Rede Tupi was the first TV station to operate in Brazil, being inaugurated on 18 September 1950 by journalist Assis Chateaubriand. The generating stations were TV Tupi São Paulo and TV Tupi Rio de Janeiro. The network started to experience trouble during the 1970s, including being in too much debt, which resulted in a strike by the actors of their telenovelas. Things went from bad to worse after a fire broke out in 1978. Eventually, Rede Tupi was shut down on 18th July 1980 by the federal government of Brazil (military dictatorship at the time).

3:28 fun fact, that logo only lasted 2 months. Premiering in may 2nd 1977, the logo www brought in to give tupi a more up to date image, howerever soon after it was introduced, it seemed things just got worse and worse at a very fast pace. So on july 30th of the same year, the old logo was brought back.
