Did you install RHEL directly without VMware on rack mount server? 😮

@ryangallagher-ps6jk there are VMware you could installing it over hardware without using operating system. On rack mount server, we use this way to avoid miss hardware models on kernel. Yeah you can install it directly without VMware.

Ive been looking at these are they a decent value? I want to get a r730xd for my first homelab but im worried it might be a bit overkill. Im a complete beginner with essentially no knowledge so i might be better off starting with my old optiplex. Either way at 3-400 used, these seem like a decent grab.

I feel like you are reading my mind ... in the past :D Now I can honestly say - it is an overkill, BIG time. Am I happy with my overkill - ABSOLUTELY. Did I have problems with it, yes. Are there going to be problems in the future - well I hope so (that's how we learn!). Would I get it again...hmm - that would have to be an entirely different conversation (probably yes). It's really awesome to have a commercial-grade server heating up the attic in the winter. In the summertime though this is a bit of a problem. This thing is HUGE, it's HEAVY and it's really LOUD when starting up. If like me you live in an apartment - you better have that attic space available. Feel's like a good idea for another video though :)

@Linuxdeveloper I don't mind the noise and heat my main focus is just the right amount of overkill that I'll be excited about it and that sounds like exactly it, I know dell consumer pcs have a lot of proprietary components do you run in to similar things with their server lineup?

@micahsmith959 Until now I had no problems finding components for the server - the issues I mentioned earlier started with a mainboard which connects all of the hard drives (it literally burned). I found a replacement on ebay for around 80 Euro, got it delivered to Ireland within less than a week. I also replaced the DVD drive with an ssd slot-in adapter. There is no problem with finding network interfaces, or anything else for that matter that I wanted to upgrade until now. What I'm left with is a lot of RAM slots which for now remain empty. It's probably a good idea to check what is on your mind and how easy it is to find it online, but I can only describe my xperience as positive for now. Hope this helps :)

@Linuxdeveloper Sweet as long as parts are still mostly available I'll probably jump on it the xd version has a whopping 23 drive bays and from what I heard it's pretty likely each bay supports up to 16tb even though that's not what dell says

Don't forget that a minimum 4GB RAM is required for it.

It 's a valuable reminder, I have 48 GB in there - so I'm safe ;) Docs present slightly different facts and you can indeed build stable systems with less than 2 GB : access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/9/html/performing_a_standard_rhel_9_installation/system-requirements-reference_installing-rhel
