Reel Mowing My Putting Green

This is a relaxing video of me mowing my new putting green. The green is still under construction, but I thought I would document the progress. This is a real Bermuda Grass putting green that I mow with a John Deere 180B reel mower. I mow roughly every other day. The green is just over 8 weeks old as of the first week of June 2020. Just the sound alone of that #onetugger makes me want to go cut my green...even tho I just finished lol 😂 but I have to be gentle as I just over seeded last Friday 🤷🏼‍♂️

ReelBob Shady I don’t have that option with fresh seed down, I even scalped my green on purpose just to slow the growth so the seed has a chance to catch up

People that have trouble falling asleep play audio of the ocean, rivers, forest, etc. This is way more soothing.

Really appreciate the work youve put into this. Not just the green but also all of the video editing for the rest of us to enjoy. I do have a question, do you expect your green to get firmer and faster over time? Or is this just the difference between consumer and commercial lawn equipment? In other words, what would it actually take to build a country club level putting green in ones backyard? Thanks again for the videos I really enjoyed all of them. 👍🏻

Sorry took so long to reply. Yes I do expect the green to improve over time. The more seasons the green gets under it’s belt the better it will look and play. You can have a very nice natural putting green without overly expensive stuff. The only real necessity is a greens grade reel mower. But, a McClain can get you close enough. Just look for good used equipment on online forums like facebook market place, etc. you can get amazing deals on good condition gems.

I was wondering what types of fertilizer I could buy to build my green that I could find at my local Home Depot or Lowe’s?

You can still do a good job with just about any fertilizer on the market. What you see with the new ferts coming out (PGF, ProPeat, etc) is the addatives being included in the bag that everyone likes over and beyond NPK. In terms of what you can pick up at your box store for this time of year (Middle of the summer) I would focus on lower content N (10% and below) fertilizers. You can apply these more frequently to spoon feed a putting green without totally burning them out. I would also try to get an organic fertilizer as this too will help minimize burn damage. Milorganite is one that a lot of focus promote. But each box store has their own version of a Milo substitute if they are out.
