Reef tanks, corals and fish on their own for a year. No reef maintenance, no water changes.

How hard is it to keep a reef tank? Are corals easy? This reef tank, including saltwater fish, corals and shrimp have been on their own for about a year. Been so busy with family and life. At one point I was going to take it down but I've been reefing for over 25 years. I learned about no water changed about 10 years ago. Made the tank a lot more stable. Rose Bubble Tip Anemone has multiplied. The tangs all hung in there along with the Maroon clown fishes. Once a reef tank gets stabilized, they become very self sufficient, especially with a deep sand bed and lots of live rock. I only use a skimmer for export. I use the China LED lights as well. I've had them for about 5 years.

I believe your aquarium was extremely balanced and everything was heathy before the neglect but this is proof that once balanced your aquarium really is a ecosystem in a glass box and should be treated like such not a fish tank or coral tank that requires ro water and a buckload of chemicals and supplements....🤷‍♂️ Great job beautiful aquarium

You can get this same affect by removing g your snails, cranking up your lights for 3 weeks then return your snails and say , look, it's been a year! Then with poor acting, act surprised as how your tank looks. Anyone with half a brain cell know that corals poop, what dose he have in the tank that's eating the corals waste?

But I've built up years of micro organisms and sponges in my tank that consume the nitrates and small particles before they become nitrates. After a long time tanks will balance and the bacteria will grow to accommodate the bio load if the change is slow enough not to crash a tank. I certainly don't know everything but I've seen tanks for well with constant water changes and seem them do well without it.

This is the first time seeing your reef tank stuff on YT. We are similar when it comes to reef tanks. I started our tanks back in 1994 and did really well until El nino of 96 came and we were with out power for 18 days. This changed the way we thought about the tanks, water changes, equipment , food and supplements. Once we got it back up and running all we had to do is add fresh water and liquid food to our storage tank and it gravity feed the system daily as the water evaporated. I haven't had the 150g tank up in running in a long time but have kept some live rook in my 50g tank alive for the last 6 years. I am going to do a RU-vid reveal with a goal of 10K subscribers and do a budget friendly build. I use to travel to Bakersfield to buy my corals back then. There use to be a RC shop and reef tank store I think off of Ming.

My tank has not had a change now in nearly two years. I have a top off I add water to when it’s low, change out the skimmer once in a while and feed rarely. I do have a dosing unit, and lights on a timer ramping up and down. We create ecosystems and this is a sign it’s working, hobbyists like to think their aesthetics of a healthy tank is best, and attempts to achieve faster than normal results should be done and used. The tank looks great, things grow things die and it all takes time. Stability in all your parameters is better than chasing ‘perfect’ numbers

Good thing you have pretty much all softies in that tank, but yeah I hear you about the motivation coming and going. I’ve been reefing for about 15yrs and it comes and goes, I’ll get bit by the bug and really start putting effort into my reef and then months later I’ll leave it alone for months without doing anything (I also have really hardy corals, fish and dosers). I’ve found a happy medium where I can do water changes without turning anything off so it makes it way easier which in this hobby equates to better maintenance the less involved it is.

Have since scaled back to just water changes and the tank is basically the same. I think that stuff helped when the tank was newer but now that it is established worrying about pests is much less of a worry.

Awesome tank and great job! I am planning on my first biocube 32g early next year and was wondering if it is possible to do away with maintenance for even just at least 30 days if the tank's parameters are all stable? I've been in the reef owners group and they all said that it cannot be done. This is if I go on vacation. Any tips?

I'm in the same position I'm to busy with school to bother with it especially when I had a parasite kill all my fish so now I'm letting it sit and be on its own. My biggest question is did you dose calc alk or mag?

That texture of the algae is due to the star fish. I can see them in my tank and i don't own a tang.

You have incredible live rock... Was it actually premium from an ocean or artificial dry? Thanks.

Maybe add a sea grass in the background, would add some wavey action to the tank and would eat up that algae

he didn't clean his glass form 2 months, shot a video just saying its been a year on its own when it hasnt, but some people like me that have more that 1 saltwater tank know better than this, he click bated you on the fact of you not having any knowledge of how a saltwater tank operates. trust me, when i say everything he has would die in 6 months, it would. you have to clean the waste up or it turn into ammonia, then changes to no2 then no3 witch is deadly for anything in water at high levels.

I don’t buy the 1 year timeline. The glass would be covered in coralline not simply green algae
@gritter781
@gritter781 3 года назад
No it wouldn't. I guarantee that his calcium and alkalinity levels are extremely low. Which is why he only has the hardiest of corals (aside from the 95% dead monti) still living, and very little coralline.

Soft corals are invincible as long as parameters are in a certain range.

@@pingu8666 yeah.... if you suck at reef keeping.... if you cannot keep soft corals alive then you must abandon this hobby these aren't just mice in a cage they are sensitive complex organisms that require a sensitive complex hobbyist as a caretaker.

Some think its cruel but understand that changes like this happen in the wild constantly not just due to human activity. This experiment could actually help ecosystems learn to better survive and evolve into much hardier/efficient forms of life. What I didn't like is how quickly he simulated bringing them back into a more stable environment. That almost never happens that fast in the wild and kinda botches what would otherwise be a good experiment (in my opinion). 1 year of neglect and 1 year to slowly recover would be interesting to see.

I can’t help but think our coral reefs are being destroyed so they can be sold and put in a small tank. Imagine the number of fish that could have used this reef as shelter, but hey, this guy has it for his own satisfaction.

After i left my wife my small 60liter aquarium stayed with her but she didn't do anything at all with it. The aquarium didn't have light, heater, filtration, food or clean water in over 1 year. But some fish and shrimp stayed alive. No idea how. But i guess less is more
