Wiping their debt for ten years service would solve the shortages of doctors wouldn't it ? We'll be less reliant on overseas doctors filling the vacuum . Also , the financial reward would probably outweigh the return from a wage rise ? Maybe they'll be more receptive to a lesser pay rise in exchange ? Smacks of common sense to me ! Why on earth are we not training our own people to become doctors!? Is the BMA actively discouraging this to keep wages high!? When Bevan introduced the NHS after the war the most vehement opposition was from Doctors Unions frightened of their members losing money.

We could train many more of our own doctors if we didnt have a cap on places at medical school , its a nightmare to get a place in the first year of trying, the same applies to midwives and dentists too

My mum had a serious MCI and was rushed into hospital, two consultants saved her life, just. They were in the right place at the right time, the nurses had to manage the situation, and doctors were needed to monitor and provide care, drugs and treatment. There were no doctors on the floor. When I left I found thirty or so junior doctors outside on a picket line recording a tiktok dance video. I think my words to them were quite clear, My mum was in a ward gravely ill surrounded by nurses who first language is not english, with two consultants who are not ED doctors. Meanwhile selfish junior doctors doing the macarena outside the hospital and they are not the doctors of old, who put patients care over profit.

Labour and strike are synonymous.

That's what you get with a centralized healthcare system. Everyone's a part of the NHS, as a result everyone has similar concerns, and an NHS strike cripples the entire healthcare system. If the NHS was just one healthcare system among many, competition would either make the NHS improve things, or they would be gobbled up by a better paying competitor. Not saying any other system is perfect, but having one monolithic state run healthcare system was always going to be vulnerable to this. It's a massive leverage point. When I was working with the NHS, a lot of doctors I talked to were or had considered leaving for the US. They didn't have any debt to speak of, and the pay is a lot better. Good luck, Brits.

Why the hell are people who train to be in the NHS come away in debt.....They should be helped not punished for becoming nurses and doctors!!

UK Reforms approach to wiping student debt for doctor's sounds like a good solution, providing that there is a clause that if they leave or are dismissed before the 10 year point, then the whole of the debt is reinstated. This could and should be extended to dentists.

The British Army used to have retention bonus schemes for pilots and bomb disposal operators. Invariably, people would leave as soon as they received the bonuses. I think a graduated approach works better.

I believe, like the police and the military, doctors should not have the right to strike. Likewise qualified nurses. Antipodean doctors do come to the UK by the way.

Reform plan is to reallocate, re-prioritise, the existing government budget to afford their policies. £144bn out of the current government budget of somewhere north of 1,000 billion pounds a year. £30bn a year is saved by telling the BoE to do what other Central Banks do and not pay interest on QE debt which bailed out the banks. It's quite different to either Labour or the Tories funding plans.

At a company I worked for you could do you forklift licence but it was fixed so you was only qualified for that buisness, could the NHS England not do that?

And no one mentions that the Tories , which Labour didn't campaign against, had capped the number of British medical students training until very recently to 7,000 per year. That's why we are short of Doctors and GP's. British students were being denied medical courses.

Medicine is already a heavily subsidised course in University. Student debt isn't like USA where they are sky high. So shouldn't be wiped off after 10 years. May be 20 years would make more sense.

We always seem to have plenty of money for lockdowns, mass migration, illegal incomers, the EU's fat bureaucracies, the Ukraine, help to Gaza, women's childcare, loafer's choices to have welfare as a career choice, teaching helpers in schools to do work that the children should do, but we never seem to have a decent wage for our doctors and nurses.
