Black Widow spiders are just like Redback spiders. I'm out to prove the Australian Redback spider is the most deadly and dangerous spider on the planet. Week 7 see's the first Redback spiderlings, more detail about them will be seen in the timelapse video. These small baby spiders quickly dispersed in the spider tank and I know many of them became an easy meal for the adult Redbacks in the spider tank. The spider egg sacks keep being laid and the large female Redbacks all have a zone they call home. My Redback spider infestation shows no sign of slowing, more dangerous spiders are found and collected. One large female redback loses her important rear leg in the collection process. I put this spider up against the brutal looking Devil Bug (Mole Cricket) in a one to one battle. Maybe from this bug fight we start to see how important the rear legs of the Redback spider are. Week 7 is a complex week of spider activity, this video will be split and joined to the Redback timelapse video that looks at the time between week 6 and week 7. Video posted as educational, documentary, and scientific and forms part of my Redback Spider study series of videos.
RU-vidr Beanmeister22 had the idea for this Terrarium. It's decorated with a CAT Bulldozer toy, Thomas The Tank (Wooden Railway), Minecraft Minifigure Steve with TNT and Star Wars Millennium Falcon (Hot Wheels Diecast). This Terrarium has garden soil and other garden bugs that were in the compost heap. It's a fun and inexpensive home for the most interesting and deadly pets I have ever had.

The Redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii) is a species of venomous spider indigenous to Australia. It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus Latrodectus, the widow spiders. The adult female is easily recognised by her spherical black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side of her abdomen and an hourglass-shaped red/orange streak on the underside. Females have a body length of about 10 millimetres (0.4 in), while the male is much smaller, being only 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 in) long. Mainly nocturnal, the female Redback lives in an untidy web in a warm sheltered location, commonly near or inside human residences. It preys on insects, spiders and small vertebrates that become ensnared in its web. It kills its prey by injecting a complex venom through its two fangs when it bites, before wrapping them in silk and sucking out the liquefied insides. Male spiders and spiderlings often live on the periphery of the female spiders' web and steal leftovers. Other species of spider and parasitoid wasps prey on this species. The Redback is one of few arachnids which usually display sexual cannibalism while mating. The sperm is then stored in the spermathecae, organs of the female reproductive tract, and can be used up to two years later to fertilise several clutches of eggs. Each clutch averages 250 eggs and is housed in a round white silken egg sac. The Redback spider has a widespread distribution in Australia, and inadvertent introductions have led to established colonies in New Zealand, Japan, and in greenhouses in Belgium.
The redback is one of the few spider species that can be seriously harmful to humans, and its preferred habitat has led it to being responsible for the large majority of serious spider bites in Australia.

I have created a Redback spider playlist because so many people can't stand my other videos. ru-vid.com/group/PLXzGdGVvDa-ID7q2UPTj69N_Twh0LU3vN If I still see people complaining about my other videos I can only assume they are spammers. Sadly these videos seem to attract lots of hate, racist and nonsense comments. I don't fully understand why.

leokimvideo hey ,most spiders hate the smell of mint . So plant some mint or get mint extract and spray your garden . It will discourage the spiders greatly same with cinnamon (and lemon juice ) so it may work with red backs . I'm speaking out of personal experience with brown recluses so t may work for red backs ^_^

When spiders die, they typically curl their legs under them. Spiders don't possess muscles like that of insects and other animals, but instead what some would describe as some weird hydraulic pressure system; fluid is forced to extremities. So when a spider dies, its limbs essentially lose pressure and all sort of wind back up. Spiders suffering from dehydration will have trouble moving for this reason and sit in a similar fashion. So once you pulled her leg off it's body began shrinking. Notice how "deflated" it's rear end appears.
@leokimvideo
@leokimvideo 7 лет назад
Great comment, I believe in the hydraulic system idea. When I pump a redback back end it makes all the legs go straight. I also highly suspect that injured redback was on her last legs well before she met the mole cricket. I will explain my idea here in part 2 of this video.

It's highly unlikely that a mole cricket would naturally face off with any spider; particularly a widow. And like you said they tend to eat vegetation and very small eggs/animal matter, probably the biggest animal they could eat would be a small worm or grub. The reason the mole cricket appeared to hurt/kill the spider is that it was flailing and mock digging so vigorously in trying to get away from the spider that it further damaged an already crippled spider (spiders are quite fragile to begin with). Praying mantis, wasps, birds, larger lizards and daddy-long-legs (the actual spider, not harvestmen) all kill/eat widows; and I bet some jumping spiders could, maybe some rodents. But there aren't many small creatures that are going to be able to single-handed kill a dense spider community like that. As soon as you drop anything in there it's at a huge disadvantage; because of all of the webbing and spiders. It's likely to be attacked before it gets its bearings or has time to set up any webs or strategies of its own. And also keep in mind that size/health is a factor; a big widow would probably kill a small wasp or mantis or lizard or long-legs, but a small widow probably wouldn't; and visa versa (larger wasp would likely kill a larger widow).

