Found your channel a week ago - immediately subscribed. I don't know an ISO from my a**hole - strictly point and click is me - but I do know someone who is enthusiastic about nature and helping others develop their own skills when I see them. Your videos are both beautiful and fun to watch. I'm making it my hobby to see as many mammals as I can (UK on the list for next year I hope) so your tips on setting up for photography are also excellent for maximising chances of seeing wildlife. Such an important message. And all credit to you for revealing your diagnosis Pops. I urge all of your male viewers, If you are going to the toilet more frequently than normal get your PSA levels checked. It may simply be an enlarged prostate. In most cases it is, but if it is cancer the sooner it's caught the better. All the best Pops, I know you'll be in good hands.

Many thanks for your kind words, I was more than happy in revealing my diagnosis if it encourages any of Daniels subscribers to get their PSA levels checked. As I said I had no symptoms (not even going to the toilet more often) just very lucky it was picked up during my annual checkup. Pops

Great video. It just shows you what you can do with local Birds in the park. Also good luck to pops. I was diagnosed early with a PSA blood test, that was 16 years ago and I am still here and have no intentions of going anywhere. I wish pops every success with his surgery.

Many thanks, just got back home from surgery, they found a possible pre-cancerous tumor on my Appendix so whipped that out as well. Thank god for my annual check-up! Pops

The cormorants are in breeding plumage Dan. The white collar & bright green eye is a signifier of this. Another excellent vlog from you two great guys again, & as you know I was privy to Pops’ ‘news’ prior to him announcing it here - but… Well done Stuart, good on you for facing up to it head on; & not only that, but big respect & a huge well done for spreading the word on the importance of getting yourself checked! Not watched the video fully, having seen the start I am exactly the same as pops. Had mine removed end of August last year, 2023, pretty much fully recovered now. 2 PSAs done both very low results. Best of luck pops if you have the same journey as me you won’t be too long away from your next video.

Great video Dan, it definitely helps when the wildlife are accustomed to humans, even if the humans walk in front of the lens. The full frontal Cormorant was absolutely wonderful, the eyes were like precious stones, and some superb Heron footage, great to have a camera on loan. Wish Pops the best of luck with his upcoming procedure, he'll be fighting fit in no time, just sitting watching Bullies Siskins Redpoll and a lone Brambling still hanging around the feeders, all the best Derek 👍

Great video Dan, really enjoyed this. Firstly, very best wishes to Pops for the treatment and hope all goes well. Great photos of the heron with the frog. We regularly get a heron visiting our garden ponds and i have seen it grab a frog from time to tilke and fly off with it but never managed to photograph that particular situation, however, just a few days ago I did photograph a heron with one of our fish and took a sequence of close ups as it juggled the fish before it was swallowed. I too bought a Z180-600 just a few weeks ago. I had a Z 100-400 which had served me well for the past two years but I was frustrated by the lack of reach needed for locations such as Pulborough Brooks. I tried a borrowed 180-600 and carried out back to back tests against the 100-400 with the 1.4xTC and, despite not being an S-Line lens, the 180-600 was noticeably better than the 100-400 set-up so I had to do it. I think this is possibly the best performing and value for money lens in Nikon's whole Z range.

I must admit having used the 180-600 over a couple of weeks I think it’s a tremendous lens and at the price point is sure to become a huge asset to many people. Best wishes to you, Pops. I'm in a similar situation. I went in for a follow up appointment a year after kidney stones and the doctor found cancer. I'm having my left kidney removed April 2nd. I never had any symptoms.

Hello both, Sorry to here Pops is not to good, I hope his surgery gose well. I have only got one lung and 3 weeks ago they told me my good one now has is not to good. Yes I to can find carry kit around a bit of an issue. But my wife now carries my camera bag, with both my Z8 and Z9 three or four lenses. I just say she dose not have to go to the Jim any more....Good luck Pops and our thoughts are with you.

Your video's are excellent. They Have inspired me At 62 and 40 plus years enjoying photography. This would be coming full circle for me as my first Nikon was back in 82 with the FM2 and a RAF climbing expedition in Canada with 24, 35 and 180mm lenses. Thank you. I have come into some money recently. Would you be kind enough to give me your thoughts on Wild Life Setup. I current use Fujifilm equipment for travel and landscape photography which I intend keeping. I am looking at the Z8 with the 24-120 lens, but what combination of longer lenses. Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 S Lens, Nikon Z 400mm f4.5 VR S Lens, Nikon Z 800mm f6.3 VR S Lens and 1.4 teleconverter. You sung the praises of the Nikon Z 180-600mm f5.6-6.3 VR Lens would you replace the Z100 -400 and the Z400 f4.5 prime and replace them with the Z180-600. Any advice would be appreciated Thank You.

