I've had my 405 for a little over four years and have worn them eleven plus hours a day. I'll admit, they took a long time to break-in. The first couple of years, I cleaned them with a damp cloth and then used the Red Wing silicone to reapply waterproofing. At the four year mark I began using mink oil to condition the outside. The sole has held up well. The stitching has held up along with the nylon eyelet that many thought would become a weak point. In conclusion, the 405s have been the most durable boot I've owned and would highly recommend them!
I have been doing landscape construction in these boots for the last 9 months in northwest Oregon. After 9 months these suckers are still waterPROOF! As long as you take care of them they'll take care of you. Best boots I've ever owned, and I've been in this trade for 20 years.
I use these in the aircraft industry and my soles have lasted about a year and a half to two years of nearly everyday use. I love these boots, I’ve worn them for 24 hours at a time and forgot they were on my feet. They can be hotter than your average boot because of their waterproof composition but it’s never been that big of an issue for me. So far I’d recommend these guys to anyone in the market for redwings. These feel like moon boots the first time you step into em. Super cushiony! They wear in perfectly too.
Had my moc toe 405 boots for about 1-1/2 years now and gotta say I love the look and they are getting more and more comfortable as we go. I wear these daily in a sheet metal shop although I work in mostly an office environment and are holding up nicely. They do take quite some time to break in to where I'd like them. Quality leather boot and would recommend. Hope my 2 cents helped you out
I've had my 405's for 2 1/2 years and wear them 11 hours a day in oil, rain and snow. No problem. Great boot, but takes time to break in. They are quite stiff.
I just got some of these and so far I love them. Wore them all day at Disneyland yesterday and was comfortable all day. I put some goldbond powder in there to keep my feet cool.
This boot only lasted me about 1 year before the sole started cracking and I couldn't rely on it for electrical safety. I also noticed that the sold gets incredibly hard when it's cold, and then it loses all grip, It's like wearing a hard hat on my feed if there's any snow on the ground. Because the soles are so hard and slippery, winter spikes don't stay on either. Besides that these boots are very comfortable and high quality, but I couldn't recommend them to anyone who works where it may be cold.
I've had these for about 8 months, wear them basically everyday. I really like them, they're built tough but they also have looks. Plus, to top it off you can get the safety toe like I got because I'm a welder.
I bought these because I worked in the glass industry, and whenever I would rest a 75lb piece of raw glass on my steel toe, it would cut through the material all the way down to the steel. The moc toe has lasted over a year with lots of encounters with glass. It’s all cut up and scratched, but they’ve molded to my foot so well and now they’re my favorite footwear.
Just got some of these today. Very high quality. I am truly a10.5. I tried on both the 10.5 and 10. The 10 is what fit my foot the best. Not sure if these come without a steel toe, but mine are steel toed. Not sure if that is what made the difference in size. Hands down by far this is the best fitting and most comfortable boot I have ever owned and I haven’t even broke them in let. Well worth the money.
Been using for a few months. They are really comfortable around the ankles. They basically made my foot pain go away and i can tell they are going last
I never get why I will move away from a well done product like this one because it that was made overseas. Best cars are Japanese, most comfortable clothing brands are from The US, Best fashions are Europeans, best steaks are from South America, best whiskey its from Scotland, there are great and crap products made over seas as well as here. Botton line, look at the product quality , regardless of where was made. These pair of boots are great, unfortunately when it comes down to $ for the group of people whom this boots are designed for (working class) it really sucks for us because if it was made in the US it would probably cost more for us to afford it doe to US labor regulations cost and that's why great American companies like this prefer to manufacture their products overseas to keep it affordable for us because these boots are not cheap to begin with. A person with a lot of money would prefer a shoe made in Italy or Germany with snake leather or something like that for price tag of $6k.
Exactly, the polypropylene webbing is a weak spot, had to have it replaced with a leather loop at a local cobbler about a year after I bought them. Other than that they are hands down the best boot I’ve ever owned.
I bought this boot as well as the Thorogood 814-4200. Boot Guy is right, I returned the Thorogood for a half size smaller. In comparison, the Red Wing is miles ahead in comfort and craftsmanship. It's easily the most comfortable boot I've ever worn. The 405 wedge sole feels like a memory foam mattress on your feet, it's awesome!! The Thorogood wedge sole is thinner, that's why it comes with a thick insole. I bought a second pair of 405's to rotate with the other 405. I'm keeping the Thorogoods for yard work and mucking around the house. I agree with Boot Guy that the webbing should've been an eyelet, hopefully Red Wing can fix this.
I've been wearing these almost every day for about 6 years. I don't find these to actually be as hot as you would expect them to feel. I live in San Antonio Texas, and work construction here where the summers can be brutal. Also, I run hot. I'm a good 30 lbs overweight and I'm always the first one to start sweating, Maybe it is the boot I am coming from (Wolverine Wellington wedge), but I find the liner does a good job of wicking with a good sock. I stick shoe trees in them at night and wipe them down every once in a while with Lexol leather cleaner, and they stay good looking for twice as long as any other boot I have ever worn. The comfort factor is out of this world. Do measure your foot at the Red Wing store. Most people wear a half size smaller Red wing than any other boot or shoe. It is critical the arch support is in the right place to really appreciate just how comfortable this boot is. I didn't know they weren't American made though. That sucks. Ask nicely for a discount, and most associates will hook you up.
