Thank you SO much. A sweet older lady I met at the library just gave me her mother's spinning wheel too! This same style spinning wheel actually 😅 She insisted I couldn't repay her except by giving it a loving home where it will be used 😭 so sweet so no complaints here but it definitely needs some love, it's been just hanging out by her piano for a long time. This video is my new best friend. You're amazing.

Hi, with your help I have a Ashford traditional spinning that works. I have taken it apart reglued the hub. Got a new hub pin. I now know how my spinning wheel works. The wood looks good with linseed oil soaked in. I feel happy. It's so smooth no clunks or bangs. Yippee 😊

After watching this I took another look at my ashford traditional spinning wheel that I bought used a year and a half ago when I first started learning to spin. It is exactly like this one! It has everything except bobbins which I got ordered from my local fiber shop. The owner said I had gotten a lucky find. It has the same tension knob and leather strap on the foot and everything. I hadn't named her like a lot of other spinners do. But since she must be from the 70s too, I'm naming her Flower Girl. I loved her any way, but you made me realize how special she is!

I saw a spinning wheel for 10 euros (about 11 dollars) at the thrift store yesterday and decided to get it this morning. Just took it home and figured out that it was the same as the one in the video. Its got everything, including spools, the tension knob and a lazy kate (still need to figure out how that works tho) and it works too! I just need to clean it up and replace the drive band and the leather attachment thingy. It sounds like I got really lucky and I can't wait to learn how to spin. Thanks for the info, looking forward to watching your other videos to learn how to use it. You guys have great energy, very catchy :)

Great video -- I remember when I received my hand-me-down Ashford Traditional -- also a 1970's -- it actually had a nail jammed into the wheel instead of the proper pin it had served several years as a home decoration and a battle field for my son-in-law as a young boy for his plastic army men -- thank goodness I too had a very helpful assistant (my hubby) and he was able to get the nail out, glue the wheel hub together so a new pin would work and he actually sacrificed an old belt to make me a new leather connector -- this was before I found the maintenance kit and I absolutely love my wheel and the fact it has a history.

I just found a vintage 1970's Ashford Traditional at a yard sale today for $2! I found your channel and Love it! You're so positive and up beat ☺️. The video on refurbishing your wheel is exactly what I needed. I can't wait to watch more! I learned to spin over 30 years ago on my sister's Ashford Traditional, it was perfect for a newby. I stopped spinning when I had kids and returned my sister's wheel. The one I got today isn't complete but in really decent shape and the wheel turns easily. It needs the Fly wheel, bobbins, tension rod drive line and leather strip to attach the treadle but I'm looking forward to refurbishing it and start spinning again. I have to relearn everything though 😉. I spent $150 on parts and a maintenance kit but after it's done it'll be a nice usable wheel. ☺️. I'm a knitter and weaver too and so glad I found your channel!

Hello. Thank you so much for this video, it has been really helpful. I also have a very similar Ashford wheel. I wonder if you can advise how I can repair my hub. You mentioned that the hubs sometimes split along the centre line, mine has done this and there is loads of play in the wheel. How might I go about restoring it please. I have a picture of it but can’t see how to post it on here. The split is quite large, approximately 5mm all the way around. Any advice you could give would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 3 года назад
I think the best thing is to open it up, sand off any rough spots, use a good quality wood glue, and clamp it back together. I resist adding anything like a screw to secure it because it could put it off balance. I hope that helps! 💖🧶

Just found your channel. My daughter wants to learn to spin and I have a chance to buy one of these for 250 dollars. It definitely needs the leather strap and probably other work. I’ve not seen it yet. How much did it cost you to restore yours if you don’t mind me asking. We know absolutely nothing about spinning but she’s really wanting to learn. Thanks!

Hi Sally! Thank you! The drive band on a single drive spinning wheel is fairly simple. I tie it round the drive wheel and then around the flyer. I secured it with a double overhand knot and that's it! Easy peasy 🐔 squeezy! 💕

Keep on the look out, Ashford wheels pop up a lot! I bet you'll find one before long. 😊 The cardigan was a project I did last spring. The pattern is "Harvest" by Tin Can Knits. Are there any marks or brands on the wheel that would tell if it's an ashford? Im going today to buy one and it looks like an ashford traditional but I do not see the spinning wheel brand.

I have had this same wheel that I got at a fiber festival around 1998. Mine has split at the hub just like you said, right down the middle. Can this be glued and clamped? (It also went too fast to see just how you got the wheel off..lol.
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 2 года назад
We had to pry the pin out of the hub and slide the wheel off the shaft. I think you should be able to glue and clamp yours together, but you can also contact a wheel repair expert or check with Ashfords to make sure you are doing a solid repair.

