Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Laura Dern (Wild), Patricia Arquette (Boyhood), Hilary Swank (The Homesman), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Reese Witherspoon (Wild) and Amy Adams (Big Eyes) discuss their critically acclaimed roles in 2014.
"It's an added responsibility isn't it?" Hilary Swank, the leading actress in "The Homesman" asks the actress roundtable regarding playing a real-life person who is still alive. "The challenge of just acting in general and telling the story as honestly as possible but then when you have someone and they're still alive, it's an added challenge." Patricia Arquette from "Boyhood" discusses how the movies low-budget really added to the authenticity of the emotional experience of the production. Julianne Moore shares with the ladies that her most challenging moment in her career so far was going to the Golden Globes six weeks after her son was born. "Wild" actress Reese Witherspoon discusses that her most embarrassing moment in Hollywood was when a casting director accused her of playing the character "stoned" during an audition. Laura Dern shares with her colleagues that her most excruciating moment in Hollywood was when her dog got her period on Scott Baio's white leisure pantsuit. Felicity Jones confesses that the actresses' careers she would most like to emulate are all sitting at the roundtable around her. "I know that seems very cheesy and cliched but I'm actually being truthful," the Oscar-nominee shares.

I'm a black filmmaker who hopes to work in the industry one day, and I don't think there's anything wrong with having an all white roundtable. I say that because people act like this is done on purpose, but the truth is all of these actresses are on the oscar radar for their performances this year. I haven't seen all the movie but I've seen Boyhood and I think she should be nominated for her work. So why would you replace her with a black actress just for the sake of having a black actress on the roundtable. That would be racist. Also look at last years roundtable, they had Oprah, Lupita Nyongo, and Octavia Spencer. But because they all had great performances.

IA. Hollywood does have a diversity problem (and a gender problem) - more so when it comes to LEAD actors and people at the top (producers/directors) rather than just actors in general - but pointing to this one table and collection of actors to prove racism in Hollywood is misguided. Black Americans are only 13/14% of the population, so there's not going to be a black actress nominated every year. I do think the lack of quality material centered around or given to black female actresses this year, though, can be partially attributed to an intersection of racism/sexism.
@superNowornever
@superNowornever 9 лет назад
Thank you for your comment. As an older black woman, I find these red herring grievances to just dilute the real social issues that need to be addressed. This was a panel of 7 actresses for one particular year of filmmaking. Last year the panel was 50% black. This constant whine and refrain really detracts from valuable issues these actresses were discussing.

Felicity Jones kept looking as though she wanted to say something but either held back or was spoken over before she could get her bit in, which is upsetting because I'm sure she has so much insight to share being a young actress, but her quietness is totally understandable -- she's around very veteran, experienced actresses, so along with intimidation, I'm sure her focus was on taking in what they had to say. I can only hope she's on a future round-table having succeeded with another smashing role, and with a bit more conversation to provide. Also, Patricia Arquette was bringing it, she was being downright real -- loved her commentary. This was a very lovely round-table, but yes, I like everyone else hope to see more diversity, and more PoC from films when it comes to leading roles -- there are so many voices to be heard, and so many different perspectives from so many different people and cultures and I would love to see that at a round-table very soon. Here's to next year!

I can't believe everyone is talking about racism in the comment section. These women told phenomenal stories, and portrayed profound characters. This panel was just so lovely and insightful. Every year THR picks actresses whose films generated oscar buzz. We do not know who they invited prior, and I would rather see actresses who are there based on their performances, not to fill a quota.

Agreed. It makes me laugh that people are complaining about lack of diversity at a roundtable. You're pointing in the wrong direction; Hollywood is the one who is making the casting decisions. How can POC actors participate in a roundtable if they don't have an Oscar-worthy role?

