wildtruth.net/films-recovery-s... I started my career as a filmmaker making documentaries on therapeutic treatment for psychosis and schizophrenia without medication. Here are some follow-up reflections on my films, which, by the way, are all on this youtube channel for free! And for translations of my films into other languages (about 25 languages at this point), check out my website: wildtruth.net/films-recovery-s...

The more narcissistic a parent, therapist or society, the more likely they are to pathologise a distressed individual, and resort to giving them medication for emotional and social problems.
@HabitualLover

It's no coincidence Daniel Mackler is American-born. Pathologizing the distressed is as American as slavery and racism- it's in the dirty fabric of America, and America just insists on not cleaning up its laundry so it can turn the Tide. (See what I did there? Haha. But jokes aside.)

My "undefined psychosis" was complaining about my family's narcissistic abuse (gaslighting, triangulation, victim-blaming, flying monkeys...). "You have undefined psychosis because you think you are being abused" "You think you are being abused because you are psychotic" Basically, I was labelled as someone who can't see "reality" for complaining about reality. This is the mental health field at its core.

2) It's not about your wellbeing, it's about your well-acting (aka, how comfortable you make others feel). I had my brothers accompany me to the last psych appointment to "testify" in my favour (because it was like I was being judged like a criminal). They both admitted that yes: all that I said was right. I wasn't "making it up". The psych ended the session saying "well, I don't have to write anything in the chart". I'm not sure if she actually wrote anything about what my brothers said. This was after my first psychiatrist ghosted me because of the brain scans that showed literal cortico-subcortical atrophy. They never took accountability. My physical health went from perfect to horrible and life-threatening and doctors only gaslight me. I don't have much hope at this point.

You're not the only one I've seen experience this situation! Explaining narcissistic abuse can come across as strange to those who never have been the at receiving end of one if the strangest interpersonal patterns: "loves ones" of narcissism. I always make sure to communicate I am aware of the language and terms of it while also learning the language of how the individual made sense of the experience and what they would like in the future moving forward so communication is on the same topic.

Very important distinctions! Once people have been exposed to psychiatric care involving Coercion that involves being labeled and diagnosed, forcibly drugged, and having your rights taken away by being put away against one’s will. They have to be healed from that system and their disempowering treatment that usually just obliterates their sense of human trust and can kill their very spirit. Our system of so-called care often creates the very problems it claims to solve. It also only further destroys families in the process.

What normal people did to me when I was diagnosed with a mental illness: Abuse to the tenth power, gaslighting, I taped them, took my child away, gave my things away. I became more mentally ill when the normal people started to psychologically and physically and sexually torture me.

I knew a guy who was depressed, he was recommended trying an antidepressant. Was on Zoloft for a month, didnt do anything. He was bridged to Prozac. He then had suicidal thoughts, Panic attacks. He was taken to a psych ward. They put him on Haldol, Seroquel and a benzo. Now he has permanent TD, Tardive Dyskenesia and dystonia . Its like Parkinson's on steroids.

I had a case-manager tell me today that she was "proud of me" for agreeing to go for counseling ( to an agency that I've heard only bad things about but the only one my insurance would cover). Her words to me were like a signal that I was going down another dangerous rabbit-hole.

