It takes a big painting to do justice to the phenomenal history and diversity of birds. It also takes an artistic process that is as much about the science as it is about the aesthetics. Get a behind-the-scenes view of how artist Jane Kim brought all 270 species to life on this ambitious natural history mural in this short film narrated by Cornell Lab of Ornithology Director John Fitzpatrick.
To view the mural up close, see this interactive web based version of the mural at academy.allaboutbirds.org/fea...

Scientific accuracy vs. artistic expression: Based on this presentation, looks like Ms. Kim nailed it. Hat's off to a wonderful and important project.

This young lady is an awesome composition all on her own herself. So wonderful to see someone who has become a master at her passion and found a way to make it a productive career. That is something I don't see very often, but I wish I did. Thank you for a wonderful video.

So damn cool, that detail and texture she gets into the birds is insane, incredibly life like. I wish I had my walls done up like this by such a skilled artist

I love how the prehistoric birds are grayed out and in the background. It adds the feeling of remembrance. Love this mural and will visit soon!

Accuray and artistry worthy goals- a talented science illustrator. Really appreciate how the birds are in situ on the map. Understandable why extinct animals were included. Yet the evolutional connection is the fictional element of this mural. 🦉

As an artist myself, I am in awe of the amount of work that went into this mural. It's like the Sistine Chapel, but with birds! 🌎❤🐦

This is just a phenomenol mural created by Jane and a wonderful celebration of bird diversity and natural history. I enjoyed hearing about the research and creative processes to plan this ambitous mural! Creating a detailed drawing for the purposes of muscle memory to later do it at scale takes incredible patience and discipline.

What medium is this? Watercolor? Acrylic Ink? Some other ink? something else? How was the wall prepped? This is a gorgeous mural.

I'm not 100% sure, but it's most likely professional grade acrylics, applied with a Niji waterbrush. Edit: I just came across the details myself from an excerpt of her book: "I developed my own avian Pantone chart. Every time I had to make a new color, I’d create and name a custom mix of latex interior house paint. Some, like Flamingo Pink, were so unique I used them only once. Others proved to be more common." A review goes on to say: "She then goes on to show examples of 53 colors she used, from Cassowary Black to Albatross Light. Only two of those 53 are stock colors! Additionally, thirteen Golden Fluid Acrylics paints were used for 'finishing touches', which are also displayed."
