I started snowboarding again at 32 after not being on the slopes in 7 or more years. Did a bunch of research, got a board and bindings that fit me better, and then started looking at online lessons to gain my confidence back in riding. That said, this has been the most useful and best lesson I’ve seen on RU-vid yet. Used this on one of my first rides after a rough few days in general, and it worked perfectly and made my day. Thanks Malcom, you got a new subscriber.

Way back in time, 25-30 years old. Snowboarders were still getting yelled at by skiers, so it was a while ago. I was good enough to have fun, board where I wanted. 20 years later (2020, days before Covid took over), I got on a board, fell hard a few times, ot hurt WAY worse than I remembered, said, "I guess I am a snowshoer now." Tried again, had fun, and now drilling down into your videos to correct all the impurities in my posture, my turns, etc. At 51 years old having more fun than ever. Long winded way to say... THANK YOU! So helpful, so clear. (And snoeshoing is awesome for recovery days, cuz oh yeah, those happen a bit more often!)

Only four days on the snow last february and now ready for five more days but this time loaded with your teachings I hope to get closer to the goal. Liked and favourited. Love how the dog hilariously caught up with you around @8:00. Almost was worried you left it behind! Btw, are you using a traditional, flat, rocker/reverse, or mixed/hybrid camber board in this video? And would you recommend that same one for beginner to intermediate level boarders if they could only buy one?
@malcolmmoore

Thanks, appreciate it! I'm on standard camber here, early rise rocker is pretty good for beginners! Boards like the nidecker escape have that for instance, but so do alot of others!

Hey Malcom. Love your vids. Can't wait to get back on the mountain this winter. Quick question, for your up unweighted turns, are you applying any fore/aft movement when turning?
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 2 года назад
Not really a huge amount no, but it is there, and it varies depending on what I am riding. I use more aft pressure to generate power through the end of a turn, and I do use fore on steeper slopes to keep my board in contact with the snow. But I do find that if you are using your feet knees and ankles properly in a pedalling motion then it gives you the right amount of fore and aft anyways. That info can be found in my torsional twist video!

Great videos as always Malcolm. Gratitude 🙏 Could you maybe explain in another video how or when to use this method you’ve shown here with the others like opening and closing the door style turns where you use your arm and your knees twist to the direction your upper body turns. Is there a specific condition to use either, or a combination of both movements? And what about when you’re riding faster and having deep carves across the slope, same rules apply?
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 3 года назад
Yeah, I think that video will be soon for sure. But in the meantime this video just covers one of the easiest movements to get. Using just this movement will only take you so far though, namely wide open turns as I demonstrated here. As you move onto steeper terrain you can still use this movement but blend it with using your legs independently to get smaller turns. It's a good movement for 99% of riders, but it does put you in a weak position at the start of the turn, you are high up. This doesn't matter however as the first part of the turn, all you are doing is going with gravity. But it does somewhat mean you are just a passenger on the board. To ride more aggressively and to have the ability to be able to manipulate the arc of the turn whenever you want, that is where down unweighted turns have the edge, as you are in a low down strong position right from the start of every turn! Hope this makes sense for now!

Hi Malcom! Great video and this is how I will start my riding today to end up with the right posture straight away. Love that Indy is in the videos, but how does he get up the slopes? In the chair lift with you or running underneath? :)

Do you use the up un-waited turn technique with the "Garlands" board twist to get faster edge changes overall? Awesome content btw!!!
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 3 года назад
Nah for those you need to stay low so that you can really work your knees fast and independently! The up unweighted is kind of a beginner technique but done properly it works for most turns in most situations too, so whilst it cant be for everything, it is a good staple!

Hey Malcolm great video !! One question however, are you putting more pressure on your leading foot or is it more equally balanced ?
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 3 года назад
For here and the purpose of the demo it's pretty evenly balanced, but you can experiment with it for sure. As I carve more aggressively I definitely shift weight towards my back foot to help drive the board around. Weight to the front foot helps mostly with turn initiation, so is only really needed for tighter smaller turns on steeper terrain.
@henryouyang
@henryouyang Год назад
Would a pre-requisite for this be to first have your board aligned with your direction of travel? What would you tell people that are kinda sliding their edges down the mountain?

Hi Malcolm, me and my partner love your videos. You lever analogy just clicked with us both and has really helped us with our skidded turns. Am I correct in saying that the unweighted turns you use in this video is more appropriate for carving and torsional twist (levers) are better for skidded turns?
@anawara
@anawara 3 года назад
You're correct. When you do the torsional twist turns, you're not engage your whole edge in the snow to make the turn, as a result it'll be a skidded turn, very useful for steep terrain. Whereas with the unweighted turns, you're just engaging the entire edge, and as a result the board will carve around without skidding. You also don't really need to initiate the turn with your shoulder and knee. Literally sitting on that edge will turn the board, and you just gotta stay balanced!
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 3 года назад
So by just using this method you can achieve large radius carved turns, or large radius skidded turns too actually. The lever analogy is great for doing small radius turns but they dont necessarily have to be that skidded. I'm a little aware that I hate the word skidded because a skidded turn is usually a bad turn, but obviously you get to a point where a turn is too small to be carved, no matter how hard you try, that it will be in some way skidded! Anyway, I digress. Basically you can blend the two movements too, for instance on steeper slopes I usually initiate the turb with the up movement but as I come down I will lever my legs one at a time to decrease the turn radius and bring the board around quicker. Generally speaking, smaller turns think more of using levers, bigger turns more of just crossing over the board in one movement. I'm going to try and male a but more of a follow up on this explaining how the timing of this movement can be effective in other types of turns too, sorry, waffled on a bit there!

@listert2595 3 года назад
@@malcolmmoore This is extremely helpful! As beginners, the progression route from beginner turns to intermediate turns hasn’t been obvious to me and my partner and I imagine it’s because as a beginner you use a “skidded turn” as it’s just easier to learn and get you understanding your board. But it sounds like in reality, as you improve your technique, you naturally move from skidding and more into carving.

Hey Dan, have a look for my video on torsional twist, that really gets into the specific knee and ankle movements you can do, but then if you're still having problems it may be something to do with your posture, you might be moving your hips across the board to early, or late!

Up-unweighting is awesome, it can as physically challenging as down-unweighted if you want it to be, or just super chill and relaxing. As the board de-cambers while standing, you may even find yourself hopping from edge to edge. Thanks for being the only channel to cover unweighted turns, all of the other english channels I watch (mostly North American) never go into these details, it's helped me really dial in my carving this season. Funnily enough, my two stances have opposite strengths, regular being down-unweighted, so I've been splitting my practice into focusing on up-unweights a lot while riding regular. *edit* : re*cambers
@kiddkaos1
@kiddkaos1 3 года назад
Hey man I asked these on another video, but I was really dialling in my down unweighted turns today and it felt awesome. In what scenarios would you use down vs up unweighting? I was ready to just drop up unweighted turns altogether (apologies if he covers this in the video, only half way through as of writing)
@aiGeis
@aiGeis 3 года назад
@@kiddkaos1 Personally I found up-unweighting harder to do in deep-snow/powder conditions, so down-unweighting is name of the game there (also when in bumpy areas). I actually didn't catch his suggestion for when up-unweighting should be used, but I always enjoy doing them on steeper slopes and at high speeds as they feel more stable and are easier to lay down clean lines with. The sensation too is completely different, as you stand the board will boost you up via re-cambering, and it gives a weightless sensation if timed correctly. Try it out.
