Today I'm working on converting an old horse trailer that has a divider and half doors to something that will work as a horse trailer BUT also, a trailer that I can fit a water tank in as well. In the video I'll fabricate a new door, remove the old divider, do a little rough upholstery, replace the lights and wiring, and a little bit of this that and the other ;)
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions you might have!

Looks great! However, I think the middle divider should still be there (at least able to install/remove as needed) as it provides side support for the animal(s) while being trailered.

Recommendation; Always run TWO wires to EACH light. Grounding to the Body will result in far more issues. The expense of an extra wire is far less than even the time to troubleshoot. Multiple metal types, rust, corrosion, vibration, etc. all contribute to poor/no grounding. Nearly all trouble with lights is due to grounding to the "body" etc. -
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Yes, that is good advice. I knew the biggest thing to check with trailer lights is the ground. But I hadn’t considered a separate wire. 😊👍
@rob8823
@rob8823 Год назад
Other side of the coin on this.. locktite and some silicone over a clean ground connection.. only half the future wire tracing issues...
@traveler7249
@traveler7249 Год назад
@@rob8823 It is much easier to test for continuity of a wire than to troubleshoot Whish body/frame panel has lost connection with the adjacent. -- Sometimes the light has a good connection but the part is not well connected to the next part. There may be several parts in the line before it connects back to the ground. - each connection can fail. -- a bad connection is easily remedied by just running an additional wire. One wired is already run and the second wire takes little space. -- Saving a few pennies is a false economy when standing on the side of a road troubleshooting an intermittent connection.

Ideally, you should reinstall the centre divider. An animal, especially a horse, needs to be secured whilst in transit otherwise you may get to the end of your journey to find that the horse has a broken leg. This is why livestock trailers such as an Ifor Williams Trailers one has gates/dividers inside to prevent unnecessary movement of sheep, pigs or cattle or a trailer is filled enough of the animals that they are unable to slide around (not overcrowding however). All of these methods are intended to protect an animal whilst in transit.

Thank you and may God bless you as well! The sunken greenhouse is still there. But I do not use it as much as I had thought. Mostly for seed starts prior to the garden and also to being in some tomatoes and peppers from the main garden in buckets to keep a few things going through the winter. Great refurbishment on the trailer. On trailer tires...I can recommend Goodyear Endurance. Not cheap but darn good and USA made. I have them on my travel trailer. Carlisle tires I've had before on my travel trailer and they were good but made overseas. My car hauler came with Goodride tires on it and I've not had a problem with them. But I do keep them inflated and inspect them regularly as their on the lower end of the trailer tire spectrum.

Another insightful video, thanks for sharing this today. Thoughts for the wheel bearings, when you are sourcing the replacement parts, look for hubs that are equipped with grease fittings. Most often found on boat trailers for keeping water out of submersible hubs when unloading or loading boats from water. Useful in dry climates for flushing grit infused grease out of seals. When you removed the center post did you add a horizontal support above the door opening or is it sufficiently stiff. Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peace brother.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Thanks! The zyrc fitting hubs I had not considered but was aware of them with not trailers. My plan is when we get the tires and I’ve got the wheels off, im going to inspect the bearing and track. And if there is no pitting and everything is shiny I’m going to just decrease them. I’ve heard some of the older ones, if still in good shape, are built a bit better than some of that replacement ones. But I guess I see in a week or so…haha As for the center post. The horizontal roof support is sufficiently still. I could do a pull-up on it with no flex. And it served mostly just a mounting point for the divider, and door latches, versus something structural. And may you and your family have a blessed week too!
@catgynt9148
@catgynt9148 Год назад
@@homesteadonomics Too true Joe, the older “Timkin” bearings are much better than a lot of the ones coming from Pacific rim countries. A friend’s dad used that style of hub on his landscaping trailer. His son now has his dad’s business and a 30+ year old trailer with original wheel bearings. Here in NE Ohio our roads are usually salty from November through spring rains. I managed to get 26 good years out of my Ranger until the frame became “crispy” and could not be safely lifted for service. Peace brother

A) How'd I miss this when it first came out? Bad youtube. B) you might consider having a lip on the upper door to keep the lower door closed then add someway to lock the upper door. That way the trailer is secure. To me that's more if your out traveling and have to pull over somewhere or stop for the night. C) Of course you had the aluminum trim :P D) Trailer looks good.

