A fine young man (Justin) dropped off some lead shielding from an old X-Ray room demolition job. I melted the sheeting down into some rough ingots that need some major refining to clean all of the slag and waste out of the ingots. This is how I do it! Important links below:

Once lead is poured into cast iron, the cast iron can no longer be used for cooking food. Once you retire a cast iron pot from lead smelting, it should be destroyed.
@JohnDoeEagle1
@JohnDoeEagle1 Год назад
Non gun/reloader types ALWAYS say that. Don't you think when we die with a house full of guns, knives, swords, tomahawks, archery (bows/crossbows/arrows), reloading/casting equipment, ammo, hunting, fishing stuff people won't be smart enough to tell the grungy cast iron pots and pans from the stuff in the kitchen?! 1966 original stuff is black and seasoned from cooking. Newer cast iron is all rusty and cruddy from melting lead in them. 🤪🙄

Rocking raptor# While wax does work.. Sawdust is the better flux. The trick is to let the sawdust fully carbonized before you stir, scrape, and skim. I find wax is best used in the casting pot and is an excellent reducer!

I've Enjoyed your Southern hospitality, personality, and walking me through the smelting process of making 00 buckshot. I envy your white tail deer population as in Ca we have small blacktail deer and some larger Mule deer in the north east area of the state, but the weather is much less severe,.except for the draught, fires and occasional earthquake. Have taken most of my deer with bow but now that I am a senior, I've gotten back into long gun hunting. So glad I've found your videos, keep up the great work, so easy to watch and great information and resource referral.

I was just scrolling through comments to see if anyone else mentioned this but that's the same issue I had when i first started casting with that rainbow looking lead, lowered the temp and poof, no more oil slicks, just beautiful clean ingots. I was told it doesn't affect the lead negatively but I didn't like it personally.

I'd like to see someone do this with wax and stir and a different one just stirring. I don't see how the candle was burning off acts as s flux to pull that stuff up when the slag is already lighter than the lead.

@larryalexander4833

Old batteries can be dangerous to use. The lead from battery contaminated from the acid can give off poison gas ( type of nerve gas ) that can kill .

Yes sir I have. It took a bit of work & I didn't get a whole lot. I really didn't know what to expect. But I would do it again before I would waste it!. I usually recycle them for money but I had some that were busted up & I melted them down. If you have a lot you could definitely get a nice pile of lead! Casting is great & the cheapest way to shoot & reload by far. I have lots of 9mm stocked up & you can by molds for about any caliber. I powder coat my bullets just like B.R.O. does his buckshot. Good luck bud & be safe! 👍👍🙏🇺🇸

@BubbaRountreeOutdoors
@BubbaRountreeOutdoors 2 года назад
I like both David! But I prefer the wheel weight alloy because it is a good bit harder than pure lead and patterns better at extended ranges! The pure lead pours a little better and fills the molds a little easier.

@@BubbaRountreeOutdoors thanks. I have about 50 lbs of wheel weight lead and around 100lbs of X-ray room lead. I’ve been using the X-ray lead for fishing lures and thought the wheel weight would be better for buckshot because it is harder.

@martinsonofwar395

Impurities in the lead caused by other elements. Might be bismuth judging by the colors. I highly doubt it is titanium due to the temperatures required for titanium to liquefy

I was curious about that also. Normally I have discovered any Zink present when wheel weights not separated properly produces a blue/purple color. This being from an X-Ray lab, don't know if Zink was present or not? Interesting.
