It's still worth every penny spent..!!!! yard is looking amazing!!! I'd love to see you sharply roll a golf ball across the lawn.. that ball would roll forever!!!
Really like your channel. I follow many in the lawn care community, and what i like about your style is the brevity. You are able to squeeze in SO MUCH information in a relatively short period of time. So many of the others drag on and on and those of us that follow several folks appreciate the valuable information in a reasonable amount of time. For that Sir, you are the King. Seriously, your style and format is at the top for sure. Well done on all your stuff.... Man, I really wish you were a cool season guy for sure !!!! For cool season, I really like Ryan Knorr's stuff. He has a similar no BS style.
Really appreciate the kind words Don F. People don't have long attention spans so recently I've been working on getting the information across as quickly as I can in a way that's fun to watch. Probably not the best way to grow on RU-vid but the viewers seem to prefer it. It's the kind of content I prefer to watch which is why I do it. Thanks so much for watching. I really appreciate the support.
No problem at all Michael. I wanted to share what they can cost to fix when damaged. It could have been much higher. Just something to keep in mind when you goto a greensmower. Thanks for watching.
What you have there is basically a walking greens mower. With an 11 blade reel and the proper bedknife it will cut extreamly low. We cut our greens at .175 inch and go up to .20 when the heat comes up. That's for our course greens. We are a public course but country clubs will ofyen mow lower than that. Of course cutting that low requires a lot of turf maintenance, chemicals, and fertilizer not to mention daily watering. These are amazing machines and the quality of cut blows away any rotary blade mower. You are cutting at the height we cut our Ts and fairways. The big difference between this mower and the average homeowners rotary lawn mower is your mower cuts grass with precision and actually cuts it like scissors where a rotary mower actually chops the grass blades like a cleaver or sickle. That's why your lawn looks so amazing. One important thing to do is always inspect your lawn for objects that can damage the reel or bedknife. Anything like coins or small rocks or a lost key can cause damage. I've had my crew guys hit just about everything in 25 + years. I've done my share of repairs and rebulds over the years. Love seeing someone take pride in their yard that. You would no doubt make a good golf course assistant superintendent or head superintendent.
Yo!!! I’ve been work on my lawn and This Brother is here Showing Off His PERFECT LAWN… But that does look or IS an incredible Machine, Incredible Job, 🦁🦁👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Heya Ayo030s. Hopefully I'm not coming across as showing off. 😁 Since I showed you guys the damage, I figured you'd also want to see what it cost to fix. Appreciate you watching man. Thanks for the support.
It’s definitely not cheap. But again, regardless of what you’re able to find one for, these are expensive units when brand new. So the price for replacement parts reflects that. Nothing cuts like one though. Thanks for watching Mark.
Tanks bredren. 😎 I'm really happy to have it back. I wasn't happy about damaging but there ended up being a silver lining after all. Appreciate you watching sir.
Be careful what you wish for Steven. It takes a crazy amount of time and commitment. I do agree that it looks pretty awesome though. Thanks for watching the content.
Your lawn is amazing. I’m so glad I don’t live next to you. Not because of you, I would be embarrassed by the lawn. It’s looking super sharp. #inspiration!
Thanks so much Papa Mows Low. I really appreciate it. I'm glad how the lawn is progressing. All the work over the years is really starting to pay off. Thanks for watching the content. Great job on the livestream last night. 🙏😎
I was kinda gritting my teeth as you started going over the bill. And was surprised it wasn’t more!! Not that the bill isn’t a lot but given the new prices for these mowers I don’t think it was awful-especially for the upgrade!
I'm shocked! I thought it would have been considerably higher! My Mclane for a new 20" 7 blade (not 11) is $550 and 20" bed knife $150 for parts alone - no labor, oil, bearings, belt, adjustment, etc. I also fully understand that the Toro is a much better machine. Wow! Your shop is excellent.
Yeah Toro parts aren't cheap but they're not obscenely expensive either. A reel isn't anywhere hear $550. They do excellent work. Highly recommend Jerry Pate Company. Ask for Joey.
Lol that ending! You know man, that’s not all that bad considering a new reel for a crappy mclane is more then 500 bucks! Plus that new reel looks cool, what kind of metal is that??
