overhand knot, and wrap the laces around your calf (should be just below the pull tab on the back of the boot), and make the wrap snug but not tight. Now put your foot at an incline so your calf kinda pushes against the laces, double overhand knot, and then normal butterfly knot. When you put your foot flat, your calf will relax against the laces giving you some wiggle room. And boom, suuuuper comfortable lacing style.
I bought a set of the 6" moc toes as my very first pair of adult boots and they have been brutal to break in. They feel just a bit more comfortable every time I wear them but damn have they been a challenge.
Red Wing came out with an easier to break in model lately with the Classic Chelsea and everyone got mad at them for straying from the rigid leather insoles they're known for. The guys can't win!
Your body heat does more to break-in the leather than anything else. You can accelerate the process a little by wiping the boots down with a very warn, damp cloth. I use an old wash cloth. The goal is to warm up the leather while your foot is in the boot. DO NOT use a hair dryer.
I wore mine to work. Ironworker. Took two months til they felt like slippers. These aren't really for hipsters. I mean they can get by but they cry about the pain and we just think it's funny. Lol
If the jeans/pants you're wearing don't fit around 877's you must actually be wearing leggings. I wear a fair amount of slim fitting pants and they look great with them. I also like a nice portion of the shaft to be showing. What's the point of wearing 8 inches if you're just going to cover them up right?
I’am weird but sometimes I prefer not having speed hooks because the laces keep falling out of the speed hooks when I’am trying to tie them especially if you tend to put your foot on your knee to tie them ( don’t judge me my back hurts when bending over sometimes 😂😉😀).
I don’t work construction but I’m on my feet all day (retail management), and these boots are second to none when it comes to all day comfort. I’m up and down stairs and ladders all day, so these are a go to for me for durability and comfort.
Construction isn’t the only job work boots are made for. What a shortsighted question. People in different fields outside of construction need them for the same reasons... Durability, quality, sturdiness, reputation etc. Lighter fashion boots would get destroyed if working in a kitchen or if you’re a florist etc. Of course we’re talking about these boots that aren’t heavy steel toe ones etc.
I don't remember any Red Wing sales ever now that I think of it, but that store does sometimes. Grown and Sewn is their new site www.grownandsewn.com/collections/red-wing-mens
I was told by the guy in my local store that they used to do a Black Friday sale, or maybe the Saturday after Thanksgiving sale. But he said the last few years they haven’t done them. Probably because of Covid, stimulus money, supply/demand, inflation, etc.
The 8-inch Legend. Sounds like the title of some porn flick. All kidding aside another spot on review Nick. Always look forward to your boot and jeans videos. 🙂BTW the boot you showed at the beginning was an 8.5 . Aren't you like an 11 or 12 ?
only 2 available. They're both todd snyder collab exclusives, that i've only seen on the second hand market. Model number 4314 and 4325. I hope you have big money laying around.
I have $59 Dickies Moc Toes. Best boots I've ever worn. going on 3 years, about 1400 hours on them. Good Year welted too. Save your money get the Dickies Moc's.
