It's called the REEL Pota-ble antenna. It is an EFHW that has the potential to work on many bands. During this video, I was running 100w SSB. This is the information I could find on it:
"THE REEL POTA-ble EFHW Antenna is a truly unique, and versatile portable antenna. Designed for quick and easy deployment with portable operators in mind. The antenna is light, and compact, easy to fit in most Go Bags. It features a 49:1 transformer built in to a reel box. The round spool keeps the flexible silicone 20 ga wire from kinking, and provides smooth deployment and retraction. One of the unique features of the Reel POTA-ble antenna is the integrated active connection between the transformer and the radiating element. This allows for fine tuning, unlike some traditional EFHW antennas with fixed length wire. An example is our antenna is pre-tuned for the lower end of 40 meters, and with 12 cranks of the handle it's now resonant at the top of the band. Please see SWR plots pictures and Video. With the wire fully extended 20, 15, 10 meters are ready to go, no tuner required. The Antenna is rated for 100 watts SSB, and 50 CW, and 30 watts FT8, or other Digital modes. The antenna comes with a convenient Stainless Steel loop. and S-Biner for easy attachments in the field. This is a great POTA, SOTA or Field Day, antenna. "

I did want to mention, that cooler is the story of people I meet, places I go and experiences I have. If we've met, if we've had some kind of connection, send me a sticker and I'll gladly send you one back. Maybe you'll see the sticker on the cooler.

This thing is GREAT! I saw a review of this antenna a few months ago but I was too late ordering it. When I that it was available again I quickly grabbed it. Yesterday I tried some vertical wire antennas with different permutations of 4:1, and 9:1 ununs, baluns, counterpoise, and radials all with rather high SWRs. Remembering that I also had this in my collection, I taped one end to an 18 foot telescopic pole, reeled out the line until it stopped and hung the transformer about 5 feet high. I was also trying to get acquainted with a new radio, so I watched a tutorial on my phone and started receiving signals. Stations in Puerto Rico and Arizona, were easily heard: around 1700 miles from me. I tuned up on 20 meters and checked in to a net. My longest contact was in Panama 1900 miles away. I was heard using 40 and 70 watts. Not bad for an 18 foot sloper.

I have built 2 variants of these with the exact same chalk line spool! One with bare wire and one with silicone coated wire. Both have their challenges and advantages. I don’t have my transformer attached though so it’s not as fuss free as his. Looks like a great product he has. I like to DIY but for someone who likes a simple EFHW solution that’s a pretty solid looking setup he has there
@Kinetic79
@Kinetic79 Год назад
Would be cool if you elaborated :) i think the uncoated is electrically superior-primarily if it’s at the unun end… as spooling at the far end is generally fairly blind to the RF regardless of coating. but i assume that the uncoated is less flexible and tangles or kinks more easily for you, right?
@1979Iceman
@1979Iceman Год назад
@@Kinetic79 ok where to begin. Well, I’ve not had any problems with tangling. I will work up a better more detailed response, just wanted to get back to you so you know I wasn’t ignoring you.
@1979Iceman
@1979Iceman Год назад
@@Kinetic79 the first one I made was from 100 feet of stainless steel picture hanging wire at about 1.5mm diameter (multi stranded). My favorite but can cause a rats nest if you let go of the handle but avoidable. My second one was made with 45 pound test copper trolling wire. Doesn’t have the same problem as the SS wire. I’ve had no issues winding and unwinding the copper one. More to come…
@1979Iceman
@1979Iceman Год назад
@@Kinetic79 with the copper trolling wire I was able to get 150 feet of wire on the spool. My assumption was that since the uncoated wire is conductive, the wire left on the spool would contribute to the overall length of the antenna by the width of the spool. My thought was that if that were true then I should be able to spool out the exact length I need for each band I want to work or I could run out a length for 40 or even 80 and take advantage of the multi band aspect of the EFHW. Basically dial a specific band or go multi-band. So far my testing has confirmed it does work as expected, even if my understanding of what actually going on is incorrect.
@1979Iceman
@1979Iceman Год назад
@@Kinetic79 both of those work the same way so I consider that one variant. The other is the coated wire variant and that one is a bit tricky since you need the wire to be connected at the spool end. This requires a clutch type connection so that it remains electronically connected while winding. More to come

I have 2 of the Viet Nam era army fishing reel antennas and I use them as a 80 meter dipole or just 1 and use it as a end fed half wave. they work great. I also have the collapseable 110" whip that I can use and get a great vertical using it as a stinger. I enjoy playing with portable multiband antennas and operating QRP. I'm sure you know QRP demands efficant antennas compromise antennas and QRP just doesn't work. I think that is why so many QRP ops give up because they can't make contacts.73 from ki0ad 😊

I love this idea, but in other videos I have seen the feed line attaches to the other end of the antenna. But in this video the feed line attaches to the reel end of the line through that black box right, which is a lot smarter. But how does this get wired? Did he have to drill a hole in the reel to run the wire into the feed line connector? It would be great to see a close up of that connection. thanks.

Ever since I saw this video there's one thing that buggles my mind. How do you connect the antenna wire on the reel to the hot side of the 49:1 unun?! The wire in the center will inevitably spinn/turn... and not just a few revs. There must be some kind of 'sliding contact' or a comparable solution. This antenna really fascinates me and I would love to try to rebuild this. It's not financially doable to import one to Germany. The price of $120 may be adequate, but with international shipping and import taxes it's rather unobtainable for me. It would be amazing if you could lift secret of 'its guts' by opening one or provide some information for us. Best regards and thank you for your dedication to ham radio.

Will winding up the antenna cause it to choke the RF trying to go down it? Four feet isn't too much but if you have to do 10-15 feet for the WARC bands, it could become an issue. I do like the idea of winding up the radiator wire like that.

@HAMRADIODUDE
@HAMRADIODUDE 11 месяцев назад
I activated the park in just a few moments, making some pretty good contacts. Was there some reactance, probably - but was it critical and preventing me from doing ops, absolutely not. That is correct though, any antenna should not be near anything that may cause reactance and effect the antenna. With that, we do our best with what we have. Cheers.