It's whatever Toro is using these days. They called it their EdgeSeries that's supposed to have better geometry and be harder. All I know it cuts really, really, good. I'm in love.
Thanks Richard. The 11 blade has me falling in love with mowing all over again. I mowed this morning but as I look at the lawn I see a few stragglers out there I may need to go take care of. Thanks so much for watching sir. 🙏😎
@@RonHenry this is the reason I went with 8 Blade. first year cutting and starting at 3/4 so I felt 8 blade would leave less stragglers . Time will tell as it is still a little early in NC but temp is 88 today
@@soupy01833 For year one, 8 blade is definitely the wait to go. With an 11 blade, I'm pretty much locked into the mowing heights below .75. Thanks for watching sir.
Now you have to store that REEL MOWER in a separate GARAGE of its own!!! 🤣😅😅 Another point... I thought I was ADDICTED TO MOWING...well you got me beat!!! 😅😅🤣🤣
Best moral of the story ending in a grass series goes to....😂😂😂 Great video. You gotta pay to play though. Yard looks great to be so early in the season. Keep pumping out the content bro!
That repair cost is actually not bad. My reel alone cost $800 if I were to need a replacement. One of the reasons Toro tend to be very popular. Repairs are readily available and parts are plentiful. Great to see you getting your Mercedes back. Lawn is looking phenomenal btw. Mine however looks like shyt. Sniff sniff
Thanks so much Frankie. I'm glad to have it back. I wouldn't have thought an 11 blade reel change would have made that much of a difference. Definitely happy with where the lawn is going. You're a bit north of me so your lawn is going to take off soon. We just need to keep the cold snaps away.. Thanks again for watching sir. I'll be sure to tag you when I overseed. 😂👍
@@RonHenry hehehe. I love my 11 blade. But I need to level the lawn to take full advantage of it. I’m having to raise my HOC to about .450 right now cause it’s so bumpy.
Hi Ocean. Start slow and mow a bit higher (.75 - 1") to start. Here's a training video from Toro that has tons of useful info in it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-opyLdt0XDFg.html I would watching that to start so that you're operating it safely. Always feel free to reach out to me if I can help with anything. I also have a review of the GM that you might find useful too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_kKhWPlStW0.html
Hi JP. I didn't ask for it. They might still have it. It wasn't worth fixing once you factored in labor and how much they'd have to grind to get it to round again. Thanks for watching sir.
@@RonHenry Yeah it sucks, I thought it was going to be a lot worse though. Maybe we can have a buy you a coffee at the next live stream to help pay for it.
Can you link to documentation from Toro recommending an 11 blade for .25 - .75 HOC? I thought their recommendation is for HOC = Clip Rate for ideal cut. Clip rate for the 11 blade is .17”
Here you go Eric. Around the middle of the page. www.toroadvantage.com/reel-mowers/fine-tune-fairways-tips/#:~:text=500%20inches%20(12.7%20mm)%2C%20and%20an%2011%2Dblade,mow%20speed%20as%20a%20guide My mow speed is high. I run the mower fully turned up. Thanks for watching. 👍😎
Good news is if you can stay away from concrete that reel and bearing job should last for another 500 hours of service. For a homeowner that could be 10+ years.
Oh I give that concrete all kinds of side eye every time I go past it now Kris. I do love the way the mower is cutting now. Toro builds amazing hardware.
@@RonHenry that’s awesome the 11 EdgeMax is jamming for ya at your HOC sub .50. The 8 EdgeMax they put on mine definitely cut better than the old design and still that was an sweet cut. BTW which bedknife did you go with? Was it the standard steel low cut, fairway, or high cut? Or did you pop for the $110 EdgeMax steel bed knife too?
Hi Ron, I just got a Jacobsen 526a and was cutting around my sidewalks and was very nervous about how close I could get. When I use my rotary mower I just go straight from the grass over the sidewalk with no worry. When I mowed the first time with the greens mower I was not sure how it would handle going from grass to concrete. I am very curious to see how you mow around your sidewalks and other hard surfaces to avoid damage. My hoc on the mower is set to 1” since it was set up as a tee mower the hoc is around ½” to 1 ¼” so I’m not going very low but low enough to have me concerned
Hi Tyler. It's not an issue when the sidewalk or driveway is BELOW the grass. It's when it's above that you need to be careful. I literally let my mower hang off an inch of 2 for the sidewalk and patio areas. In both those cases the grass is below the concrete. Does that make sense? If not I can film a short video showing you what I mean. Thanks for watching sir. I appreciate the support.