Hi Daniel, what an interesting talk! Having been very anxious, depressed and what they call psychotic myself, and as a result being forcibly put in a closed psychiatric ward for more than three months, I can totally relate to this. The environment I was put in was full of people in great distress, in fact exactly the opposite of the envoronment I needed. I have been in isolation for weeks, which was really traumatising, and, in fact, illegal as well. After coming out of this awful situation, having refused their chemical 'treatment' to a large extent, I thought that what I really needed at that moment was a healthy, loving and nurturing environment, among sane people. It is so good for me to hear that in Scandinavia they actively pursue this approach, as they still have a social system of health care there. I guess it's very unlikely that something like that will ever happen in the US, or even in Holland where I live. I don't think the purpose of a commercialised medical system is really to heal people, but to make money of their suffering, under the guise of 'care'. And I feel the situation in the US is probably even far worse than in the Netherlands. Here there is still some degree of understanding that a system is there to help the people which is, from what I observe, practically totally lacking in the US. The medicalisation of basically social or cultural issues is now really bothersome to me. The pushing, based on lies, of the Covid-jab on such a large scale, even upon people who were unlikely to benefit from it, like even babies and young people, who now sometimes suffer the dire consequences from it, it, in my mind, criminal and unforgiveable. In my own case, I consented to it because they told it this would stop the further spread of the disease. This was a blatant lie. I would not have taken the jab if they had told the truth. Unfortunately, lying for financial gain has become kind of a virtue, after 40 years of neoliberalism. It doesn't seen to lead to any kind of shame anymore. For myself, I have taken the decision to stay away from mainstream medicine as much as possible, and to not trust so called authorities and experts any more. I think I might live longer, healthier and happier doing so. Thanks for this one Daniel.

Treating psychosis with anti-psychotics sounds a lot like treating intense limb pain with strong pain-numbing medication (which can also cause severe stomach issues) instead of fixing the source of the pain, e.g. a nerve trapped between displaced vertebrae. At least in this case there's the excuse that nerve-related surgery is still in its infancy and is risky. It also reminds me of how there are a lot of over-the-counter drugs which reduce fever, coughing and runny nose during illness while those are actually the ways the body combats disease, not the disease itself. People focus on treating symptoms because it's so much easier than to actually look deeper.

"wildtruth" is wildly transcendent! Thanks for being wild, Daniel. One of the best quotes ever about "psychosis" is recorded in "Anatomy of an Epidemic" on page 341, where Tapio Salo (Keropudas Hospital) says, "Psychosis does not live in the head. It live in the in-between of the family members . . ."

Living in a country (U.S. here) with bad overall mental health is bad for anyone’s mental health, but what passes for treatment here is even more appalling. I could fill volumes with personal anecdotes of friends and family. In my own case, I experienced multiple episodes of psychosis which landed me in the hospital and the psychiatric system. Antipsychotics were a truly hellish experience. Near complete loss of will, persistent anhedonia, and too many other effects to list here. I did not perceive a single benefit. I took myself off them against advice, struggled at first, then made a full recovery. I wish I could say I benefitted from therapy as I do believe it can work with the right therapist, but I don’t feel I did. The right move would have likely been to seek a different therapist, but I lacked the will to have even a mild confrontation. All in all, my experiences with our mental health system have left me thoroughly disillusioned. The resources that helped the most mainly came from the internet, this channel included. Life now is more beautiful than ever. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. My career is going well and I’m in a loving relationship. That seems to be in defiance of expectations here, which is truly sad.

If the psychosis isn’t due to underlying infection / inflammation ( which happens a lot and goes undetected ) - then these programs are perfect . Our American mental health system is a big, fat , well-funded disaster . I have been in the field (LCSW) for 30+ years . I appreciate these videos . You are spot on . Socialized mental health services here would not/ do not look like this because our government is in bed with many pet industries , big pharma being one of them . We would end up with stupid bureaucrats administering stupid , wrong , and expensive “evidence based “ care , which is not care at all .

what I can remember is, at my first episode I could feel I have to avoid the treatment of the healtcare system because all I wanted was to reconnect with people after all what happend... It s like I was already knowing that psychosis is not a problem to fix inside my brain but a problem between me and others ... unfortunatly I finally acepted to take those medication because it was all the care I was offered here... no psychotherapie, no family therapy, ...Then I discovered The open dialogue approach with your documantary, and I was like "I knew it"! To say, even if they are suffering deeply with psychotic break, people can feel, they can know what they need but unfortunatly the medical care system is absolutly unable to listen to them properly, here in france

