*Edit: 0:14 A viewer pointed out my error in describing my previously owned Mk2 Elas as XELs. They were NOT, in fact, XELs, as the XELs had two cones, rather than just one. In fact, I've seen images of the XEL, and should have put two and two together, myself. But I digress...

This is all the information I know about the Rega Ela lineage. If you notice any errors, or have something to add, please leave a comment below. Btw - I'm not sure if they're pronounced ELLA or EEE-La, but since there's only one L in the name, I use the latter pronunciation. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.
Happy listening!

Nice video. I still have my Ela Mk1 from when I lived near the REGA factory in Southend, England. The Mk3 were a birthday gift from the wife because she knew how much I loved the Mk1, I still prefer the Mk1 to the Mk3 which is a little brighter. And yes, the bass is awesome considering the size of the driver.

A good and informative video. I bought a pair of Mk 1s in 1990 driven by a Naim Nait 2 and this set up still runs today. I love the Rega ELA sound so much, I bought another pair driven by an A&R Cambridge A60 as a set up for our study. I see both systems lasting me a lifetime.

Have a pair of 1.5s bought in the mid 90s. Rega styled them ELA so I have always named them by reading out each letter, so EE - ELL - AYs but I have no idea how Rega pronounced the name. Excellent speakers, not the deepest bass so these days you might add a sub.

Yes, they're definitely very good speakers. I wish I still had my XELs, to be honest, but I can't keep them all. :) (I currently have 7 pairs of speakers at home in my tiny apartment. hahaha) Thank you for your comment. Cheers!

Nice overview. I ran 1.25's for many years and loved them.

I had a pair of mark 1 about 20 years ago driven by a Naim Nait 2 a.plifier and a Rega 2 turntable in a very small apartment. Very enjoyable.

The XEL I'm familiar with is a DiAppolito configuration with the tweeter between to of the Rega 4 in drivers. Also about briightness. Early speakers were mainly voiced with vinyl playback not digital.

@@tonyfafoglia2927 yes, I've seen that model, too, so found it odd that mine had an XEL label on the back. It always made me wonder if they were somehow mis-labled, and since there's so little info out there on them, i could never figure out what's what. But I figured the d'Appolito versions were the actual XELs - after I made and posted this video, that is. Thanks for chiming in. Cheers!

Hi again! First off - apologies on my previous reply. I used my phone, and for some reason the typing got all messed up and I didn't notice. I was just going through some old photos, and happened to get to my old Rega Mk2 pictures. I happened to find a pic of one of the labels, and it does NOT have the XEL moniker on it, so I'm not 100% sure now why I thought it DID say that. It's possible the previous owner listed them that way, but who knows! Anyhow, glad you flagged it for me. I'll add a small edit to the description. Thanks!

Nice Video.Great info I recently got a pair of I think MK II Elas from the original owner. They were demo'd on his all Rega setup and sounded Great. When I got them home I hooked them up to my Musical Fidelity X-A2 and SMSL d300 DAC and could not believe how they disappeared so easily. They sound great to my ears, open and transparent and lots of detail and space. I dabble in DIY and couldn't help but have a look at the Crossover. a very simple affair of just three parts. I just had to upgrade them with better quality parts especially the Solid Iron Core inductor on the Woofer. This upgrade proved worthwhile with a greater refinement and texture to sound so far in just the first few listens. Ive actually ordered some capacitors to install as bypass on the Tweeter caps to see is any further gains can be eeked out. Tim

Yeah, those MkII's are something... I can understand why you would be enamoured with them. I think it's great that you're doing what you can to extract the best out of them. I'm tempted to dabble, myself, but on the other hand, I don't want to inadvertently wreck any classics! lol If you remember, please let me know what improvements you reap from the tweeter caps. I'd be curious as to your observations. Cheers!

Just an update and some further thoughts. I've installed the Miflex Capacitors I ordered to bypass the Capacitors in the tweeter. These are only maybe 10 hours in but have opened things up significantly. Really worth doing. The treble was a little strong after the original replacement with Mundorf MCap Evo. Perhaps I need to install a Resistor in series to compensate for the undoubted Lower ESR of the mundorf but the Treble is I think settling down with more hours (or maybe Im getting used to them) at this stage If I was to look at the Crossover again I might just change the Coil on the Woofer / Mid (It plays all the way up to 5K Hz +) and maybe leave the tweeter Cap and Coil but Install the Miflex bypass cap. Overall Im very happy with the Elas and the upgrades have taken them to another level. When I bought these a digital source was used (cd / Dac + Wav files ) but the last thing the Guy did was to Play Vinyl from his Rega 2 turntable - Holy Smokes. Completely different Sound and Completely different speakers. The Elas were Made I think for Vinyl.

Yeah, they're among the favourites I've owned (owned quite a few pairs now, too). Paper drivers sound so natural to my ear.

I haven't actually listened to the Apexes, so I can't say one way or the other. Sorry about that! I'm sure the Apexes are good, though! :)

I wish I could help, but I'm not aware of drop-in replacements. I actually find their tweeters to be ok, although a little hot. I hope someone reading this can help direct you to the tweeters you're looking for.
