You might want to consider adding what I'll call, "The Mike Milbury Factor." Whatever team drafted the worst player has to keep that player and let the next team get a better player.

Tears almost come to my eyes when you write down Ricci. What a great guy and player. Not a SJ fan but I Ricci is a guy that is honorable. Made his own contracts, didn't use an agent and hard worker on the ice. You should do a career video on him! He's one that the next generation probably wont remember but what we need in the game. Great content Shannon That Jagr pick over Brodeur must have been a little bit harder than you made it seem though.

Hitchcock had Keith Primeau be more defensive when he became the Coach of the Flyers Primeau was going against the other teams top centers so he wasn't scoring as much one of his biggest goals as a Flyer when he got that OT winner vs the Penguins that goal changed the whole playoff series around and the Flyers won the series 4 to 2

Knowing what kind of career he'd go on to have, I wonder if this were redone if Quebec wouldn't have been under pressure to take Brodeur. As amazing as Jagr was, 3 cups, 2 cup finals, multiple Vezinas, gold medal, etc. etc. Winningest goalie ever, yadda yadda. I'd still have taken Jagr, but I wonder if Quebec would have, with a do-over, knowing what Brodeur would become. Some subjectivity there.
@andrewjmschroeder
@andrewjmschroeder 2 года назад
Loves these older redrafts, since their careers are all already over. I find it hard to take too much out of a 2017 re-draft due to it's recency, but even something as old as the 2000s is more easy to rank, as the players are far more known than young careers.

Kozlov was a testament to the depth of the Detroit Red Wings. He was a very good player and agreed in hindsight that he was a first-round talent. Also I think Owen Nolan would've been taken by the Flyers as he was a prototypical power forward that the Flyers coveted especially at that time.

The fun story of this draft actually took place on the last day of the regular season. Pittsburgh & the Islanders were fighting for the last playoff spot. If Pittsburgh tied their last game vs. Buffalo, they're tied in points with the Islanders, but get into the playoffs instead of the Islanders because of more wins. So last game of the season, they're playing vs. Buffalo, and future Islander Uwe Krupp scores in OT for the Sabres, knocks the Pens out of the playoffs and the Islanders get in. So in the upcoming draft, the Penguins, picking 5th, get Jagr, and the Islanders, picking 6th, get Scott Scissons, he of the two game NHL career. The Islanders other reward was a 5 game wipe out by the Rangers in the playoffs. The Buffalo-Pens game was on ESPN, so I got to watch it.

The Canucks really dropped the ball here. Petr Nedved was a good player, but compared to some of the other names that were available who could have helped in that '94 run, coupled with Pat Quinn's aversion to paying players anywhere near what they were worth, it wasn't a great pick.

LaFontaine/Mogilny/Tkachuk top line....

Flyers do not draft Zubov. He's not a mucker and grinder. This is why they took Ricci instead of Jagr in the actual draft. But as you did this draft and the 1991 draft, had the Nordiques took Jagr and Forsberg they'd still be in Quebec. Speaking of which, it's sad to see that on that board we still have the Nordiques, Whalers, and original Jets.

@drezzrodriguez
@drezzrodriguez 2 года назад
I love hearing the rationales behind redrafts - and they always make sense in hindsight! I've often wondered though, usually teams outside of the top 2-3 are picking to fill needs - not necessarily the best player available. Also, the odds of a goaltender going early in a first round back in those days was unlikely. So if I were to predict, I would have had: 1) Jagr 2) Tkachuk 3) Weight (best centre available - I recall reading an article about DET wanting to draft a centre) Then going by position that the team drafted 4) Zhamnov 5) Bondra 6) Nedved 7) Zubov It adds a layer of complexity to why players went where they did in a redraft situation instead of just plugging in the best player based on their career.