@@RonHenry hi Ron, thank you for the response! A video about using a greens mower and what to pay attention to that a lot of people might now know about such as how to cut around concrete, how clean does your yard have to actually be to reel mow. I had way more little pieces of mulch and sticks that I had no clue where there until I really scanned every inch with a rake. I see a lot of videos that include the greens mowers or give reviews on mowers but not really what to expect and how to make sure that your yard is fully prepared for it once you actually own one I actually bent my bed knife already because I had a tree root from a tree I removed last year that I didn’t know existed until I mowed this low.
I got mine from Prarie Turf equipment in Manitoba. prairieturfequipment.com I’d also reach out to Jerry Pate Company and ask them which pre-owned mowers they have in stock. They’re a Toro dealer so any mower you get from them will be freshened up with genuine parts.
With the 11 blade, it’s not really a height thing. The bedknife geometry has waaay more effect on cut quality at any given height. But the blade count does affect how big a bite the reel can take before it starts pushing grass forward and underneath the knife. You’ll have to mow very frequently (more videos? 😆) to manage your clipping volume. If it gets “overgrown” you’ll notice it will leave more stragglers than the 8 blade did. Cancel that vacation! 😰
Nothing wrong with that King Chile. The most important thing is to mow frequently regardless of what you're mowing with. Thanks for watching the content sir.
Hi Andy. If it's ready to go an in good shape it's not bad. All depends on the conditions of the mower. 2100 hours isn't a spring chicken but if it's been recently freshened up (new belts, bedknife, reel, etc) could be a winner.
Can you please tell me somewhere trustworthy down there to buy a used one? I've gone all in with killing off entire lawn and fall seeding, I don't really have any other option than a good used one.
Hi Ron! Love your channel! Was there anything that lead you in the direction of the GM1600 vs 2120 Flex or others? I’ve come across a 2004 GM1600 for $2200. Seems high for its age, but it is supposed to be in ready condition with fresh service, sharpening, oil, air filter…. I’m in Little Rock where the demand is low. Just want to get it at the right price in case It’s not for me. Your thoughts? Keep up the good work! Looking great!
Price and availability Charles. When I was shopping for a GM, the 2120 wasn't easy to find pre-owned. That's why I opted for the 1600. $2200 is a bit high for a 2004 model. I suppose it depends on condition. Mine was $3500 for a 2014 with 200ish hours on it. So you can use that as a guage on how much to pay. It's an awesome mower though. You won't regret picking one up. Let me know if you need anything else.
@@RonHenry thank you for the content! Bought my last year with worst lawn ever, but putting in the work and time to get my bermuda looking as good as yours!
@@makoavincent8396 no problem at all Makoa. Thank You for watching the content. I appreciate the support. I’m sure your lawn is already turning around. Let me know if I can help with anything.
Definitely a costly mistake. My neighbor once hit a manhole cover that was elevated a bit in his yard with his ride on mower and did some nasty and expensive damage to his mower.
Yep it wasn't cheap David. But the best way to improve a bad situation? Upgrade time! I can't imagine what a manhole cover would do to a mower. Makes me cringe thinking about it. Thanks for watching.
Soooooooooo, i bought a new 8 blade reel, took 8 months to do the project, enlisting the help of a couple people along the way, finally got it going with my paspalum coming out of dormancy in SoCal, aaaaaand, smashed some concrete on my first use. broke the reel with 10 mins use on it and I want to kill myself right now. wish i had a guy close by that could help.
@@RonHenry there aren’t large amounts of walk behind greens mowers available as most courses use triflex ride on type greens mowers. There’s a few 1000’s come onto the market occasionally but 1600’s are super rare.
@@RonHenry they still use genuine toro parts that are sent out from the US so there’s the extra cost of transport plus exchange rate. Reel mowing is a premium option for a homeowner in Aus.
@@australianlawnfanatics3535 I gotcha. It's fairly premium here too but there there are a lot of options for reel mowers. New ones can be had for relatively reasonable prices compared to greensmowers. I imagine if you do have one, you need to be extremely careful with it. Thanks for filling me in on what you guys are going through down under.
