I live in a small city in eastern Canada, when I go to the record store here it’s full of people buying 4K movies, records, CDs, it’s bumping

Right now there are a handful of DVD/BluRay discs at my local Best Buy and very little titles available . No CDs , no albums , so the access is very small . I pre-ordered Twister 4K UHD via Amazon and will do my own review , but I loved it and will be watching it again . I prefer a brick and mortar store , but I understand the costs . Streaming is very easy , but I buy the physical media whenever I can , but at a price point

What? Best Buy officially stopped selling physical movies in store and online earlier this year. Do they have some kind of clearance bin or something?

I would say the twister 4k hype has more to do with nostalgia than anything else. It is (arguably) a definitive 90s film and it's currently in the zeitgeist with the new movie coming out soon. Still promising of course.

Streaming sucks compared to physical media, the fact is that broadband data packets can't meet the conversion capabilities of 4k players, for instance streaming services do not offer Dolby Vision/Atmos conversion! So what's that mean?... It means at best you will get a 1080p HDX enhanced image across all streaming platforms with no Dolby Vision/Atmos, even if your TV is Dolby/Atmos ready. Just because you have a 4K TV doesn't mean that Netflix or Amazon is automatically going to upgrade all data packets to 4K, at best you are going to be stuck with an HDX image even when it say's 4K, only the Normies will be fooled into believing what they are seeing a 4K image when in fact they are watch a 1080p upscaled image. I've compared 4k digital on Fandango/Amazon compared to my Sony 4K player and streaming is unimpressive to say the least. I concur, keep collecting for the best image and sound.

100% correct! As far as streaming quality goes Fandango/VUDU is the worst. The picture quality is okay at best, but that is kinda okay because I still have a great Sharp 1080p TV. Now the audio is barely on the good side of awful. I purposely bought 4k movies for the Atmos tracks and I have never had any movie play in Atmos in all of the years I have had a complete Atmos capable system. Currently 7.2.4. I've contacted Vudu/Fandango several times and my concerns fall on deaf ears - they don't care! Netflix, Amazon, Apple and when I was using Disney+ those services are pretty good for the Atmos streams. However, I far and away prefer my 4k discs. Even DVD seems like VHS now. It's a bummer only a select few can afford the Kaleidescape system and movies.

I think there is a difference between dying and dead. Physical media IS DYING and you know this because every large outlet that sold physical media outside of Wal-mart has gotten out of the business. Wal-Mart is the last big box store that sells physical media in the United States. There is no other big chain that does. Now, you could say Barnes & Noble is one but I have been in that store...the section is small! Now, 4K sales are up 20% year over year hence why we are seeing now more than ever movies coming out in 4K steelbook special editions, etc., but where you can buy these is pretty much online and Wal-Mart. That is it. Not only that the sales of 4K are a fraction of what DVD and even blu-ray sales were in the 2010s. Personally, I love physical media. I have every one of my most favorite films in a 4K Steelbook and have them on display in a custom made shelf I made in my living room. I just love film and I want it in the best possible version you can get. Bottom line, I do believe 4K will be the last generation of physical media, but it will be on sale for years and years to come. I think 4K will last another 20 years like DVD's have because 8K just does not make sense.

I wonder if the future is print on demand like with Gravity. Worth the extended wait if you still know you can get a copy.

Physical media is necessary. If a company started making disks that are double the current diameter to fit original quality video and audio I'd sell a kidney to buy the new player and disks.

My dream for physical media is that eventually they'll start offering it in the original formats presented in the theater. I'd love to see The Dark Knight as shown in the IMAX format.

I didn’t realize it wasn’t in the same format. If that’s the case that’s too bad. That imax format is 👍👍

I agree with you even if the disk diameters doubled and a new player had to be bought. However, The best available today is the Kaleidescape system, but you have to take out a second mortgage to buy the equipment.

In Search of Physical Media had an explosion in popularity due to a controversy, the whole write-up can be found online. I had viewed his channel quite a few times previous to that but when I read over the post on the 4K blu-ray sub it was unfortunately pretty damning evidence so I haven't been back to his channel. I also realized over time that he also tends to list every single disc he reviews as a must-buy and has a childhood nostalgia story to go along with nearly every single movie he discusses. All this while pushing his affiliate links about a dozen times per video so all of that put a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. That being said I'm glad that people are taking an interest in physical media again. I sincerely hope we get a remaster of Seinfeld as well. I'm excited to see how well the 4K set of Friends does.

The internet is a beautiful thing. The barrier to make a product is so much lower now. At least in that aspect. It would seem natural to want to remaster every media ever made. I feel like physical media is on a bit of a crunch though. Internet speeds will only get faster and faster. Until then, we have to vote w our wallets.

The ones saying that are also the same ones who proclaimed the death of vinyl. As we all know, that didn't exactly happen. As far as the Redbox situation: That was the case of the fish stinking at the head. Their parent company, Chicken Soul For The Soul, was a clear case of doing too much. They bought a few streaming services, a couple of indie film studios and a DVD service. Chicken Soup For The Soul tried to pull a Lionsgate move, but didn't have the hit films to justify it. They should have stayed in their lane and focused on their self help books.

For James in search of physical media it’s pretty much whatever ever he says is a must buy is a must buy although it actually shocked me how spot on his review is of James Cameron’s titanic is on 4k which he gave a score of 9.9. It actually shocked me because whenever you see review on RU-vid that’s that close to perfection for the most part it’s not that spot on for me for the most part that high of a review score it’s good but not that good but with James it’s an exception because I save up and try to buy a lot his recommendations and high review scores, and I actually bought twister on 4k yesterday and it is awesome.

I also bought Titanic based on his recommendation and he was right! That transfer is stellar and I’m so happy they did right by that film and gave it the treatment it deserved.

one thing that may be happening is that the people who stick with physical media may be trending in the direction of collectors so I could see steelbook type versions being a bigger deal in the future.

Not sure if you mention and your twister review, but one of the biggest things about that movie is, I believe it was the first movie released on DVD. Is that true? I have always heard that through all my years of watching movies that it was. So if that is true, it is crazy. How the first DVD is now in 4K.
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome 2 месяца назад
After some checking, it does appear Twister is likely the first DVD release in the U.S. Fun fact, the first DVD I ever watched was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. And I watched it at my friend’s house where we always watched Twister.

This topic always has me always rolling my eyes. Lets enjoy what we have at the moment. One question for you why isnt everyone singing the praises of the movie Roma atmos sound. I think its amazing the subtle use of it, the seperation, crowd scenes etc. And the cinematography, you could frame each shot as apicture.

I agree! The Atmos track on Roma is stunning. I made a video where I highlighted how good it is. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8uChw_JHc9E.html

The 'In Search of Physical Media' channel blew up recently in subs due to IRL threats against his person, and that rallied support for his channel. He literally got thousands of subs over night after posting that video.

It's what inspired me to support the guy by subbing. It hasn't died in my house. If it's worth watching multiple times, it's in my Blu-Ray collection. I don't own a single digital copy of anything (at least not that I've redeemed). In fact, if I *really* liked the movie after seeing it in the cinema, I'll mark the Blu-Ray release date on my calendar.