I was in a relationship with someone who has schizophrenia for 7 years. I thought my love would help him but it never did. It was 10 years ago. So I began to think there was nothing to do about it. It seemed he didn't wanted to do something about it except taking medication or drinking alcohol. He hurted me so much I had to go. I thought then that was a part of the mental illness. Now when I'm listening to you, it's bringing me back to all this and I wonder could it have been any different?
@hai-mel6815
@hai-mel6815 4 года назад
You asked Daniel, but I'd like to give an answer too. I don't think it could have been any different. Love by a partner can't be a substitute for the caring behaviour of a good (enough) parent, mostly because both parties have their own needs and everything is reciprocal. Other things can, for example the trust relationship you build up with a good therapist. So don't worry, you did nothing wrong. :)

Oh my goodness. What you said about the meds making someone numb, and taking away passion & motivation .. speaks HUGE facts. This is exactly what my husband has experienced. He was in and out of a psych facility 3 times when he was transitioning out of the army .. it made things 100 times worse. He was separated from me, his only support at the time. Family thought he was trying to just get a medboard out of the army. Therapists told him things were just "in his head" or said hurtful/judgemental comments to him. That was about 4 or 5 years ago. He had been juggling his meds, debating if they are the real answer to his healing. Currently he has been about 6 months med free, and i can see a positive difference. It makes me so sad knowing that if he had just gotten the help he needed early on, things would have been very different. Its like it just kept digging at the wounds. Thanks for you intelligent insight, doctor. ♡

This video verifies my lived experience. I went through a terrible trauma and had a psychotic break. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder hospitalised and put on antipsychotic medication. At the same time I was not believed when I told my story. I am in my 60s now and still trying to wean myself off the medications after years of struggle to live with the sedating affects of them not to mention the physical side effects such as weight gain. I have managed to halve the dose in 6 years but my brain has been so altered by these drugs that I now have hyperactive symptoms when I lower the dose that I did not have as a young person before I was medicated.

I was basically able to do the supportive family thing in the USA through living with my boyfriend and his parents. It DOES work. Another important piece was taking an advocate to Dr appointments. I was able to regain some of that belief that I could actually get well, and then did. Mood stabilizers and antipsychotics were not a good intervention for me. Great video David!

Hi Daniel. I was treated for psychosis 10 years ago and medication helped me a lot. Yes, you are right, being kept in hospital was traumatising and the treatment could be done in much more humane way. But, also, I believe at that time I needed meds for functioning of my brain and I think it was necessary. The doctors reminded me multiple times not to go off my meds and now I am glad that I did listen to them. (Of course, you never know what would happen if I made different decisions, the scenario might be the same). Just want to point out, each case is different and neuroleptics were a right solution in my case.

Hi Martyna -- thanks for sharing this. Yes, certainly the scientific evidence shows that medications do help a certain percentage of people in altered states. however, from what i've seen most people who say medication was necessary for them don't have the experience of having received excellent non-drug-oriented help (like Finnish Open Dialogue, for example, though there are many other types), which might have helped them even better and perhaps quicker without any of the short- and long-term risks of the medications (or the risks of hospital, force, seclusion, etc.). greetings, daniel

Yeah and when you have a psychotic family member they are keeping everyone awake for days on end, and require multiple people to supervise them 24 hours a day. Also, they could potentially harm themselves or a family member. As well as the fact it’s terrifying for the family members to witness this and not know what’s going on. The family is usually less prepared to deal with this than the professionals. The family is much more likely to rationalize and continue to chalk it up to stress and anxiety. The professionals will, hopefully, identify psychosis much sooner. It’s something that’s so difficult and bizarre that your hands are almost tied into taking them to the hospital.