If you put that mole cricket in that tank, it will suit their sort of environment because the mole cricket is good at burrowing underground that's why it is a "mole cricket". So, because of the soil in the tank it will probably suit it

Hey Leo I have an idea. One time in my old house we had an eggsac hatch in our house and the issue was we found out too late and the spiders were all over. I made a solution with lavender and a solution with peppermint (I found the recipes on RU-vid) and I sprayed the corners and windows of my house. I sprayed my bed and all around the base line of my room. This does not kill spiders, but they hate the smell. My mistake was that I did this when they were already in my house. They became so annoyed with the smell that they started coming from their hiding places in broad daylight. This was a big problem because I'm terrified of spiders. It did keep more from coming in, but the ones that were already in were coming down from the ceiling or walking across the floor towards exits hiding in clothes. So my idea is maybe you should try spraying your wife's pots or a place where you see them a lot and set up a camera to see if it will get the spider to leave. Also note that I used more than one spray because I really wanted them to leave. I believe the mixture consisted of water, a little dish soap, and peppermint of lavender extract.. don't take my word for it, look into it. If you would like I can post the link of the video for you.

I know that when we had a pest service for a while they used the "organic" option which was rosemary oil, and it killed everything. Seems the really pungent aromatics do something - orange oil as well (for ants and termites). Lavender and peppermint would also smell great - so there's that. Anyway, look up rosemary oil insecticide. I can also tell you with rosemary in the garden, no spiders camp out in the stuff - and there's no shortage of black widows in our neck of the woods either.

Great series! There's quite a few natural predators out there that will readily relieve you of Red Backs 1> Mud Daubers - Saw one in your other video making a scene around the mud by your trees. Set them up an area they can nest and they will prey on Redbacks....sadly they do sting so aren't the preferred choice but they do work. 2> Preying Mantis - Locate a few of these beauties ones that can live in your area comfortably and they will devour Red backs....they love Widows and the females red mark actually beckons them. 3> Red ants - Though not the friendliest they do have an ability to get around webs and nab the web makers. Near you are some more ferocious ants especially a few in New Zealand and in Australia but they might prove more of a pest than the Red Backs. Fire Ants may be a good choice they are aggressive but if left alone they can be in fact a welcome guest to the garden. No Bulldog ants though lol them things still hold the record as most dangerous Ant in the world.

@christianbarbour466
@christianbarbour466 7 лет назад
That's a common myth. The common "daddy long legs" do not have venom glands and prey upon vegetation and other bugs when they can get away with it. In fact the daddy longlegs has the same fang structure of the brown recluse. Some variants of these spiders do have defensive secretions that will break down the bio matter of smaller insects but these spiders have nothing super dangerous to humans.

The Mole Cricket or devil bug (people do actually call it that too ^^) will eat the black widow's eggs, that is why they usually kill them quickly, the mole cricket will also kill the black widow, and snack on it...., I've watch too much discovery channel videos. LoL. The frontal part of the mole cricket is like armor, and medium to small sized spiders don't stand a chance usually, but it's thorax is softer and they can bite it. The mole cricket likes to borrow into the ground, and eats roots, eggs, and anything smaller than it.

rooie20149 Well, some of the ones I watched don't even come on anymore LoL, but anything to do with nature shows, like Wild Planet, World's most dangerous, World's weirdest, any nature documentaries, and then there are channels like Animal Planet, but I understand that that's not on every platform. Sometimes the Science channel shows nature documentaries. I never watched much cartoons as a kid, so I'd watch history, science and anything to do with animals. The one where I learned about the mole cricket was on Most Top 10...,but it's no longer around anymore. They show reruns every once in awhile though. But the mole cricket from what I've seen mainly feeds on roots of plants, but it is a predator some what, kind of like some insects that eat just about anything in its path. But it's primary food is small roots and worms that are underground.

A few tips for you (I hope you read this!) I've kept many many arachnids in my time and there's a few points I'd like to make to help with your 'pest control experiments'. 1.) The container is too damp. You are better off spraying with a light mist once a week for them to drink, with no water bowl. This species doesn't fair well in high humidity settings, and high humidity will most likely lead to fatalities as they can get pretty sick. 2.) Seperate them. Get a jar for each spider and take out their egg sacks with tweezers when they lay them. Feel free to hatch them out in a seperate tupperware and release them if you want to, or destroy them... it's up to you. 3.) To stop them escaping, and also have enough ventilation; get an elastic band and some sort of fine fabric for a lid for each jar. Or... get a coffe jar, cut off the top of the lid and super glue the fabric over it.To stop them going ontop, mix some rubbing alcohol and talc powder... the alcohol will quickly eveporate and leave a layer of powder, as soon as they walk on the powder, they will fall down. Look up how ant keepers stop ants from escaping their open containers in which they feed them. E.g. "AntsCanada" on RU-vid or look up formicarium (ant 'cages') setups.

when they flipped fast, the redback ended up biting it's own leg as you can see in the slow mo, then it started freaking out , so the devil bug ran away, as you see the poison started kicking in making it slower and slower and eventually killing it

Leo, I believe your "Devil Bugs" are Gryllotalpus Brachyptera, a short-winged species of mole cricket that is found in Australia. They are omnivores, and commonly feast on plant roots and tubers, as well as grubs and other subterranean insects.

@casualplaguedoctor
@casualplaguedoctor 7 лет назад
First make a different terrarium with a queen crazy ant and wait until they populate like crazy, then make a tube that leads to the red backs, then watch them die fast than it took for gonzo to disappear
@casualplaguedoctor
@casualplaguedoctor 7 лет назад
Red crazy ants populate fast and they are extremely territorial
@casualplaguedoctor
@casualplaguedoctor 7 лет назад
Also remember that you will have to buy the queen but I have had the same red back problem and making the red crazy ant family has been solving the red back problem and they die fast too so they won't get too populated. But also I have barely seen a red back in a few weeks after I introduced the colony to the backyard after testing them on my terrarium of red backs.
