Thought I'd try one of these videos out, looking at the main differences between Brian Jacques' novels and the TV series they inspired.

I did not discover the Redwall novels until about 21 years ago, when I was already approaching middle age; and did not know of the animated series until relatively recently. However, I appreciate these adaptations, and am willing to excuse their departures from the source. My only regret is that they did not continue the storyline beyond three seasons.

Since this is PBS where the showman broadcast, and seeing that this was aimed for older children, I can see why they made some of the changes from the original books, because this is PBS. There are limits to what can and cannot be shown on television, even though this is basically a cartoon show with anthropomorphic talking animals, just like Arthur, but it doesn’t have the same tone as Arthur. It’s much more serious. It’s more like Game of Thrones for Kids.

I grew up with the tv show, and have read the original Redwall book three times now. I love both, and while the tv show has its faults, I actually prefer the animated characterizations version of many of the characters (Cornflower and Mathias especially).

I love the tv adaptation of this series, but I’m always amazed how many fans of the books/show never bring up the amazing audiobook adaptations! Nearly the entire series was done with a full voice case with Jacques as the narrator and they’re all amazing!

the redwall cartoon series seems like something that was made more for the middle school age range, since that's around the time I actually got into the redwall book series.

Whenever I revisit the Redwall series, I can't help but get emotional. Redwall is home to some of my richest childhood memories, as no children's show resonated with me quite to the extent like this series did. The rather intricate plot (from a child's viewpoint at least), the well developed characters, the frightening villains (those being Cluny, Asmodeus, and Slagar), the episodes that ended in cliffhangers (leaving my 10 year old mind racing where I would be thinking about the show for the remainder of the evening), the suspense and trepidation I would feel as I watched story unfold in which the characters would inevitably find themselves in dangerous predicaments... all of that intermixed together packed quite a punch for a children's show and kept me fully engrossed and engaged throughout the entire series. The adventure of getting to watch this Redwall series through the lens of a 10 year old's eyes was one of the most memorable experiences of my childhood. Looking back now as a young professional, these fond memories bring a smile to my face and a few tears to my eyes. Thanks for the memories, Redwall. This show will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Your comments reflect my experience with the show perfectly. Despite some obvious flaws, I’ll always be grateful to this show for filling every summer of my childhood (which is when pbs would run this show) with stories of honor, bravery, and sacrifice. It wasn’t afraid to tackle very grown up themes, and was the only show i watched as a child that had the guts to kill off good characters as well as bad. Surprisingly even as a kid very few of my friends watched it, and as an adult it feels like no one knows what I’m talking about when I mention this series, book or tv. I was happy to see your comment, and know that this series was special to others too. :)

@@kmb6296 Hey friend! Reading your comment puts a smile on my face. You're exactly right... those mature element that were unique to a PBS children's show was exactly what made it so engrossing and captivating. Compared to all the other shows that would air on PBS in the early 2000s, this would be the only series I would categorize as a thriller for young kids which is why it left such a large footprint on my childhood. And I definitely feel ya when it comes to trying to find other who have seen it... I guess that we were just some of the lucky few that got to experience the world of Redwall as a child. :) As you may already know, Netflix announced last month that a new Redwall adaption is in the making, and I feel like a little kid again with the level of excitement that I have for it. That excitement may quickly turn to rage however if they screw this up. But for right now, I’m frivolously optimistic and can’t help but get my hopes up.

@@superdog1227 Me too :) plus I hope this new adaptation will bring a new generation of kids into it. I’m a bit nervous since reboot culture as a whole has been disappointing but I think the writer is fairly competent so fingers crossed 🤞

Is no one talking about how its implied that Matthias and Cornflower and Mattimao and Tess had sons at 14? Like who write that and decided it was okay???

I remember watching all the animated series on PBS when I was a teenager. It was pretty good. I wish they made more episodes though. Seriously, they should reboot the series, make it a CG animated series titled Redwall Abbey, (you know, like Downton Abbey) and make it more faithful to the original books, and make it a serialized story or a soap opera of sorts with these anthropomorphic talking animals and it would air on HBO.

Redwell was a great cartoon for my childhood I didn’t know there were books until I saw a few videos on the books so all my life I thought it was a great cartoon. I had to rewatch the series because at the time I only watched the first season of the series. I may have to read the books one day.

I May Not Remember This Because I Was So Young, But It Reminds Me Of Angelina Ballerina, And Plus It Comes From The Same Company Which Also Made Series Like The Berenstan Bears And Zobomafoo On PBS Which Is The Nelvana Studios Corporation!

Basil and Jess are Redwall’s version of Timon and Pumbaa from Lion King.
@LNER4771
@LNER4771 Год назад
I don't know. I'd think Basil is more like a combination of Zazu and Rafiki. Jess is somewhat of a mother figure to Matthias, along the lines of the other Pride lionesses.

So I guess Matthias is Simba, Martin the Warrior is akin to Mufasa, Cornflower is Nala, Cluny the Scourge is Scar. Which characters do you think is like Timon and Pumbaa?

4 a kids show they hold no punches when it comes 2 death scenes. But still 1 of my favorite shows nonetheless.

I’ve found the book series recently. So many older words that fit perfectly in my vocabulary, and many ways of saying things that you don’t often hear nowadays, which make it so very intriguing in my case. I started the series on Taggerung and have continued downward, plan on reading everything above Taggerung once I’m finished with the rest below it(in order Ofcourse). Didn’t even know there was an animated series, know what I’m going to binge watch after I finish the series now hahah!

YOUR FUN FACT: In the late 1990s, PBS reported that the book series was changed to a Canadian-produced, kid-friendly animated drama.

Can we just talk about the fact that the only line we get from winnifred in the first season is "ready Matthias". She saved his life and pretty much saved redwall in doing so.