Does your son have a lot of stress in his life? OCD-like symptoms was one of the most uncomfortable symptoms to be in in the moment for me. I didn't have it regularly though. For me it was a coping mechanism I couldn't stop doing until someone stopped me. I've witnessed a friend with it as well who exhibited that behavior when he was in an extremely difficult point in his life. I don't know for sure, but maybe if his life became less-stressful he wouldn't need those coping mechanisms. I don't know if that is the situation he's in though.

For sure. It's my belief that most, if not all, mental health patients have some degree of physical imbalance too, particularly in the gut as it's intimately tied to the nervous and immune systems. Often the sufferers come from dysfunctional families with emotional, sexual and physical abuse. I'm not sure if the open dialogue would be possible in this case. To involve abusers in the therapeutic process is to overcome their denial. It'd be great to have an open dialogue in the treatment community to break the social stigma and reduce the meds.
@dmackler58
@dmackler58 5 лет назад
i agree. well, and actually i think all families suffer from emotional abuse to one degree or other. i know when people talk about certain types of abuse in the family system, the open dialogue people in finland separate the abusers and don't do family therapy with them. instead they try to offer them their own individual help (or have them arrested if they have committed crimes). it's a complex thing for me, though, because their results are great and they have good scientific validity (which is why they made the film) but in general i'm not for family therapy for the very reason you describe. i personally would have had zero desire to go to therapy with my own family of origin. so it's a bit of a conundrum for me. basically i made the film primarily to show that there are alternatives that get far superior results to the conventional drug-and-force-and-hospitalize model for treating psychosis, however...i do not think their methods are beyond criticism. so thanks for bringing this up. daniel
@agniem9698

Thanks for your reply Daniel. When I saw your documentary and several others on the topic of psychosis I was amazed. My own belief was that schizophrenia is genetic and incurable... Until recently. I train to be a counsellor and just started working with 'mentally ill adults' in residential setting. I am not a therapist, just recovery worker which means I'll be helping them learn life skills to get ready to be a part of community. The process is often prolonged as they are heavily medicated with episodes of hospitalization. Anyway, I am doing this to learn how the system works here in the UK. This all is fascinating for me. Do you think or have any experience of how the mechanism of psychosis develops. Is it possible that is induced by psychoactive substances given the history of early abuse and trauma and the fact that it starts in adolescence- people experimenting with drugs & alcohol? Or does it happen out of the blue?

I'm conflicted, I've been thinking about takings meds or not, I've done them before and sadly they were the only thing that actually gave me peace, on the contrast, how you said in the video the same things that motivates me has to "dissapear" since everything that made me take a desition on this life has been trough disconfort or some sort of pain, my motivations are good but they hurt like hell, and the only thing that frees me from that, makes me kinda functional but puts to sleep everything that I'm. I'm scared and confused, I've been feeling alone and unproductive (more than ever), it hurts me but I can't take anything else from this life, everything that I'm has never been pleasent or rational or rewarding whatsoever and I'm tired.

But, what if a person with "pyschosis" doesn't have psychosis and has been falsely diagnosed because of the family's and friends' need to satisfy their own projection of what the person's life should be like? I have been through this, but I don't think I have psychosis. Its my fight or flight response to what is known as false negatives. I see a potential situation where I could get screwed and I withdraw from it, because that's what my life experience has been. I have a terrible time trusting people, over the years I have gone from 100% trusting to being 100% skeptical of what people (family and unknown people such as shop keepers, or my psychiatrist, I no longer have friends) say to me and as far as possible I tend to fact check everything. I've been on psychiatric medication for 10 years now and I'm fighting an addiction to them. I've been switched from one psychiatric medication to another several times and to offset their side effects been given further medication which is just stupid (why put me on medication with side effects in the first place?). I have been a chronic insomniac for several years, and have had to fall back on psychiatric medication (for a long time I even fell back on weed as the medicines weren't helping me sleep in any way) for sleep. I was for a long time working in work environments that involved changing shifts, which screwed up my circadian rhythm. I still use psychiatric medication to get sleep.