Thanks very much Mark, I always really enjoy reading comments from people who have been inspired by my videos. To me that’s the greatest compliment I could receive! Now to get onto the serious topic of kit. The Z8 is a fantastic camera, pops has recently purchased one and he absolutely loves it. For the lens choice I think a lot of it depends upon you (in terms of ability to carry heavy lenses) the subjects you want to photograph and budget. All the lenses you have mentioned are owned by pops and I have used them all. I can honestly say that the 180-600 is a truly fantastic piece of kit with the versatility of a good zoom. Its limiting factors are its low light capability due to it only having f6.3 and it’s quite heavy. That said it is more than usable handheld and perfect on a tripod or monopod. The 100-400 is a much lighter option but personally as it’s a zoom where the barrel is exposed to the elements I question whether it will genuinely stand up to the weather? The 400 f4.5 is a sublime lens and really light, however the range of 400 will definitely leave you wanting a TC to extend it. The 800 is an awesome lens and I love getting the opportunity to use it. For bird photography this lens is perfect 👌🏻 however it is heavy (ish) and there are times that it is unusable if the subject comes too close (minimal focus distance is 5m). Overall if I had the money to spend I would purchase the 180-600 and possibly the 800 if my budget stretched to it. Hope that helps mate and all the very best 👍🏻

Thank you again I hope your camera is returned ASAP and your dad continues to recover at a pace. Time spent with your Dad is special. I lost my Dad to Dementia 2 years ago. We had many lovely day at Middleton Lakes RSPB a 25min drive. I have canals and the National Forest on my doorstep along with the river Mease within walking distance. Thanks again.

Great video as usual, I am in same age group as pops and have a Z8, I had my prostate removed 5 plus years ago and all is well now, they wanted to do surveillance but I wanted it removed, thank god this was just before lockdown and all ops and check ups were cancelled. All the best and do the pelvic exercises which are a great help.

Do you ever get criticism or lectures from people when you are using your drone, i have. At a nature reserve, in the car park but well away from other cars. Guy strides towards me as i am setting up. Stands over my drone and yawps 'you cant fly that here, have you got a license'. Yes i can and i dont need a licence i replied. ' we will see about that (gets phone out, searches for drone license). Yes, you need one he says, no idont i reply, its under 250 g. Got fed up with this back and forth crap so packed it away.

I’ve had it a couple of times mainly from idiots who don’t know what they are talking about, like you say it’s under 250g so no license required. TBH I tend to do all my drone work at the very end of the shoot and I’m really quick so by the time someone realises I’ve finished 😂

Thank you for your kind words. Absolutely love my Z8 handles and performs just like my Z9. Don't get me wrong my Z9 will always be my first choice camera but for a long day out with lots of leg work my Z8 combined with Z400 f4.5 prime is the perfect lightweight set for me. Pops

Thank you, normally you have to ask for the test (ridiculous I know!!!) but luckily my nurse offered it to me.

Many thanks so great to hear about your success with Prostrate Cancer, I'm back home from surgery now and all's well plus they found a possible pre-cancerous tumor on my Appendix so whipped that out as well. If I had gone down the Radiotherapy route they would not have found that problem, having said that my surgeon told me that my situation was very rare in fact it was a first for him. Thank god for my annual check-up and had a PSA test. Pops

Many thanks. I have set-up the Z8 menu basically the same as my Z9 (for wildlife photography) and I have to say it performed exactly the same especially the auto-focus systems. The battery life is no where as good as the Z9 however the cost of a spare for the Z8 is a fraction of the cost of a Z9 battery. I've only been out with the Z8 on a few occasions but already I'm blown away with the handling and performance of the Z9's little brother.

Can I wish Pops all the very best with his surgery. Prostate cancer really scares me as I have an enlarged prostate and I often wonder if an annual PSA test is enough.

Thank you for your kind words. In my case it was only after the PSA test they decided to do a MRI scan which showed an area of concern, it was only after a Biopsy of that area that the Cancer was confirmed. Pops

Cancer really is a horrible disease- my wife is currently undergoing chemotherapy after breast cancer surgery in November.
