Thr reel mower has a much better quality of cut. You can prove this to yourself by examinining individual stalks of grass with magnification. Reel cut grass should have a sheared blade of grass with the blade having an even, green end. A rotary cut blade of grass will be fractured on the cut end and it will be brownish after cutting. The ovrall result will be a darker, more dense lawn with a reel mower, the grass being healthier and less stressed.
Expensive? I guess he's talking about a powered reel mower, not a push reel mower. Brand new, you can get a push reel mower for about the same or less than a rotary power mower. Or you can get lucky like I did. My first was a curbside pickup, an old Ward's reel mower--zero dollars. It lasted a few years before it became unfixable for me. I've just replaced it with a newer Great States reel mower from a yard sale for $15. Yes, it takes a bit more effort to push a reel mower around, especially if the grass starts getting too high, so you have to mow more frequently to stay on top of it. But obviously, there's no gasoline, no noise, no carbon emissions (except from your own breath!). Every thing has its advantages and disadvantages, and it's up to you to decide which side is greater for you. I got into reel mowing because I'm really CHEAP, and kept going because I needed the exercise! ;-)
I've never looked forward to the end of your videos because it is the end I didn't want them to end! Now I look forward to the end but still don't want them to end lol !!!
Just researching reel mowing. But I do have St Augustine. I cut at 4 to 5 inches because that is best height for this type of grass. Is reel mowers out for me ?
Chuck. Thanks for the differing opinions on the reel mower and thanks for all who collaborated with Chuck! I have loved all of the content that you have put out and glad that you're extending the invite for prayer requests! We all need prayer. God bless you and your family!
Not reel mowing for me. I have tall fescue. There is another you tube channel that I watch Mr Ferguson lawn care he too started a mid week quickie where he has testimony and prayer you should check him out.
Chuck…love the channel. I’ve been following you since the beginning and have really enjoyed your content. Please please please keep it up. Love the prayer and you are an inspiration to a lot to us! Great work!
I enjoy listening to music in my ears while I reel. I am just not sure if I should buy 16 or 18 inch. It's a tough decision. I bought a 14 inch and counted my steps and it's the same as my 21 inch MTD gas mower. I think this guy is just out of shape. After the 3rd time, you will get comfortable with it. I have fescue, I like it and only cut once a week. Seriously, I think this young man is out of shape.
I had a longer comment but it's pointless, and yes, at the time I was 30 pounds heavier, but that had nothing to do with my enjoyment or lack there of. I'd like to see people mow 4,000 square feet up hill, or along the hill, uneven (at the time), and tell me it's an enjoyable mow. When people have a level, flat lawn, reel mowing is easy. Anyway, that doesn't matter. I'm fine with people calling me out. Thanks for watching.
You may have the worst yard to reel mow I’ve ever seen. That may be why you don’t like it so much. Inclines, slants, divits, dirt spots etc. I mow my yard every Saturday during the mowing season. I only have to mow it once. I think you made a great video, well done.
You're absolutely right about my yard. When I had more time, it wasn't too bad... a really good workout. The inclines and what not make the experience a lot more challenging for sure.
I didn't realize I just joined a hipster cult. I'm replacing my ortho classic cut with an earthwise 16" 7 blade manual real mower to take my perennial ryegrass lawn past 1.5". Is this the equivalent of "singles" bikes?
The struggle is real. Somedays I wish I had a pit crew for the mower, not to mention the need to cut my 14k sq ft 2-3x a week. I thought PGR would be my saving grace but that just introduced more complexity. Never needed to verticut until PGR.
Great topics! Thanks for sharing the different viewpoints on reel mowing. Time and cost are the two main reasons I don't reel mow my Bermuda. I do plan to invest in a new machine in the future and have debated on getting one. Right now I am leaning towards a lawn tractor instead. That could change. Thank you for sharing your views and God bless!
@@DaddingAllDay Maybe next year time will tell. Grew up cutting Bermuda with one but they can scalp the heck out of it. My number one reason for wanting one happens in the fall and that is leaves! For about the same cost a reel mower is not gonna help me clear massive amounts of leaves that I deal with. Just not practical. I still want one eventually but not as my primary machine.
Chuck is there a riding mower you recommend that will give you a HOC close to reel mowing? I’m running the 25inch McLane on 12,000 sq ft and it’s consuming all my time!
More time, meaning I need to mow more often with the reel mower. If I let the grass get too long, the reel mower doesn't do well. You get more forgiveness with the rotary. With my new job, there's no way I can mow every 2-3 days. Sorry for not making that clearer in the video. Thanks for watching.
That’s why you hate reel mowing. If you would truly level your lawn, overseed or even water more I bet it would look better. Winter is here tho and my grass is still super green
@@NewsNowLIVE1 You shouldn't overseed bermuda. Bermuda seed is trash. My lawn is perfectly fine, I scalped because it had been too long since I last reel mowed. So I had to mow twice, once with the rotary and again with the reel. Reel mowing, as I said in the video, takes more time and commitment, than I'm able to give it. This is my second season transitioning from a fescue sod that the previous owners had to bermuda. Thanks for watching and commenting. See my later videos to see how the lawn turned out.
Thanks for sharing your faith! I too am a Christian, though I don’t share it in my content. I believe in the power of prayer too and am happy to find another believer 😀
That's awesome sir! I debated for a while how to incorporate my faith in my videos, which led to "God bless" at the end. While that's probably enough, I feel I could do more.
Just get a push reel mower and get some exercise while mowing. If you're getting an engine you might as well get a rotary. You look like you could stand to lose a few pounds
The ending allowed me like and subscribe. Christ needs his believers to speak up and speak out about the church no matter what. All praise to the Lord Jesus!
Thank you for sharing your faith with your audience and being a good example of Christian witnessing. It's not an easy thing to do, but if even one viewer finds comfort or encouragement by it, then it was all worth it. Looking forward to more incredible content, Chuck. God bless.
You should keep that to yourself. If you want to talk about your beliefs start a holy rollers channel. People come to watch lawn care not religion. Best of luck to you in the future.
@Tim Jackson he said he will put pray at the end. Just listen (if you want) to the lawn content and stop when the lawn content is done. We all need prayer including you. Peace, love and God bless you.
In Summary - Here are the reasons you don't like Reel Mowing. 1. You are cheap. 2. You are lazy {Health Tip - You might live longer if you get a push reel mower for that back yard) 3. you don't want to invest time in your lawn.
Chuck - By the way I am also A daddy lawn guy and yep - I need the workout which is why I got a push reel mower for about 1000 sq ft in the yard. I mow it every other day and it is helping the belly go away. People laugh when I show them a pic of my new $85 mower!
