Refurbishing A Japanese Plane Adjusting Hammer

See how to refurbish a 215 gram Japanese plane adjusting hammer using only hand tools to make the handle. I try an experiment refurbishing the hammer head by seasoning it like you would cast iron. I won this hammer on Ebay. Only thing is the hammer head had a little rust on it and the handle easily slips out of the hammer head. I spent a little time over the last couple weekends working on making a new hammer handle from a small log of olive wood. The tool maker’s name inscribed on the bottom is Yama.

I see you also have altruistic neighbors... (0:30) also thank you for mentioning the weight of the hammer head.

+Lemongrasspicker thank you! It's hard to find some larger pieces of olive that are straight. Luckily the handle is small.

Joe. Check out the website "Tools From Japan". I found two smaller hammer on there reasonably priced, and shipping is fairly reasonable, about $12 US from Japan for one hammer. They might be a little heavier than you are looking for. I had to search for "hammer" to find them. For some reason they are not under the link "Hammers". Here are the hammers. Octagon - about $17 - www.toolsfromjapan.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=344_369_469_474&products_id=806 Square - about $19 - www.toolsfromjapan.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=344_369_470_471&products_id=795 I have ordered some saws, a small hammer (different style), a couple cheap planes. The service was good, shipping fairly quick from Japan. At the time the prices were much cheaper than buying from US retailers. Now some of the saws are about the same price before shipping. I bought most of what I wanted to keep the shipping costs down. The more I bought the less shipping cost per tool, up to a point. Also check out www.japanwoodworker.com/search?q=hammer&button=search. The have 4, 5 and 9 oz hammers. I hope that helped.

Glad I could help. FYI - Japan Woodworker is owned by Woodcraft so if you have one locally you can have them ship it to the store to save on shipping.

I love going from the trunk to the finished product by hand. It's a real connection with reality :) You got a good black there! Nice Yama and nice finishing !

+Daniel Solowiej thank you Daniel! It's more work to do it that way. You're right though, it makes you look at how the grain is going and decide if you can split the wood instead of cutting it. A gentleman below talked about a froe. I might look into one.

Thanks for the shoutout on your video too. Ha. My name is basically pronounced (i)magination without the "i". Really like seeing how you did the layout for the shape of the handle and the process for treating the head. Good stuff!

Nice video. Love the olive wood handle. I picked up a used Japanese hammer. The handle is so crooked I could hammer around a corner. Trying to decide if I want to use oak again or something else. I doubt I'll do any really pounding with it so probably something purty will do. I really like the sitting in Japanese woodworking. Sadly if I sit on the floor like that my legs go to sleep.
