It's is not that much more expensive, reference Avia, their retros are under $100 and all made with genuine leather

I've got this one fake leather coat that somehow ages and creases gracefully, but that's the only example I've ever had and it's too flexible + thin for most shoe parts. I wish they'd just develop something as elegant and practical as real leather that can be used on toeboxes etc. without decreasing the value vs. cost so much, ideally it'd age even better too. Cause while it can be substantially cheaper to produce (Especially if they're not even good synthetics), even if they'd pass those savings onto us, we're still losing with how much sooner the shoes bite the dust. The road to the day they're finally done is also a lot less pretty and comfy. I'd also dig more experimental stuff... You know how some shoes have a rubbery cap at the toe? Stuff like that could be a lot better of a way to decrease costs. Think of the Adidas Forum 84's construction too, and how it has the nylon transition between toebox and tongue that takes stress off the leather. Imo if they wanna cut costs, do it on designs that make the best of it only, and stop cheaping out on this one aspect of the shoe that gets ruined before everything else, effectively ruining the rest too, what a waste. If you can get cheaper materials in places where they don't bother us to age at the same pace as better materials in more important parts, that's efficient.

@@kicksreason don't be deceived by the $100 sticker price of Avia.( Avia is probably ( balancing the range ) producing that shoe at a bit of a loss, think about it if you're a factory and you're making (ball park numbers) 100,000 pairs at $20 then you can make 1000 at $50 and theoretically balance out the loss by producing a 3rd shoe that is even more economical. these economical shoes I think of as "bread and butter" because you get huge orders all the time and they're so big that the profit from those orders will fund your $50 stile ) I worked for a factory that made nothing but all leather shoes they made school shoes , work boots , men's fashion , women's fashion , sandals any sort of semi traditional basic leather shoe we made it and when you average all the pricing out back then my boss has told me typical leather Derby costs about $20 and he would have been talking Australian dollars back in the 90s. A few months ago when I was tooling up I purchased some lining material I can't remember the exact cost but for about $30 I got about 5 or 7 square metres of material. In contrast I spent way over $600.00 on leather and probably have a little over two metres square. The cost disparity between the two materials is astonishing and the labor is way more than double to cut leather as opposed to textiles. I've literally done both of these jobs in the factory, clicking I was not particularly faster but I remember struggling to finish 500 pair orders out of leather and it taking like almost a week. Contrast that when I would cut lining or as we call it in the factory stuff cutting and yeah they call it stuff because you cut everything else all the 'stuff' that's not leather.... heel counters, insole boards, lining, sponge, reinforcement pieces, anything that they're shoe requires that needs cutting that's not leather. we hade what's called a travelling head press which is a huge hydraulic press it has a cutting board about 6 times as big as a clicking press and I used to roll out entire bolts of Cumbria lining folding it so that One Cup would be 5 pairs I think it was the maximum I'd ever cut in one stoke and I could literally pump out a 10,000 pear orders in a single day, so please trust me there's a vast world of difference between working with leather and working with textiles :)
