I concur with Rob. As much as I like to see riders and courses pushing the envelope, I don’t really want to see riders getting seriously injured. That canyon gap with the scaffolding has serious consequences if you come up short. I think it’s too much.

Matt and Bernie cleared that jump with very big lucky and you can easy judge that from the videos. The take off was ridiculously explosive. We all have been happy seeing they've made it but this was hell of a rsik.

I think the difference between Hardline and Rampage is the "racing" component. Hardline, you're on the clock. You still need to go down as fast as possible to the bottom of the hill, pushing as hard as you can in every section. So if you arrive 1% cooked at the canyon gap and for some reason you're too short or too long, that could be catastrophic.

I'm pretty sure the chain isn't going to die anytime soon. I mean you don't see a bunch of dirt bikes with shaft drive or belt do you? Nor do I think pedal bikes will become a thing of the past. I love my ebike but think about this we have all kinds of power tool but yet hand tools haven't disappeared . Maybe the derailleur will end up like cantilever brakes replaced by disc for the most part. Just my thoughts and opinions. Love the podcast keep the wheels turning

This jump didn’t need to be tested to see it doesn’t work - this is what's absurd about the whole thing. 3 riders were allowed to put themselves at risk when it was so clearly obvious of the ‘pitfalls’ of this feature - excuse the pun. Looking at the Darkfest ramps, as a comparison, its clear to see how the curvature of the take off lends itself to the right trajectory, plus factoring in the forces the rider will feel through their body. There is a science to building a good ramp and the Atherton’s threw that out the window with this one. 'Push the sport', my ass. In that case why didn't Gee or Dan hit it? Because they knew just by looking at the ramp - anyone with jumping experience knew, its why Bernard and Matt were sh*tting bricks. The Atherton's have lost any respect I had for them. Reckless. They can go stick their bikes where sun don't shine.

Rob made the point that Rampage lines are designed by the rider doing it. There is no option for the Hardline.

Just to add to he ZF portfolio: they are already doing electric motors and play quietly big in the EV space. They offer complete integrated front axles with steering and electric motors. From what I’ve seen, they also offer alternate versions of this for different car makers.

The ZF motor! Its Bluetooth NO cables, it fits several dif motor systems on the Bike, the Battery must have Cables Tough, but it could be looking like a' Carbonsock that goes around the hole frame Triangle,built into the frame glued to gether like the Pole!

My 2cents; Wireless bar controls/droppers/e-suspension powered by kinetic movement Exotic materials used in gear box motors/batteries to provide/justify traditional tiered pricing we see today in SLX/XT/XTR etc Custom software maps provide/justify traditional tiered pricing (Bosch already did this very shady imo). Controller (ECU) to serve as a central tie in point for peripherals. Separated from the motor making motors 'dumb', allowing motors to be reduced in size, and the ECU to relocated to other areas of the bike. Going wireless would cut down on product design headaches and maybe some weight
@MinskUK
@MinskUK 2 месяца назад
Ultimately I don’t want my bike to be completely removed from the riding experience. Just because you can have auto shift, abs and wireless brakes doesn’t mean it’s something that’s actually desired. If we’re not careful we’ll end up with ‘trial correction’ when we ride slightly off line and ‘auto brake’ that instead of helping, catapults you into a tree😅.

Hey guys, nice work. Regarding the ZF motor being easy to install (~31:00). Aren't they just saying it's easier designing a frame around a more compact motor? If the "diameter" of the motor is significantly bigger than the TQ HPR50, it won't be that easy though... It will eat into the chainstay length and BBH.

It's not so much the gap 70ft it is highly doable, the drop and scaffolding on the other hand make it death. They did take some of the lip angle off and decreased the gap by a meter but decided to pull it, maybe next year.

Problem with planetary gears is there is a bit of drag. Classified hubs use planetary gears in their hubs and the only down side to them is their drag and slight weight increase

The Sachs RS engine is from ZF. The engine is a bit impetuous. So ZF must have made a big leap in development. I would trust them. Since it didn't explicitly say full power, I'm guessing 70Nm.

BTW Whatever happened to the Ceramic Speed shaft drive transmission without derailleur ("Driven")? It doesn't have the weight loss at the rear hub advantage but otherwise it had some interesting ideas...

MGU are interesting, hopefully they come down in cost. Autoshift has all the data it needs today, if you have a cycling computer, climb grade, length, etc could all be fed into Autoshift AI. I think that is next big integration is ebikes with partnerships with Garmin, Wahoo, Karoo to enable 2 way comms between bike and gps.

When are "they" going to make a MGU that has more than the 160Nm that I have on my BaFang motor now? I want an MGU that has at least 160 Nm and also has the trans inside!
@weedfreer

You're all missing a point here, or, at least, you didn't mention it Hardline is a race. Rampage is about styling it out. A rider hits that Hardline gap at speed, if there's any mud, wind, or wetness leading into it, then, the likelihood that a rider may wash out and not make it raises to unacceptable levels.... without a net. Even with a net, the thing looked far too kicky.
@andrewhillman9632
@andrewhillman9632 2 месяца назад
It's a slippery slope. The need to one up the difficulty versus the previous year and get more outrageous shots for markeiing. It's a climate that could, un-checked, lead to dire consequences, life altering injuries that impact not just the rider for the remainder of their life but their family as well.
@p199a

electric motors DO NOT NEED gears. Tesla can do from 1-300 km/h without gears. Gears are only there because of BIG companies making $$. You can have eMTB without cassette, derailleur, shifter or gearbox.
@stanmustard7292
@stanmustard7292 2 месяца назад
I think the gearing is necessary for the rider to be able to maintain a good cadence. But you're right about the motor not needing it.

Cameras on a Tesla, not such a great example. In the dark or in the rain (of both) you're constantly getting messages about cameras being blocked or blinded. Even worse my wife hit a gatepostin ours because it couldn't detect it's presence, because it was dark and wet 🤷 sticks that they've cut cost by removing the proper sensors

Both 90 footers have no real bail out zone, if you come up short you hit the face of the landing or land on rubble/rocks. I walked around there last year completely gob smacked at the stuff they make look easy. As you say the camera's do the course terrain no justice at all. Geuse you never seen brendog doing his cannon gap lol. .... the speed you come down that ramp and the lip t the end by physics = you are clearing that jump. It looks as if jim munro keeked his pants just at the lip, which I would also tbh. And the scaffold is fine it will be erected and certified, so all non points from yourself just like the media dont let the facts get in the way of a good story and sensationalism sells. Theres my tun foil hat theory 😂 Planetry gears give more torque also. It makes sense as i have been screeming for for for years a motorised gearbox aka the bikes holy grail... from a mech tech
