In this experiment we recorded a bout and at the end of each exchange interviewed the fencers and judges to see what their perception of the match was.
RESULTS:

1. Overall the cumulative "picture" of the match was good across participants.
2. Sometimes a judge would notice one fencer's movements but not the others - Perhaps assign judges to a specific fencer?
3. Fencer perceptions varied at the same rate as judges.
4. The descriptions used across fencers and judges was varied and inconsistent.
This final point was the major outcome of the day - fencers and judges would do well to have a shared lexicon of judging phraseology to improve communications in competitive events.
