The new Redcat Gen8 v2!
THE Rich D RC picked this up recently, and dropped it off here at our place to get some work done on it.
In this first video of the series, we take the truck out for it's initial shakedown in all stock form, trying to help identify any issues we can work on.
This first drive immediately pointed me to the bumpers - it is ALWAYS THE BUMPERS! They get in the way all of the time.
To help, we get the grinder out and re-shape the bumpers into a more accommodating shape.
This Redcat Gen8 v2 really is a great crawler - literally the best performance/$ you can get in RC crawling! My opinion anyway!

Great vid. Done the same thing to mine but left the front bumper thick enough to accept a winch. I also swapped out the tires. Rubber is good on Gen8 tires but that memory foam was a mistake on Redcat's part. If temp is below 55° they are hard as a rock. Put Proline Hyrax's on and what a difference that made. I also just did a video on custom cheap wheel weights. That along with the Hyrax tires makes huge difference. You wouldn't believe how much better of a crawler it is now. Also got rid of that top heavy stock body and went with the Dodge Ram from Proline. Good luck with yours, it's a great performer for that price point.

Thanks for the tips! Tires is next on the list for sure. The owner really wants to run the AXE body, so we will see what we can do with that. I certainly plan to add some weight down low to help out.

Great! This is one awesome truck - especially for the $$$. Check out the rest of the playlist this is part of. Once I did all of the mods on this truck, it was a REALLY GOOD performing truck!

I’ve got a V1 & an Axe edition. I got the 3300kv 550can Axe combo from hobbywing and put the original axe system in my V1. About those tires? I felt the same way about them when they were new, but after changing the foams and getting some miles on them? I’m so happy with them now! Thanks so much for sharing the bumper mod! I may have to do that with both of mine?! 🍻from🇨🇦

They are very good, actually. It is surprisingly good straight out of the box, and even when I am done throwing a bunch of upgrades at it - it will still cost less than an Axial SCX10iii!

Great video! I put a metal front bumper on my Gen8 because I broke the stock one first time out lol. The only other upgrades I've done are new new wheels and tires, servo, lights, interior and driver. I also bought a clear gen8 body and painted it.

Just wanted to mention that I moved the bumpers in on my gen 8 and my son's as well and the only problem we had is on the rear with the bumper pushed in the the body hangs up on rocks etc and eventually wound up splitting the body all the way up passed the rear tail light, granite we caught it soon enough and easy fix with some shoe goo but just something to keep an eye on!!

Thanks for the watch-out! We will be putting the AXE body on this truck, and plan to really do some looking at how to modify/reinforce it in the rear there. Thanks for the tip!

@@swissk31 no problem, what I used on are's was some old clear lexan from bodys I cut and some shoe goo from the bottom by the bumper up to about the rear window in both corners, seems to be working! Hope it helps

Best budget mod for any especially my 4 redcats was the holmes hobby crawlmaster motor and the 1080 hobbywing esc!

I just got set of duratrax deep woods tires and metal beadlocks. Love them both. I just broke the bar off my front bumper and now looking for metal one. Also have treal 11mm brass hexs.

Great video! I have a V1 Gen 8 that I absolutely love. The panhard mount on the axle wasn't actually rigid and attached so I make a brace that goes from the diff pumpkin to the panhard mount

Interesting! I'll give that a look. I thought it was one of the stronger parts on the V2 though.

@@RoadsideRC It may be reinforced. The V2 has better axle housings, which may remedy that. But the V1 slop was super noticeable and even took away some steering performance

Very good mod to the front bumper, I have mounted the tires branded Louise from Ebay, they performs really well, have a soft compound and comes in different threads.

3/8" aluminum tube bent bumpers. They worked very well but my OCD wants them to be better. LOTS of tyre clearance.

