Refuse Scapegoating Violence - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, this Sunday, we hear the story of the woman caught in adultery from the eighth chapter of John. René Girard thought that this story was particularly clear in showing the dynamics of what he called the scapegoating mechanism. And in the response of Jesus to the violence of the mob, we see the glory of God, who does not sanction this scapegoating frenzy, but rather meets the misery of our sin with his mercy.

Thank you bishop barron, I was a victim of a physical and sexual abuse by a catholic run Institution as a very young woman by a doctor and covered up by church... I learned after a lot of pain in my heart through a brilliant monk to forgive the church to forgive the person also but not the crime. I'm so grateful I did as he's passed on now and I pray for his soul, we are all sinners and through my forgiveness I was able to then see my own flaws and sins I love Jesus and my catholic faith now more than ever but I am now more protective of myself and my faith.... Prayers for your good health and for the health of our clergy ..🙏🙏🙏🙏

I am thankful to Our sweet Lord that you are healed, though still hurting from a great injustice against you as a very young person by someone providing services on behalf of the church. That you can step out of that abuse and still seek Christ and indeed embrace him , is a great sign of your faith. Heaven awaits you when your time comes. God bless you Linda!!

St. Augustine said "all that's left is Misera et Misericordia" , Misery and Mercy. That's what the temple meant to be. The Glory of God dwells there, a place where the Misery of our sin meets the Misericordia, the Mercy of God, and may each one of us be an instrument of that meeting. Thank you, Bishop Barron.

@@jjcm3135 absolutely. Of you prefer to hear a fine five hour radio program dedicated to him I'd recommend CBC Radios "the Scapegoat: insights into the ideas of Rene Girard." These are freely available on the internet. Otherwise, for books, his crowning achievement is considered "Things Hidden since the Foundation of the World" although Im of the opinion that "Battling to the End" is his most important work. I always love Bishop Barron's preaching since he is able to me back to the time of Jesus. I recently discovered that the woman in the story was St. Mary Magdelene, as confirmed by early Church founding fathers. I recently saw her with the Blessed Mother accompanying Jesus to Calvary, as shown in the movie "The Passion of Christ." The majority of Jesus' Apostles fled the scene due to fear of the Jews, but Mary Magdelene stood by at the foot of the Cross. I believe Jesus transformed her heart, and she was on fire for Him and no longer had any fear of death. I experienced the same manner with my deep conversion, having led a promiscuous life. I now have an immense love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. I now have a fear of committing sins than death.
@maryfitz7174
@maryfitz7174 2 года назад
Not sure this woman was Mary Magdalen, as what is written about Jesus’ interaction with Magdalen is that he “freed her from demons”.The woman in this story is unnamed, and Jesus tells her to “go and sin no more”.... but that adds all the more encouragement... she could be anyone of us,...ALL of us. Jesus offers mercy without price to each and to all who would accept it. Perhaps the only thing Jesus would ask is that we in turn pass it on . Be at peace and be joyful... forgiveness, mercy, and perfect love are yours through Jesus.

Every time I hear this Gospel…And I might add many times as I am 82 years old, I agree with you Bishop that other men were most likely laying in wait and watching from afar ( not too far) in order to catch this woman in adultery. I think about the man who hired her for the hour …is he not equally guilty? What does the law say about him? What does Jesus say about him or what does Jesus say to him ?

I've been following Dinesh D'Souza discussion of Dante's inferno. He makes the point that each of the damned blames their predicament on someone else and gain satisfaction at the thought that such a person is suffering a greater he'll than they are themselves. What an insight on our tendency toward scapegoating! How much better, as George Herbert puts it, "Though I sin, I weep! Still I creep to the throne of grace!"

Perhaps the fact that you are "wishing" you could become a believer is actually the still small voice of God calling to you, "I love you. Come home." Bishop Barron often quotes St. Thomas Aquinas who famously said, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, Lord." So true. Also, none of us comes to belief by "getting ourselves" there - it is not something we ourselves do, but the work of the Holy Spirit in us. OUR part of it is to be open to the Spirit's leading, to suspend our disbelief, to suspend our human will and hubris in trying to figure it all out before we believe. If it could all be figured out, it wouldn't be faith! 🙂 "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." ~ Hebrews 11:1 Pray daily that you might be open to God's leading, and then be amazed by what He will do in your life! I'm praying for you right now. 🙏 God bless you!

Scapegoating is the mechanism where the mob looks for culpability in another for its own corruption. Ironic, another "mob" in John's Gospel called for Christ's head as well. Maybe that is why the story finds its way into the Fourth Gospel - the parallel of the mob justice for the woman and the mob justice Jesus experienced.

Another wonderful and insightful homily, bishop. Thank you. Though as a woman I do notice that although it takes 2 to commit adultery, the man is not brought to the temple and condemned by the scribes and Pharisees...perhaps another aspect of scapegoating, where we put ourselves in the position of judging who is guilty and who is innocent instead of leaving that up to God.

Our priest talked about this in his homily. "Where is the man?" It's a good take on the story.

Someone said that actually Jesus drew on the ground the pictures of a ring and a shepherd stick. The things that Juda (patriarch of Juda clan) gave to Tamar as pledge.... The Jews understood it's meaning and left. And Jesus is right. Not the woman caught in adultery but you men are at fault. And Jesus surely brought mercy amidst this misery.

Whenever I read this passage, I am acutely aware that they did not bring the man to Jesus, just the woman. That tells me that they were more interested in trapping Jesus rather than true justice in the law. No one commits adultery alone, yet they do nothing towards the man.

Another great homily. Many Thanks Bishop Barron! I've experienced the violence of the mob summer before last and violence never accomplishes good. God's way seems to strange to us...but that strangeness verifies itself as divine.