Does Red Wing has a version with this style that isn't waterproof, or at least not as insulated so you can wear it in the summer? I like the look of this one more than all the heritage ones I've seen, but maybe I missed some.
Union ironworker here. I wear the 8in Nic toe none steel toes, Best boot I’ve ever bought! Great for the steel. Took about 2 weeks too break in fully but they take any abuse you throw at them, welding, abrasion, mud, wore them all summer and their not as bad as people think with them being insulated. Over all only boot I buy now. Lasted me 1-1/2 years. Starting too wear down. I have no regrets spending the extra money for these 235+$ boots. Note! Get the gel insoles! Must have!!
Now that's the feed back I like to see on this channel. Thank you. You are a shining example to all the other brothers out in the brotherhood. Be safe and keep building America.
I have worn these boots for about a year. I do outdoor Plumbing/waterworks and wanted a waterproof boot with a wedge sole. I found the waterproofing on the boot to be great, the only way water gets in is from over the top. Which is my only problem with these boots. The way the top is cut is not great for dirt work as it is easy for rocks and sand to get in. I would bet the 8" model would be better for that. I am trying out 8" Danner quarry wedge soles now. Will be gun to see how they compare. I am getting these bad boys resoled.
Awesome in depth video! I finally just bought my very first pair which were the #411 the 8 in. version! I sand hardwood floors for a living & prob end up walking 5+ miles a day so I figured the extra ankle support can’t hurt! So many guys in my industry wear Redwings so happy to be a part of the family!
I'm going to buy my second pair of these. I wore the first pair for two years nearly every day flatbed truck driving and stomping around Michigan. Very comfortable. An eyelet wore out and the sole and its tread wore out after a few more years of occasional wear.
I went back to redwing and ordered these. I went with the Irish setter version initially and while they are a great boot they don't give me with width in the toes I need. Irish setters come in a D width where these are available in the EE. If you have wide feet like I do skip the Irish setters and go for these. My only concern is that these are water proof which means they are going to be hot to wear in the summer time and may result in a slightly tighter fit overall. I'll comment back when they arrive and I've tried them.
Just bought myself a pair, breaking them in now. Not too bad, I did get the upgraded redwing insert based on my foot scan. It makes it a bit more comfortable for me atleast. Cant wait to see how these Hold up!
I bought these for when it rains, if you don’t mind having a pair of boots like this for the winter/rain? Then great! Go and buy the heritage red wings also for year round!
Boot guy I’m a site laborer in the commercial construction industry currently breaking in the red wing 9010 ... very nice looking boot however a tough break in so far ... what would be your best recommendation for a “New England” winter boot? Does not have to be steal/aluminum toe also what would you recommend for a summers boot? The 9010s are pretty heavy
I had mine resold after a year of concrete work no spitting or stitches coming apart. Since the mock toe is design or basically reinforcement for the one peice leather. Very waterproof. How to make better is give it the trac tred lite sole red wing. I've got the Trac lite boot it's lite but I think I'll see it coming apart before winter. Anyways I need the traction it is a cloud.
I work outside maintenance at a golf course, and this boot is awesome!!! Im in New Mexico so its hotter than the pit of hell, so not the coolest boot but what a work horse
i have owned 2 pairs of 405s they are absolutely the most comfortable boot i have ever owned right out of the box however the waterproofing does not last i am a exterior painter walking in mud a dewey grass and they both leaked i also climb on shingles and the soles grab wonderfully but wore out in 3 months i finally switched to the 606 red wing and the soles are still good after a year they are not waterproof but i just spray with silicone sealer and they took way longer to break in but the leather is definitely stronger
Thanks for your reviews, l was looking some boot like this 405, but in California the summer is like the hell. I'll try the 875 ones. Thanks again.! Of course thumbs up.
Hey guys. Be careful with this boot and make sure you get properly fitted. I was expecting to buy this boot but I have wide feet and it was not recommended as a good fit for me by Redwing shoe store specialist and owner. You may be able to squeeze into this in a d width, but if you're anything like me, and you are a double e width the shoe is not for you. I think it's a fantastic boot and I wish I could purchase it, but because of the width of my feet I cannot. I went with the double e in the Irish Setter wingshooter steel toe. What a fantastic boot and I hope that someday it gets reviewed here!
Love these boots they are so comfortable but the sole only lasts for around 8 months for me, walking on pavement/gravel all day. Currently looking at the Thorogood 3600. Which one would you recommend out of the two?
Thanks BG, but why don't you point us to a better pair if there is one out there? I'm a 6'7" 280 lb. Class A heavy construction carpenter and I am a tenderfoot with lower back problems and this is by far the best boot to have if you're walking on concrete all day. The drawback is it will wear down fast, my current pair lasted 8 weeks of walking miles as a safety carpenter on a half-acre mall expansion job-site. $100 to re-sole and well worth the money.