Not sure if you are still answering questions from this thread but my hub pin came loose and I cannot blindly find the hole in the crank shaft to pin it in place. And I cannot remove the wheel crank shaft to clean it. I saw that Mark had a difficult time pulling the wheel shaft do you have any tips or tricks? Mine is stuck tight. Thanks
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 2 года назад
If anything is stuck that should be able to move, we usually give it a little oil and come back in a few hours or the next day. If you are having trouble finding the hole for the pin, Mark put the pin in as far as it would go and then slowly turned the wheel around while wiggling the pin against the metal until he could feel it catch on the hole. Then it was a matter of wiggling it back into place. It took some patience but it worked. When it was stuck and he couldn't get it out, it was a job for pliers and some leverage. I hope you get your wheel back in tip top spinning shape! 🧶🐑✨

I'm so glad I found your video:) I took up spinning over 30 years ago, and was able to purchase a used ashford traditional wheel through a Guild I belonged too. I used it a great deal, but as things happen, life, family, work got in the way, and my wheel became a decoration in my Living room, until...my grandsons', very young and visiting at the time, played with it and broke the Fly wheel and one of the bearers. It was put away for years, (my youngest grandson is 23 now:) Now retired, I've pulled it out, I ordered the parts, including a few more bobbins and maintenance pkg and after watching your video, realize my wheel, although it needs some cleaning, and moisturizing, is in decent condition and I feel confident I can clean, and repair it. I'll let you know how it goes:) I can't wait to start spinning again, and re-joined the Guild in my area too:)

Hi wonderful job on restoring the wheel!. I do have a question though. My granny has a old spinning wheel she has no idea what brand the wheel is or how old it is. And there dosent seem to be any names or numbers on it to help. How can I find out what the wheel is?

I'm in the process of refurbishing an Ashford Traveller from the late 90s. It's been interesting. I couldn't find a woodworker that would touch it. They all said, "I don't do spinning wheels." Apparently wooden things that spin scare them. That made me nervous but I decided to try fixing it myself. The worst problem was the hub had separated into two parts. From looking at the grain it seemed like the hub had been made in one piece and sawn in two. That seems like a strange way to do it. I made one big mistake. The wood hadn't been cared for and had spots I feared were mold. When the wood was sanded to remove the spots it removed the marks for which spoke goes in which hole. I think Ashford assembled the drive wheel and then drilled the hole in the hub for the crank shaft. The way I glued it back together the hole is slightly off center now. That makes the drive wheel wobble by 1/4 inch. I hope that doesn't cause problems. Wish me luck.
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 3 года назад
The wobble might be frustrating, oh no! I went through a similar repair with my Ashford Elizabeth. I hope it spins ok for you! 🐑

Great job! I am working on refurbishing my first Ashford traditional, but the wheel has separated a tiny amount. Everything still spins like a champ though. You had mentioned being careful of that in the video. Do you have any recommendations for refurbishing the wheel itself?
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 3 года назад
The original wheel on my Ashford Elizabeth had completely come apart and then someone tried to fix it with hot glue. It is a mess and doesn't spin true. I have a salvaged wheel from a Traddy that fits, so my Elizabeth is a bit of a franken-wheel currently. I plan to separate the hub, scrape out the bulky glue, apply actual wood glue, and let it set properly in a clamp. I think that's the way to go, but I'm really not an expert wood worker, so if you try that, maybe get a second opinion? 💕

Back about 10 years ago I bought a 1970s Ashford Traditional then later replaced her with a matchless. I recently got her back out, cleaned her and have been attempting to spin. Adjusting everything is so difficult and she wobbles like crazy (neither is new for this wheel) however my biggest issue is once I start going the end of the bobbin with the brake band slips off and the brake band comes off and everything comes to a halt. Not sure what is going on to cause this but it’s like the rod the bobbin slides onto isn’t quite long enough and barely goes through the leather piece it’s held on. Any suggestions? Thank you
@janeelow911
@janeelow911 Год назад
Quick question. Did you have to replace the bearing in the top of the conrod? The bearing for that year isn't available, it sits in the conrod just in the interior of the crank bolts. I found a solution a plastic bobbin from my sewing machine. I separated the bobbin in half, a little sanding and it work like a washer, also the right inside diameter for the crank. So far so good! But I would be interested in other folks solutions. Thank you

Watching this episode for the first time today and it got me to thinking. I purchased my 1987(ish) Ashford Scholar a couple years ago. It had not been used regularly but had no rust and was in working order. It still spins fine and I have lubricated the appropriate parts once, but I have never done anything to the wood. Should I take the whole thing apart to condition the wood?
@JillianEve
@JillianEve 3 года назад
I think it all depends on the shape it is in. If it seems to be in good shape, continue doing regular maintenance on it, but you shouldn't need to take it apart. Happy spinning!