It's fucking ridiculous how some people are commenting that this roundtable is racist. Shut the fuck up seriously just because there is no black actress it's not because they are racists. If a black actress didn't delivered a great performance to be there should they just put there just because it's what sounds correct to do? These actresses were invited here because of the movies that are featured here not because it's some conspiracy of racism. People are so hateful these days and literally criticize everything without knowing anything they just try to make a statement.

I know, is not the reporters fault, there just aren’t that many great roles out there for people of color. Whenever there are, they always invite them to the roundtables, for example last year there were many people of color in all of the roundtables, because they were great Oscar contenders.

Critiquing the severe lack of diversity and available work for women of color in Hollywood is not hate in any way, shape, or form. It'd be one thing if people were putting these women down, but I don't see that. If anything, it's an accurate commentary on the fact that the collective movie making industry as a whole needs to do better. Asking for better opportunities and more representation is not hateful, not even in the slightest.
@wolfstar675
@wolfstar675 9 лет назад
Rebecca K. This women are here because of the films they did which are up for oscar nominations and they didn't had any woman of color because there was no specific performance they could have have added for this specific roundtable. Besides there are great roles for people of color on films there are many. Last oscar ceremony many Steve McQueen won an oscar as well as Lupita Nyongo. There are roundtables with actors and directors of different races but not for this specific one. If someone didn't gave an interesting performance it wasn't because of the race it was because of the actor, character, script, direction whatever many things could go wrong but not because of race.
@becathist
@becathist 9 лет назад
Enrique Godinez Did you not read my entire comment or... Also, last year was a standout rarity. Women of color in film are constantly talking about the lack of roles. Really, google it, it's not some made up issue. Asking for better is in no way "hate."

Patricia has always been an awesome person with great insights into life, and am always excited to hear what she has to say. The only thing about these shows is the Male interviewers rarely seem to really listen to their guests. They have a set of questions and they stick to the formula even if the conversation is heading in a completely different direction. It’s greatest when one of the other guests asks are question, which is usually really interesting and insightful. I have been in a RU-vid spiral watching these all day. :)

These women touched upon so many important questions of our lives, I wish we had more of these kinds of conversations in everyday life. Reflective, constructive, and based upon a set of very good values. You can really tell how grown each one of them is and how brilliant their world view is. This makes me realize I should really get rid of some friends with poor value systems and low emotional intelligence who judge a lot and unfairly and treasure friends with emotional maturity like this

I love Patricia Arquette :) I hope she wins. But Meryl Streep's on the way so whoever wins supporting actress, I'm fine. :D

Rosamund Pike is not invited ?? She deserved to be in this table more than any of these actresses , she will win the Oscar too ! That kind of performance is rarely seen by any kind of actress!

This is amazing, it's great to see all these amazing actresses, some more experienced than others but talented nonetheless, sit together and have such an amazing conversation about their experiences as actresses as well as their personal lives. I love watching them be so "human" and makes you feel more relatable to them. I feel very often they get put on a pedestal, which they don't necessarily choose to be put on, and we forget that before they were famous they had normal lives. And even those who have done it for years they've lived life just as we do, so it's nice to be reminded that these beautiful humans are so personable.

Thankfully and finally conversation with these amazing women: witty, intelligent and resourceful actresses! This is the side we want to see from them. I'm sure they are grateful, as am I, for this opportunity to share insightful experiences. Someone (THR) got it right!

How is Laura Dern cast as Reese's mother. What did she give birth to her when she was 7?

she plays in flashback.

blur95 Laura has scenes with Reese in some of those flashbacks so it's still a little strange. Laura wasn't made to look older either.

I thinke Reese plays 21 or something in flashback with her mother. So there weren't any need for her to look older.

I've really enjoyed this, but I'm sad to see there were no women of colour taking part. There are lots of great actresses of colour in Hollywood, and I'm sure their perspective would have been a valuable addition to this conversation.

Katin Ka the panel the year before this had 3 black actresses and the one this year had 1, black actors are present in most of the panels for actors and directors as well. They only interview ppl who have major awards buzz for that year
