Just buy the gas cartridage head converter for your stove that allows you to us the the non threaded canisters on your threaded head you don't have to transfer any gas then and in the process you don't risk blowing you head off lol

Have used the very cheap non threaded 4 pack butane/propane cartridges for at least 5 years in conjunction with a threaded adaptor (bought off ebay for just pence, but the metal capped ones like I have for about £10 are better tbh) I have a Bulin T4 stove which has an 18" hose. Like you say Maff, "what I do" (thus I'm in no way advocating you follow suit, wink wink) is my way to brew in the cold... I hold the canister 6" above the flame for no more than 10 seconds gently shaking it WHILE THE STOVE IS RUNNING to warm the gas, the cannister would explode if it was separate as there would be nowhere for the expanded gas to go, but with the cannister connected and the stove valve OPEN and running, it escapes at higher pressure, and as you'll soon discover the gas becomes turbo charged to boil the kettle in no time, (especially so, on the coldest of days... ) I have done it like this for years, my eyebrows are still bushy. No need for a Coleman petrol stove if you know this little trick, just something you can't advocate, so I wouldn't ever publicly say to do it... cough cough! Good luck for your 2019 campaigns and great Farlows video btw...

If you over fill the cartridge it wont explode but the concave bottom will push out, thats why all pressured cans have that shaped bottom.
@drcarp7377
@drcarp7377 3 года назад
Hi Maff. Something for you to think on, but the pressure inside a gas canister that contains both a liquid and a gas depends on not how full it is, but on the type of gas, and it’s temperature. That is because every gas has its own saturated vapour pressure. So two butane canisters will be at the same pressure, irrespective of how much fuel they contain, providing they are at equal temperatures and some liquid still remains. What you are probably doing, without realising it, is connecting a gas bottle that is warmer, to one that is cooler. Or perhaps one has a slightly different gas mixture to the other. Propane, for example, has a higher vapour pressure than butane. The other thing you will notice, is as one canister empties, it’s temperature starts to rapidly fall. That is because, the liquid is evaporating inside the canister. This is called the joule Thompson effect. Overall, what you are doing will still work, providing you keep the filling canister warmer. Oh, and the reason why you should never completely fill a canister is because liquid is basically incompressible. So if the temperature in the gas canister goes up and it’s full of liquid, the pressure can quickly increase to beyond the design pressure of the canister. I don’t want to sound a smart arse, but I am a chemical engineer!
@Dreyno
@Dreyno 2 года назад
Not a smart arse when it’s all facts 👍 I pop the empty canister in the freezer for 5 minutes and the one I’m filling it from inside my jacket. Then bring them outside and start filling, checking regularly with a digital scales until I have about 90% of the original labelled gas capacity in the canister I’m filling.

Propane and butane have different weights, I believe the Coleman canisters are 30/70 split of propane and butane, the CP250 carriages used to fill in this vid are only butane I think. If you take Calor bottles, the smaller ones are 3.9 kgs for propane and 4.5 kgs for butane. As mentioned by someone else, probably easier and more versatile to get the cartridge adaptor.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew 2 года назад
Pure butane performs better in warmer weather and gives off more energy/heat, whereas the mix, usually 80% butane/20% propane, performs better in colder temperatures and boils at - 6°C/21.2°F because it stays in the gas phase at lower temperatures.
@kurtsteiner8384

I can only suggest you read boyles law. If you fill it at a low altitide, and take it to a higher altitude the gas in the cylinder will expand. Conversly if you fill at high altitude, and bring it down to lower altitude there will be less gas. For every 10 meters of altitude or depth the gas will either increase by 1/3 attmospheres or decrease by the sa.e amount. Be carefull it can be dangerious doing tbat.

Hi again Matt, I got one of those from fleabay, and also at the same time got the adaptor that fits the el cheapo cans, so you have a proper screw thread to fit the can to your stove. Obviously only useful for stoves that have a flexible stove to bottle connection. Tried both and they work well, much cheaper as you have said. I think I paid £3 for both from fleabay. If you keep refilling the same cylinder, it will eventually get water condensing inside, which can rust the cylinder from the inside. There have been cases of the cylinder then exploding in use. Obviously not a good situation when you’re on your own up a hillside or in the woods at night!

Perhaps I'm being a bit thick (not for the first time) - once you've half filled the target canister and therefore half emptied the source, isn't the pressure the same so no more gas will go in? You'll be left with hundreds of half empty ones, surely? :)
@MaffTUK
@MaffTUK 3 года назад
Now then firstly that is not a thick question and has been put top me before, there is a point where your filling can stops filling the other, but its all down to liquids and gases and a little help from the freezer. I'm not going to pretend I'm a scientist and try to baffle you but although the theory of equal pressure should come into play ...it doesn't and the filling can will unload a minimum of 85 to 90% of its content into the filled can. You can help this by keeping your filling can nice and warm and cooling the can to be filled in the freezer for 30 minutes before you fill. This alone will make a massive difference. I think (and think it is) that because your can is upside down you are pushing out liquid instead of gas and this then acts like any aerosol so the pressure drops a lot less rapidly until you start trying to empty the last bits and you start getting the gas. Now I could be talking utter rubbish but the system works even if the cans are not different temperatures. 🤷‍♀️ so i hope that sort of explains what i think is going on. regards Matt👍
@catlady8324
@catlady8324 3 года назад
@@MaffTUK You are correct. The reason the pressure drops while cold is because you’re lowering the BOILING POINT.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew 2 года назад
Alternatively, you can add just a little gas to the can being filled, leave it five minutes, then release the gas, producing a cold can. Wasteful, yes, but handy, if you're out in the field or in a rush for whatever reason. 😉

@@MaffTUK Much obliged Matt. Indeed money-wise it makes no sense but to anyone who's reading this I should again stress I got those screw-valve ones for free. An old time friend dumped them on me but the only propane device I have is a portable gas heater, which requires the cheaper type of canister, hence the question. My plan is to keep a couple empty cheaper canisters and refill each of them a few times before disposal. I do not think it is safe to refill the same canister over and over but just a few times of partial refill, say 80%, should be good enough.

As Maff says, he ignores that, as do many of us (because the manufacturers are bound by law to adhere to safety regulations to ensure public safety, but also, as you heard in the vid, they don't want us using a cheaper method to obtain gas, as that eats into their profits) but takes precautions to lessen the chance of accidents, such as using the correct adaptor and *not* overfilling beyond the cannister's stated capacity! I use cannisters three or four times and have done for a few decades, then get rid of them and I'm still here to tell the tale. As long as you keep focused there shouldn't be a problem. The can has a weight. Don't fill it over that weight. Use scales, if it makes you feel better. If you accidently do, then release the excess gas. If the aerosol is 197g, then you know it will fit safely into a 220g canister. Unless you plan a prolong stay outdoors, then maybe carry a spare aerosol.

Is it possible to over fill them? How do you kno when it’s full?
@MaffTUK
@MaffTUK 5 лет назад
yes it is possible to overfill the canisters, due to the gasses expanding in warmer climate so the warmer the external temperature the more room the gas needs which is why they are never full from new.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew 2 года назад
As Maff has said in the vid, never fill beyond the off the shelf weight. To be even safer, never fill beyond the stated content, as that will have allowed for a certain amount of gas expansion.

Check in comments. Someone else called _Atube Viewer_ asked the same question and Maff provided a link. As I read it, it's posted above your question, right now, but RU-vid has a habit of shuffling the comments.

It's a gas, in the form of a flammable liquid. If you are not careful droplets escape and will cling and saturate nearby surfaces. It's a task better done outdoors.