perhaps a not well known cause of psychosis has to do with a person’s spirit/aura being overloaded with compounded residues of unconscious feelings ( spiritual residues ) which all people absorb to some degree yet certain individuals absorb more of these unconscious feelings than others, due to a variety of reasons that have to do with the person’s psychic abilities and feeling capabilities in general along with whether or not the person has been able to feel and receive loving touch ( such as during a therapeutic massage ) ... and there are other aspects as well such as whether or not this person is being projected upon by others through telepathic communication ( this is very challenging to explain yet there are feelings that exist within our overall consciousness that are denser than energy ) eventually feelings must be felt and received consciously and expressed openly, thus verbally, yet there are those who are being affected by feelings that really have nothing to do with their actual life; they are from history ( from past memories from the unconscious) thus the person is not able to make sense of why they are feeling what they are feeling, plus these feelings are usually in a very reactive state, making the person feel out of control. They need to yell yet they are afraid of going berserk and restrict their natural expression since they can not make sense of the angst they are struggling with. psychically they can be experiencing impressions in their inner world ( with their eyes shut ) that can also be upsetting to them since there are “images” along with feelings that do not match their basic reality. gas pains and physical body pains can coincide with their episodes of psychosis their spirit is in turmoil and they need grounding through loving touch with presence and also through connecting with water as in bathing and also drinking water helps too. They must be able to speak and share words or sounds with open eyes and with eye contact with a caring supportive person who can receive them and guide them to also breath and relax and slow down, yet sometimes it is necessary for the person to be able to thrash about with pounding and kicking in a safe environment (that can facilitate such expressions of the body)

And yet some delusions aren't rational from the ordinary life perspective, plus the antipsychotics help many. It's also in practice quite impossible to find anyone spiritually oriented who is competent at healing mental health issues, they will all just gaslight you into believing concepts that are completely pointless for you. Without telepathy it's very hard...

I hear you...but sadly, most mental health care for psychosis in Sweden is not very good -- just lots of drugs and mental hospitals. sometimes ECT too. the Family Care Foundation, the program i filmed for my film "Healing Homes," is an exception in Sweden...

Is there any logistics on long time anti-psychotic users? I’m 36 been horribly taking Risperdal since I was 26.. I’m talking drinking heavily and skipping meds.. then I went cold turkey for 3 months, got hospitalized and the psychosis been worse ever since. They rarely talk about hope for 10 + year users. Is there no hope?

The lack of proper diagnoses, where I was really overwhelmed and emotional but it was not a full on psychosis as diagnosed for me This video has a lot of misinformation, mainly people put on antipsychotics have much worse symptoms and it needs to be for myself when i am psychotic to receive haldol as needed but i should not be put on it or kept on the antipsychotics like doctors think. i'm hearing auditory hallucinations again and breaking electronics . mirrors.

You speak often of the true self or true nature. Is it your opinion that a horse's true nature is to be wild and free or bridled and trained? It seems we believe our true nature can not be realized without training of some sort to bring out the hidden potential. Perhaps the true nature is just that we all have hidden potential. I would say the true nature of man is to discover the true nature of God! The true nature of man, or of horse, is then in reference to what is ultimately true and not just subject to finite potentials.

I had a P.A.R.T. license to restrain. After most patients who go through real psychotic reactions are drugged or/ or restrained- they say they would rather be restrained. The drugs disallow them to respond. We don’t usually do both(of course.) for safety reasons it isn’t appropriate protocol. But, yes afterwards most people prefer a cloth restraint to drugs. Why do we do it-because other wise they beat the hell out of us. (not fun or funny) violent offenders are not so great do cope with.

I know this video is old and I've never suffered through psychosis. However I have suffered through depression and I still have moments of apathy and pain in my life. I also have in the past and currently had to deal with and overcome anxiety. I took several of the poisons known as SSRIs and SNRIs. I have to wonder if the chemical lobotomies I took set back my path of healing back by several years.
