Reducing the burden of cholera around the world 

Cholera is a preventable and curable life-threatening intestinal disease caused by infection with toxigenic strains of the Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae). One of the most common ways people get infected is through the ingestion of water or food contaminated with V. cholerae.
Soung Iballa Francklin Brice is a Ph.D. canidate at the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions. Through his mentorship with Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI) member Afsar Ali, Ph.D., and his work done in EPI labs he aims to reduce the burden of cholera around the world. Through research collaboration with countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia, Francklin Brice aims to study the presence of toxigenic V. cholerae in water sources (agent component), poor access to safe water and inadequate hygiene and sanitation facilities (environmental component), and human susceptibility within the affected area (host component).
