red's part one
"Red's (1981)" is owned by paramount
This movie tells the true story of John Reed, a radical American journalist around the time of World War I. He soon meets Louise Bryant, a respectable married woman, who dumps her husband for Reed and becomes an important feminist and radical in her own right. After involvement with labor and political disputes in the US, they go to Russia in time for the October Revolution in 1917, when the Communists siezed power. Inspired, they return to the US, hoping to lead a similar revolution. A particularly fascinating aspect of the movie is the inclusion of interviews with "witnesses", the real-life surviving participants in the events of the movie.

An superb film in so many regards. American history that we are never taught. I met Margaret Sanger’s widower in New York, at Books & Co. on Madison Avenue. I asked him about Jack Reed, and he told me Reed had taught him to swim in Provincetown.

4:38 - That's Henry Miller. Priceless footage. I wonder if Beatty has anymore of this footage that wasn't put in the film. Must be. Priceless. Just priceless. Henry Miller -- for me -- is one of the great American writers that no on reads anymore. What a rich talent. I recommend 'Tropic of Capricorn' most of all. What an imagination. And what a portrait of New York in the early part of the 20th century.

To gain perspective on the lives of Reed and Bryant, Beatty filmed interviews with a group of men and women, referred to only as "The Witnesses" as early as 1971. As well as being listed in the opening credits, identified the witnesses in its March 1982 issue.[8] In a capsule review for , film critic Vincent Canbyrefers to them as "more than two dozen very, very old people, billed only as The Witnesses, whom Mr. Beatty interviewed about the Reeds and their long-gone times." He went on to say, "More than anything else in these interviews give the film its poignant point of view and separate it from all other romantic adventure films ever made."[9] "The most evocative aspect of the presentation is a documentary enhancement - interviews with a number of venerable 'witnesses,' whose recollections of the period help to set the scene, bridge transitions and preserve a touching human perspective," wrote Gary Arnold of .[10]

Reed said the war was about profits. He was wrong, it was about something worse. It was pride. Such a huge difference between 1914 and '39. In '39 the attitudes from the man on the street, especially Britian and France was, "Let's get this over with." In 1914 it was, "Oh please don't have this war be over until I can join in it."
@VinnieBoombatz374
@VinnieBoombatz374 5 лет назад
Correct, the Socialist take on this war was incorrect, even though they profited from it. The war was fought for astoundingly nationalistic reasons, and made no sense from an economic perspective. By 1914, all the great powers had divided up the globe into their own little profitable spheres of interest. If the war had not intervened, this lucrative state of affairs may have continued right to this very day. It seems the French envy and resentment of Germany, even though France itself had never been more prosperous, is to blame. I'm sure there's a lesson to be applied from this for the present day...Jealousy is probably the most deadly of the seven sins.
@anonymousweeble2224

All this talk of pride, jealousy, envy... sounds like a child's bedroom story, don't buy it. Profits is consistent with world history, and war is the destination of the economic system of capitalism.

No, you're quite right on that part. There was much opposition, understandably so as it became longer and more savage. But at the initial onset in 1914 the wave of nationalisim was at it's historical pinnicle with all the empire's at their peak.

I love when John Reed (Beatty's character) calmly replied : "Profit" to the question 'what would you say this war about?'. He technically just boiled down the nature of military-industrial complex in one simple-word..:D That's one of my favourite from this film. Anyway, i think this film is quite excellent although a bit (too) long..

Too bad those witnesses aren't individually identified. Some of the names of witnesses listed at the beginning include authors who I may have read (e.g. Will Durant and Henry Miller), but whom I do not recognize by appearance. I saw this movie in the early 1980s when it came out and when I was still in my early 20s. No way I'd recognize by appearance even those people whose names or works I am familiar with.

@Silverwire100 Will you give me a break? I glanced at your favorite films list. Very admirable, particularly for a kid your age. You need to live a little more, so as to learn to appreciate the interconnectedness of society, emotions and business. Don't forget that the great films you admire so much are the product of a capitalist system. Also remember that Beatty indoctrinated his crew so successfully with Red philosophy that they ended up striking, which almost derailed production of REDS

My favorite movie of all time. If you watch the whole movie and listen to the dialogue you will realize this is NOT a pro communist movie. There are subtle digs throughout the movie leading to major anti-communist dialogue toward the end. Warren Beatty ends up looking like a doofus running all over the world for no reason and Diane Keaton ends up looking like the only grown up. It IS a big love story.

Reed's widow, Louise Bryant, was able to come to terms with the unpleasant sides of life in Soviet Russia and even found warm words for the Red Terror. She claimed that it was objective circumstances that forced such sensitive people as Lenin and Dzerzhinsky to use it: “[Dzerzhinsky] had the duty to ensure that the prisoners were liquidated quickly and humanely. He carried out this grim task quickly and efficiently, for which even the convicts themselves were certainly grateful to him, because there is nothing more terrible than an executioner whose hands shake and his heart trembles.

Something other than stale romance flick platitudes, like Reed hitting his head on the chandelier all the time, and the dog trying to get in when they're making love. What has all of that to do with Bolshevism? If Eisenstein had lived long enough, just think of the movie he might've made from Reed's life!
