Bothe the male and female reed bunting have white outer tail feathers that show well when they are in flight. Intermittently they have a distinctive habit of flicking their tails; it’s really more a spreading or the tail for a fraction of a second resulting in a quick flash of white. Why they do this uncertain, it’s suggested that it may be a nervous flick or a form of communication.
