This is great. I have had reflux for years, but in last three months, it has gone to another stage. I have lost 9kg in a month, and despite being on PPI medication, I am in constant agony, with wind, burping, sternum pain, reflux into mouth, etc. A gastroscopy procedure showed no significant damage but a weak lower oesophagal sphincter. I was told I need to stop a huge range of foods, drink only water, and take medication for life. I cannot and will not accept this as a solution. Finding out about this new innovation has given me hope. The fundoplication and Linx options seem to bring as many issues as they solve, so this seems like a game changer. I will be speaking to my gastroenterologist in 10 days about this here in Finland, and if they don't even know about it yet, I'll be coming back to the UK for this if it is considered appropriate. These innovations and the surgeons who do this stuff are the true heroes of society.
Very useful video. Thank you! I was just wondering wherher the stitches can come undone over time and if this means the implant could migrate somewhere? My understanding is that with the LINX the scar tissue encapsulation keeps the device in place. Hiaral hernia recurence is a big problem with fundoplocations. Does this surgery suffer from the same rates of hiatal hernia recurrence?
sutures can fail, so it probably can still get undone if one is not careful. the standard prescription post Nissen is to not overeat, avoid vomiting and heavy lifting. I lead a very active lifestyle and lift heavy weights regularly, so I'll probably remain on PPI's for the rest of my life, unless some new, more fail proof, procedure comes along.
I'm supposed to have hiatal hernia repair and LINX implantation in (18) days. I'm wondering if I should postpone the surgery and try to get RefluxStop instead. I don't think I have the money to have it done in the UK, so I'm stuck hoping the FDA approves it in the U.S. soon.
I have a had a fundoplication 5 years ago. Complete rewolution of synptoms except i a have some degree of dumping syndrome and cant burp or vomit. I have lost some weight but i look incredibly young because of it.
What an informative video. I’m sure I will watch it several times. Has this been effective for LPR symptoms due to hiatal hernia? I would like to travel from California to have this done. Is the waitlist long?
Hi @LauraLynn, yes this surgery has been found to be effective for LPR symptoms as well as the 'classic' gerd ones! The wait list varies but we'd normally suggest that, after an initial consultation it can be a couple of months (but does vary from patient to patient)
Does it have any side effects like flundopication or linx And can you eat everything after surgery or you still have to look for not eating anything spicy or acidic
Hi ! I am Derek. I am 28 years old . I suffer for severe LPR. My main symptom of Acid Reflux is huge amounts thick gelatinous and transparent mucus production in my throat/larynx. Throat clearing 24 h per day 7 days of week, 365 days in year. It's really tiring. In mulit-channel 24 pH metry with impedance i had 521 epizodes of Reflux (421 gas epziodes) !!! I have question. Does RefluxStop can stop this huge mucus/phlegm production in my throat ? Can it help me with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux ? Thank you for your answer ! Best Regards ! Tired patient Derek
Hey Derek I have the exact same symptoms and it has greatly negatively affected quality of life. Have you also experienced bad taste in the throat as well?
@@Colton_Daly Very bad to hear it. Yes but really seldom I feel bad taste in my throat. My main symptoms are excessive mucus production in my throat/larynx , throat clearing, heartburn and regurgitation. I have also diagosed Hiatal Hernia 2-3 cm. What's worse, I'm slowly developing Barrett's esophagus, so I have to take action. I am considering Linx or RefluxStop with Hiatal Hernia repair.
I have LPR…. Is this helping? I live in Norway and here we don’t have that or LINX at all!!! I need to contact u guys to know how much is, otherwise I m going to Madrid to have ARMA thanks
Hi! Yes, a number of patients with LPR have had the refluxstop procedure with great success! You can contact our team here if you'd like to talk in more detail: refluxuk.com/contact/
Hello. Very interested in this procedure vs Fundo and Linx. Is there a limit to the hernia size that would mean this procedure isnt suitable? I myself have a 4cm HH and dont handle the ppi meds very well making this an interesting option
Hi Neil - there is no particular hernia size that is recommended for this operation. All reflux surgeries (LINX, Fundoplication, RefluxStop) are accompanied by a hiatus hernia repair, large or small.