Great boot very comfortable soul wears out fast once it’s worn out it’s slippery as all hell cannot wear in the winter if there’s ice and snow if the soul is worn out a little your end up on your behind
So you say they’re going to be hot. Have you actually tried them? Have you worn them to see for yourself? I was hoping for a real review and not just guessing
I being noticing that the Sears diehard wedge sole boots are the longest lasting sole on the market. I wished the put that sole on some Red Wings or Thorogood boots. There on sale now for halve price..
I agree. I can't wear a diehard sole out. Reminds me of a Knapp Two-Shot life time sole. Use them for brakes on a motorcycle and they still won't wear.
I have the 8 inch boots they are my first pair of Wedge sole boots.Yes they are water proof but in constant wet climates calluses the later Welt to smell like a nasty wet tell.I took them camping it ran the Whole time we were there. They were never submerged in water but I did get theme wet and the constant humidity did not allow them to dry.I have owned Ariat boots never had this problem but I have to say they are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned. I will probably bye the water proof Thorogood 8 inch next time they have a plastic and later welt 👷🏼♂️
they look really nice, too bad its made in china and not in the USA. Thats why i'll always buy their heritage line. Still a fan of their craftsmanship. Do you think you can make a review of nicks/whites boots?
+Dan Sesh Powerlifter I agree 100% too bad. Dan what model of boot do you use for work? Send me a photo for my Instagram account. Thanks for the comment.
You think this boot would be good for a sub zero climate controlled freezer warehouse? My coworker swears by them. I currently have some thorogood moc toes and they’re fine for about 5 hours. The last 5 hours are miserable though and it’s just a single layer of leather but very high quality.
+Carl Hirner The box toe box on this #405 is nice. Guys also like the mild rocking motion to the fit. Haveing a toe box the spreads out helps to keep things in place.
@@jremeee2011 nothing really thought about resoleing them but was more cost effective to buy new ive sincr switched over to Thorogoods good boots the soles last about a year and a half for me but the 405s I still keep as my fancy boots
i have these boot but i want to know the best way to take care of these boots what kinda product should i use and all so are this dry tan leather boots or oiled please help me out spent lot of money want to take care of them
I just left a comment saying this. Irish setters mock toe rips on every pair I've ever seen. usually pretty quickly. the red wings will not rip open on you, but they take a lot of breaking in.
@@mattronimus really disappointed the rubber sole has started to seperate as well from the foam sole. Boots are ridiculously comfortable but durability is questionable
@@topdawgentlv7029 That is why I bought the Irish setter's. I tried them on and was shockingly surprised at how comfortable they were but they did not last long at all.
@@topdawgentlv7029 I bought a pair of 405 last week but had to take them back, because something was wrong with the left boot I got the 1222 model instead and they are extremely comfortable and light. can't report on the durability yet.
6 months in the 6'" and very happy with the boots! My first impression of the size 12 was, are these moon boots? Light weight for their size and quality construction, they do offer 14 hour day on your feet comfort that lasts all week!
Did you guys buy yours in store. I've been looking online but haven't had a lot of luck find them. Boot Guy do you carry these in stock to sell? please let me know where you guys purchased your pair or if know where I can order a pair please.
buddies at work have these and ive seen these boots get destroyed in 2 months. soles splitting in half , toe box rolling over the side of the sole etc. my irish setters still look great compared to theirs
Good boot that webbing you talked about breaks easily first thing to go on mine looking into Thorogood 814-3600 American/union made boot with what seems to be same price and way better quality
They are 100% not the same thing as the Irish setters... the Iris setter is a much thinner leather and the seam on the mock toe opens up on almost every pair I have seen. I do construction I had a pair, and the seam ripped open ... I know at least 3 guys at work right now who have the same problem. From what I've seen the red wings will not open.
That all depends on your station in Life currently. Are you at one with yourself? are you ready to wear animal products on your feet? do you enjoy a nice beautiful porterhouse steak?
Bought this boot a year ago. Its very comfortable once I broke it in. But I didnt know it was made in china. Im new to redwings and thought all redwings where made in the usa. I think its shitty I paid 230 dllrs for a boot made in china. And here I was recomending these boots to everyone.. Not no more.
Have had them for 2 months. They are uncomfortable. The insole is garbage for the price you pay and the moldable orthotics RW sells fixes that. Everything else is awesome! Very sturdy boots..
So, here is what the guys who write rules on safety have to say about this boot being EH. " Electrical Hazard (EH) footwear is manufactured with non-conductive, electrical shock-resistant soles and heels. The outsole can provide a secondary electrical shock resistance protection to the wearer against the hazards from an incidental contact with energized electrical circuits or parts. Testing ensures the materials are capable of withstanding 14,000 v at 60 Hz for one minute with no current flow or leakage current in excess of 3.0 mA, under dry conditions. (This is not usually acceptable for wet service or higher voltages.). ASTM 2413 cites ASTM F1117 for dielectric shoes."
