Good point, fail or broken it's no problem, but after 3-5 fail/broken you need 1 success, and after success 1-2 or 4 it depends on your fail and success, but surely if that happen you have 1 success

if you want to be sure for success you can do alay first and do so on as before, if your item goes to 9 and broken repair it and count 6 that 80% chance or rate in getting +10 back

most important bro do not refine quickly counting is like putting an item to be cooked 👍 but i use counting in different sec as i refine everytime