The Reefs sliders aren’t cheap but they were my favorite upgrade after tires. I tucked them up high and they were so perfect. Wish they made more options!

i took a couple of them v1 and made a 6x6 made the skidpalte mod, panhard mod, servo relocarion, brras links, aluminum beadlock, proline hyrax,proline 2 stage foams, shock tower keys, power wagon cab, 12t 5 slots motor, 1080 esc, costumes siliders, patina paint, rust allthe frame ancomponents

Best mod I did to my gen 8 was Holmes crawlmaster sport 13t hw1080 controller and 13t pinion gear on 3s :) everything else is essentially stock did two complete bearing swaps in mine so far it took a ton of abuse this last summer

I do like my Hobbywing 1080 and Holmes Hobbies motors. That was not on the list yet....but you might be convincing me to go for it. Why so many bearing swaps?

@@RoadsideRC the gen 8 is great but it has tiny weak bearings. I keep blowing portal bearings and the input bearing on pinion gear. Red lock tight that pinion input gear onto its shaft it’s backed out on me a couple times.

Great video man. Got one theses in purple for the gf and i put a 27t axial motor traxxas receiver and transmitter and trimmed the foam in the stock tires put em on my crawler amd now she has ebay 20$ that perform so well lol. No jumping in the transmission over stuff and throttle controll is so good with the trx tranmitter and receiver paired with a higher turn motor. 17t wayyyyyyy to low of a turn motor in my opinion!! She loves the mods i did hope yours work well too! Ordering a mst 2.0 soon thanks for the recomended drift car in the past!

Great! I have been thinking of putting a Hobbywing 1080 ESC in this to see if it helps the low-speed throttle control, or is it just the controller. I hope the ESC will do the trick. Good luck with the drift car. Let me know if you have questions along the way.

@@RoadsideRC it seems to me that its in the drive line and transmission gear mesh is not the highest quality machining or something, because ive swapped all with different stuff but nothing sensored. so you might see alot more rpm controll just in a sensored esc and motor, and even more control with remote and receiver swapped. Cant wait to see you resolve issues and sharing them its very helpful! And i will thanks!

Now move the control arms to the longest holes and make the wheel base longer, you'll gain another 2 degrees +/- on that as well.

Yeah - I didn't do that, as I was worried about getting the wheelbase too long. The truck already doesn't turn great, and lengthening the wheelbase makes that even worse.

I install the cooling fan on the motor of my red cat Gen. 8 and I had to trim half of the centre support over the motor.

I updated my tires to voodoo KLR/M with Treal wheels.That was my first update.Thinking I will switch out my esc to a 1080 to get better control.Really enjoy your channel.

I am really thinking of doing the Hobbywing 1080 also. The low-speed throttle control is not great with this ESC.

Awesome Video I'm waiting for my Portal Axles and centre transmission from Gen 7. I can't wait to see what you do to yours might just give me some ideas. Pro line dual stage phones are fantastic in those tires If they have the same issue as the 7

Yeah the stock on the gen 8 is memory foam, I’d get the integy 2 stage foams cause they are way cheaper

Nice work on the video! Definitely looking forward to the next in the series. The IH Scout body and those tires always looks aggressive in videos and pictures, I like it. Think you will eventually do a shootout with your other trucks, like the TRX-4 sport?

70 degress is a bit more than needed considering climbing limits.

Honestly, for most things we do, I would prefer over 90 deg. It is all about being able to come up to an obstacle and get the tires on it, instead of the bumper hitting. If you check out some of what I have done to the new Element Ecto - the tires actually stick out further than the bumper now!

Yes and yes. I flipped them, trimmed excess plastic off of them, and trimmed the bottom of the body to match.

Always been curious because I rarely see a good angle.... but do I spy a Nova in the Garage?. 👀👀🤔 correct me if I’m wrong, I know it’s an rc channel but maybe one day you’ll get a matching body and do a real scale to 1/10 scale video replicating it 🤔 could be cool🤷‍♂️. Seems like a good video, can't watch it. T Mobile keep screwing up. Now getting worse reception on phone and internet. They suck! They must be using a coat hanger on their transmitting tower. But my radio and shortwave still works fine. Getting the green one and getting rid of the Velcro before I crack the body.
