Awesome job Eric. I've personally have done this at least a thousand times and I got great and consistent results each and every time. The only things that I did differently is that I used the corner of the stone to kill the edge and I stropped the razor on the firehose strop before going to the ilr. After that I did just 10 round trips on the smooth leather strop. I also used a Naniwa Snow White 8K Junpaku back in the day.

Josh hope your ZY shows up today! ;) Yeah Buddy! :) Great question Josh! I would recommend a Suehiro 1000/3000 here's a link amzn.to/2zQcfIb the 1000 side would allow you to Set the Bevel. The 3000 side would be the start of your honing progression and then get a Shapton 8000 here's a link amzn.to/2QgYooL, followed by the Shapton M5 12000 as a finisher here's a link for it amzn.to/2RFvB9V . In the long run I believe you will be happy with these stones and your still Under $130 USD ;) For an upgrade replacement for the Shapton M5 12000 stone you could look at the Imperia La Roccia 12000-15000 3x8" Finishing Stone here's a link ebay.to/2DRgVQT and here's a link for the Premium verison ebay.to/2EnPUWc food for thought :) Thanks so much for your great question and for your encouragement, and thanks for watching! ;) Have a good weekend! :) #Heart

What is the purpose of going back to the stone after using the firehose strop? I mean if you'd followed up the firehose that first time with 60 laps on leather, would it really have been likely to failethe treetopping test?
@AdventuresInWetShaving
@AdventuresInWetShaving 5 лет назад
Great questions RenegadeX! ;) You are correct the ZY Grandslam would have been fine and would have been able to treetop hairs no problem right after the first time on the stones! The main reason to use the firehose strop at this point is to polish the edge and then go back to the ILR finishing stone a second time to refine the edge even more. Hope that made sense please let me know if you have any other question. Thanks for your great questions and thanks for watching! :) Have a good weekend! :) #Heart

Hi I’m #new! I got my first full hollow dozo as a gift. However all I have for sharpening is a 6k (that acts more like an 8k) and a paddle strop with 16,000 grit compound and .5 micron cbn emulsion. I got a decent shave off of what I have but I can definitely see there being room for improvement. I have a lot experience sharpening knives but not razors. It tree topped and passed the hanging hair test, with very thin hair, all up and down the blade. I just noticed it has a touch of “frown” but again I got ok results. I’m thinking of getting a 16k later down the road. What’re your thoughts on my current set up and the frown?
@AdventuresInWetShaving
@AdventuresInWetShaving 5 лет назад
First Welcome Seth it's good to have you here! ;) Congrats on your first straight razor! Thanks for your great question! When sharpening your straight razor does the blade seat flat on your stone? or Does it rock back and forth? If it rocks you may need to do more of a rolling X-Stroke to work on the heel and toe of your blade to help take that frown out of the blade. This well be done with the spine touching your stone at the same time the edge is touching. You may or may not want to work on the spine to see if you can help straighten it out. If your interested you could check out this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V2JRzhK2gVs.html on straightening out a straight razor blade... and see if it's something you want to try. I put it on the inside of my cotton webbing and i’d like to ask if you wouldn’t mind doing a video teaching me what my routine should be when I refresh my razor. How many laps on the 12K Then do I take it straight to the chromium oxide? Then the cotton webbing /or Linen whatever people call it but mine is cotton webbing . Then the leather…. @AdventuresInWetShaving
@AdventuresInWetShaving 2 года назад
Great questions Stark night! ;) To answer your first question 2+ years ago I thought that was a necessary step in honing and sharpening a straight razor. Turns out this is unnecessary but is used by RU-vidrs to show that their straight razor isn't sharp before they sharpen it. As far as, stropping between using my finishing stone. I'll use the finishing stone the first time then strop and go back to it this helps remove the wire from the edge refining it. I hope that's helpful, please let me know if you have more questions. Nice review of the basics of honing, and you seem to get good results. However, if I want to learn the Dr. Matt method I would watch his videos. So why not mention Murray Carter, Keith Johnson, or some of the other leaders. Your edge test is weak; you could do some strop (spine leading) strokes (on the stone), and you spent too much time on the 8k, and too little time on the finisher. Also you did not mention chromium oxide prior to the fire hose and leather strop finish. No mention of a shave test (then how do you know how it performs)? Overall a mediocre lesson for sub-par results. But hey, if it works for you then more power my shave brother! P.S. Chinese razors are a waste of money (Thanks but no thanks)!

Thanks for taking the time to watch this video, Honu! I've never watched any of Murray Carter's videos (I'll have to look him up), and I don't watch Keith Johnson's videos either. I'll have to check both of them out. Thanks for your comment and again thanks for watching! :) Have a good weekend, take care and stay safe my friend! :) #Heart

I thought you weren’t supposed to kill the Edge when you’re refreshing your razor????

Great question Mike! ;) I have done it both ways, and I see no advantage to killing the edge when you're refreshing an edge. So don't kill that edge! Thanks for all your great questions and comments! :) #Heart