Pretty cool, I am in the middle of renovating a horse trailer we have that had been previously renovated by someone else and it was all wrong. We're tearing out the centre divider and turning it into a 3 slant load trailer mainly because I have a monster horse that we rescued and now that he's healthy and put on weight he no longer fits into his slot. We want the horses to be comfortable and don't need the tack room because everything just sits in the bed or cab of the truck normally in case we have to go help with a rescue or something. Many thanks for sharing and awesome for Marley and her mustang, the wife and I have two as well we're working with.

I know this is just a small bumper pull trailer. One VERY NICE update I made to a friends 27ft 3 horse trailer was to add reverse lights to the trailer. I don't know how many times we arrived at a show when it was dark out. Adding a simple relay to the reverse & continuous power connectors made a nice addition to be able to see when you are backing up.

@@homesteadonomics Just make sure that you have power to your trailer plug.....for some reason my 7 pin plug didn't have power....it was just a matter of hooking up the wire in the fuse box under the hood. on the trailer side, find the reverse wire in the distribution box. use the reverse wire as your switch leg, and then supply power to the lights through the relay, and run your wires back. The hardest part is finding a good place to hide/protect the wires to the back. I while you are running wire, pull an additional power wire.....this will allow you to hook up a 12v fan, and a wireless camera for inside the trailer.....or a reverse camera.

I would be mildly concerned about the lack of confinement. If the horse in the back can move several feet sideways, they are more likely to hit the sides harder. It also means there is room to fall down.

@@livesoutdoors1708 You answered your own questions by stating horses. Multiple horses/animals act as buffers to one another. A singular animal needs support or have its space limited by the use of internal dividers/gates. It is not good practice to transport an animal without securing them. Especially a horse.

This is the best and cleanest horse trailer mod I've seen. I'm gutting 2 trailers to construct mobile bars out of, and I really like your idea for the rear door with the full swinging one. Makes loading larger objects, including kegerators and kegs easier than having to squeeze them past the divider.

The wide door is such a bonus for water hauling but I figure that if you need to get more hay and feed than you truck can carry this is also a great addition. Did you need to weld anything in to strengthen the door opening or was the upright yo remove not really a weight bearing piece. @homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Thank you! And yes the floor decking is solid in closely spaced steel angle members. The reason the plywood is so bad in the old doors and the upholstered section is that the wood was welded into the door and they never added drain holes. And the upoholsted section kind of has that same issue. With the water coming in along the wall and getting trapped within the vinyl fabric and the plywood.

I do not do horses or camping but want to turn it into a toy hauler along with a cargo trailer since I buy abandoned storage units and the $350, I spent buying a working trailer is cheaper than buying one made specifically for hauling cargo.

are there no Reflaction Sticker or Plate Laws where you live? i would put Reflector bands arround and red ones on the back so it can be seein without a light on it standing somewhere.

There are, and I have to put a couple on the rear corners that were removed when I was painting. But you an another person reminded me. So thank you😊🙏

Very clean-up grades. What is the gross weight and net weight of your trailer?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
You know what….I have no idea🤦‍♂️😂. I do know it’s got 3500lb axles and springs. But I couldn’t tell you what it is total weight
@davej7458
@davej7458 Год назад
@homesteadonomics Thank you. If I'm thinking right it must be 7,000 GVW or less. With no CDL license needed to operate if the truck and trailer total weight 26,000 pounds or less.

@@davej7458 He could tow a trailer 3 Xs that size and Not need a CDL.. A CDL is for commercial trucks not ranchers ect type equipment. Totally different catagory.

Another entertaining and informative video. Not to be rude but I suggest more practise on the welding work...and I happen to have some welding work you could do (strictly for your own benefit, of course!) around my place. On a serious note, I always appreciate the work you do and the time you take to provide us with these videos with so much instructional benefits as well. Mike

I don’t mean to be, but that divider is there for a reason. It “swaddles” the horse while in transit. One wrong turn, or evasive maneuver, and you’ve got a horse with broken legs.
