Marvelous! Would you guys cover Stoicism?
@AncientGreeceRevisited
@AncientGreeceRevisited 4 года назад
We might. But our mission is to recapture the "inceptual" world-view of Greece. In that regard, the works of Homer are more telling than a system of thought that came late in the culture's development. I understand that Stoicism is currently enjoying an "online revival," with Marcus Aurelius becoming something of an internet meme, but we must never forget that its ideas found their footing during a time of cultural decline, where much of the original concepts of nature as understood by Plato were already receding from consciousness.

Atoms are needed to counter the second law of thermodynamics. That makes it possible to reassemble a new oak, from the decayed leftovers of plants and minerals. Lucretius describes how atoms are necessary to rebuild order from chaotic 'mud'.

@@sambarryofficial True, there is a great story about Diogenes, the famous sage who lived inside a giant pot in the center of Athens, about his expulsion from his home City of Sinope (a rather shameful thing back in those times). After establishing himself as this strange, homeless philosopher/tramp that even Alexander the Great had to visit once during his life, some of his critiques teased him about the event of his expulsion by saying something to the effect of "now, you pretend to be all wise, but even your compatriots could not support you and inflicted the greatest harm by sending you away." He replied in great wit... "well, I took my revenge by inflicting an even greater harm... I left them behind!" The reason for his expulsion was that he "forged the coin" of his City when he was entrusted the treasury (an even greater cause for shame). And to that he replied "I had been given an omen by the oracle at Delphi that said 'the coin you shall forge'. As I was young, I though that meant to actually forge the coinage of my city, but now I know that my task is to render ALL coinage invalid." I think he meant through the teaching of philosophy... but for some reason, this story always comes to my mind when talking about Crypto and NFTs... So, as you appear very enthusiastic about all these topics... I though that I would share it here.

Greek philosophy and science sprouted from the cadaver of Greek religion, after they killed it. Whether or not this was a good thing remains to be seen.
@AncientGreeceRevisited
@AncientGreeceRevisited 2 года назад
it goes deeper than that actually. It's definitely nor certain whether Aristotle intented logic to be used the way it is in say... a modern computer. Or whether he though there was something particularly human about it, something related to "rhetorics." There is a minority school in philosophy that believes the West to have misappropriated the Greeks rather than "stolen" their work. Think of Heidegger and Leo Strauss, or even Nietzsche for that matter.

It's so sad that ignorance and rage burnt the Library of Alexandria, among so many other sources of information about our past.
@AncientGreeceRevisited
@AncientGreeceRevisited 3 года назад
I've heard a story whereby the library of Alexandria was accidently burnt by Julius Caesar as he was trying to escape his pursuers when he fled Egypt. But don't quote me on that, I need to look it up properly. In general however, yes, it's very sad. And yet, are we not doing similar things today with online censorship?