Hi Ruth. Great question. One of the great aspects of the RefluxStop is that does not create a 'tightness' around the lower oesophageal sphincter, which many people have after a fundoplication procedure. As such, belching and bloating are not an issue following a RefluxStop.
I may not understand the definition of fundoplication. I didn’t realize one was performed with this procedure. Do patients experience the same restrictions after refluxstop that they do for the fundoplication surgeries? They aren’t able to lift much weight for ear of loosening the fundo? Can’t strain core muscles much etc…?
Hi. There's actually no fundoplication performed in a RefluxStop, although the the head of the stomach (fundus) is stitched to one side of the oesophagus. Among other things, this helps to reduce the 'angle of His' which can aid in reducing reflux symptoms. We normaly suggest that people start building up their exercise from weeks 1 or 2 (after discussing with their clinician), with most getting back to their normal exercise routines (including weight lifting etc) after a few months!
Hi i live in south wales uk. Could you please tell me do you do the reflux stop operation. At burcot hall hospital it would be easier for me to get there. Thanks mark
Hi Ruth, yes we are able to do the RefluxStop procedure at Burcott Hall with Mr Paul Super. Please feel free to get in touch with our team to discuss this further!
Hi there! The first part is indeed the hiatus hernia repair, which is in two parts: 0:00-4:15 = mobilisation of the oesophagus 4:20-6:10 = hiatus hernia repair The second part is the 'RefluxStop' part of the procedure: 6:15-10:20 = 'limited' fundoplication 10:25-13:00 = device insertion I hope that helps!
Hi there - great question! The RefluxStop implant uses medical grade silicon, which has had decades of study showing its biological compatitbility within the human body. No research thus far has shown a need to replace it, and it is not expected to ever be required. It is also visible upon X-Ray, meaning that if there are any concerns it is quick and inexpensive to check the implants positioning etc. Hope that helps!
I have a 2-3 cm hiatus hernia and with honesty I can say that I just can't live on a constat diet at 36 yrs old. I don't have a major problem just when eating a bit heavy it becomes a bit annoying over night. Still would like to find a solution for this. Would RefluxStop fix my symptoms? I'm an active person doing sports and stuff and would not want to restricted by this option. This has the same risks as classic fundoplications that it can get loose?
Hi there - thanks so much for your enquiry. Many of our patients who have had a RefluxStop or LINX have been similar to yourself - having to make significant lifestyle/diet changes at a young age and want a permanent solution without life-long medications. RefluxStop should definitely improve your symptoms. Regarding risks - there are of course risks and recurrence with every procedure, however it is worth noting that these decrease significantly with experience. The average NHS reflux surgeon performs 12 reflux surgery's a year (for private it is 7!) according to the most recent studies. Our surgeons perform 12 in the space of two weeks so their outcomes are far, far better than the average, whether that is for fundoplications, LINX or RefluxStop!
Refluxstop is different to fundiplication you can see in the video that they operate in a small ball on the outside of the stomach in a small pouch created from the stomach. Refluxstop is much better than Lynx. Refluxstop will probably be launched in the US next year so i guess for now private hospitals in Europe are the only options. In the UK Reflux UK and Spire Healthcare Group have started to use Refluxstop.
@@00_UU Implantica that have invented Refluxstop are going to file the FDA application this year and Implanticas CEO says it normally take 10-12 months to get approved. But it's not certain that they are going to launch next year and thats why i said probably.
Unfortunately this surgery is not providing the results that one would expect from a promising new treatment option. This can be seen seen in patients that have undergone this surgery in a fb group.
Actually they are saying the surgery was very helpful and many of them are off PPIs. Read all of the comments. No surgery has 100 percent effectiveness.
