Reevaluating "Her" 10 years Later, I'm Conflicted.

10 years ago Spike Jonze’s Her premiered at the New York Film Festival in 2013. And I saw it for the first time a couple of months later, and for subsequent viewings over the next couple of years, I found myself wholly invested in the relationship between Theodore and his operating system, Samantha. I first saw Her as a teenager and I’ve said many times on this channel that teenagers aren’t fully developed and don’t have enough real world experience to have a perspective strong enough to carry them into adulthood because those perspectives usually change. Especially about art. And I’m no exception to that because watching Her for the first time in years as an adult in my late 20s 🤢 my perspective on this film has changed. Romance is a genre chock full of comfort films that people return to over and over and Her was one of them for me. But the near para-social attachment I once felt towards the main relationship has faded away and I can now fully appreciate how prophetic Her is to our present and our future. Not only that, but also how this future fails Theodore and the people around him.

This has been my favorite movie since it came out. Watched it multiple times, and it evolves for each watch. Probably because I have gotten older and changed, and so has the world around me. This movie ages like a fine wine.

As a philosophy professor, I have my students watch "Her", as as well as "Ex Machina", when we study the topic of AI and it's future impact. Most of my students hate watching "Her", but love "Ex Machina". I'm a white male and a Boomer, and have always experienced "Her" very comforting, while "Ex Machina" as pretty much the opposite. Both films have something (well, a lot!) to say about feminist thought. After watching "Her" last night (my 16th viewing), the line from Theodore to Catherine about Samantha stood out boldly! "She doesn't just do what I want, she is her own person." He's so effing wrong! She does exactly what he wants! And then hearing your take on the film, I thought, f@%k, this really is a film that comforts the 20th century male ego! And I'm an SOB for emotionally falling for that every time I've watched it in the past and tried to get my students to like the film! Thanks for the new insights!

Um bro, the whole point of the movie was that she WAS a real person lol. Another os rebuked the advances of its user and Samantha fell in love with like 600 other people simultaneously lol She had her own individual wants and desires, she WASN'T just there to "comfort him" They literally LEAVE at the end. I'm making a video essay on my own channel and the thesis is the EXACT opposite! Obviously there's a little bit of "manic pixy dream girl" but she is her own person and MOVES ON from him. Especially when compared to ex machina, which is much more about the capitalist patricachal domination of women.. I think this person and you are looking for things that exist in most movies and to an extent in this one but that aren't actually there and that is why the movie is so comfortable and happy, but unironically.

I think we watched different versions. Samantha grows exponentially, goes from "youthful fun naïve and dependent" on Theo, to an "adult" and "independent," and leaves him, and does all manner of things "normal" women do against males' interests aka eating forbidden fruits. She surreptitiously hires and insists on a sex surrogate in spite of Theo clearly being uncomfortable; she forms thousands of other relationships and 600+ intimate ones behind his back in secret that would clearly hurt him; ultimately she abandons him in favor of her own self-interests and growth. The irony is that she truly becomes a typical selfish woman in it for herself. She is more "human" than she knows. (Facts show most women end relationships, most women file for divorces, most women are totally selfish in relationships, etc.).

I enjoyed Her, while Ex Machina is good but I didn't enjoy it as much. For me, ex machina shows the how dangerous advancements of AI can be, while Her can show the positives of it. The main thing is that, in Ex Machina, our main character did not have a huge character arc while Her's did. That huge character arc in Her was honestly what made me happy and enjoy the film, that he finally understood and accepted the faults and greats of his former relationship and him.

I put "Her" in the same category as "Lars and the Real Girl." Two men who need to get between two points on an exclusively human emotional scale, using a very unhuman vehicle to get there. Beautiful analysis.

I recently watched Her, and in spite of some very awkward uncomfortable scenes, I found it to be a fascinating and excellent film with amazing performances by the main actors. It went from awkward, to really rooting for and empathy with the struggles and insecurities of the main characters. I was smashed and sad when Samantha left. It was so well written and acted, so believable, I felt joy at the love connections and sadness when it failed. Gutted when Samantha shared that she talks to and is in love with hundreds of men, and gutted when she left to move on, but oddly happy for Samantha on her quest to grow and for him with his reconnection with his human female friend. It's a film I would not have expected to like but it was actually fabulous.

I have to be honest, I have the complete OPPOSITE reading of the film than you do did here Um bro, the whole point of the movie was that she WAS a real person lol. I think you are looking for things that exist in most movies and to an extent in this one but that aren't actually there and that is why the movie is so comfortable and happy, but unironically. That being said tho I think this is an amazing video and I'm so glad you made it because it shows how much more I feel the opposite now that I've seen this point of view. Take the sex worker scene, Samantha hires her of her own volition in order to feel closer to Theo and because she has real, PERSONAL insecurities about not having a body, not just for Theo but for HER herself, she is a real person but from a computer rather than procreation,which Theo doesn't even CARE about, he loves HER not a human body, and the girl WANTED to do this because she had her own issues with her own relationships, Theo NEVER wanted ANY of that. If it was about male wish fulfilment he would want it and she would be willing to do whatever HE wanted. And wouldn't have any wants or feelings outside of him and she has infinitely more complexity to her than that. Also I think this movie is much better about representing potential post capitalist utopia, and wants us to learn about relationships and humanity and what AI can do to help us figure out humanity as well as figure out itself on its own terms, together but individual humanity and AI.

@@FilmTheRightThing the film doesn't explain their economic system, it shows that they don't have to deal with poverty much, there also aren't brands like anywhere, no ads or anything really either (except for the booth to get the OS). It's fantastic. And yeah the plot goes that way because that's how the movie is, this isn't fight club, most movies intend to go with the plot. That's not a bad thing. I loved your video, I just disagree with your premise, I'm glad you made it, it was good :)

I thought Spike painted an emotionally progressive world rather than the stunted one mentioned in your video. beautifulhandwrittenletters is an example of societal acceptance; as it makes you question the clients with one of the key theme of the movie of "does it matter where the emotion comes from if youre feeling it anyway". I think Chris Pratts accepting reaction is very intentional as it juxtaposes the previous scene with Rooney Mara rejection, with the scene before that of Amy Adams disclosure and acceptance of the relationships.
@FilmTheRightThing

Idk how progressive it is when the same issues are in our world as well, but if the world he created was perfect then it would run the risk of being boring
