Would be interesting if you could pick up a cheap Cherry Audio acrylic platter and hear your opinion on it. 😉 Jim 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ☺

Glad you like this. My son in law has a P1 and I’ve just picked up a 12mm glass platter and new felt mat for his birthday. As a former Planar 3 owner, I knew it would be a good upgrade. If he wants to upgrade again later, a Rega dealer has recommended the Goldring E3 as a straight swap, being the same weight and height as the Carbon. I suspect the Elys 2 is perhaps a step too far for his budget.

Goldring E3 is an excellent cartridge 💜

I’d use an acrylic platter from SRM Tech, though the glass platter is better than the plastic one that comes with the P1.

I went for the Pro-ject T1 It's has the glass platter, is also basic and cheaper.

Hi thanks for your reply, it’s very low level hum and noticeable either head phones on and only hear it as the arm goes towards end of record play, other people have notice it on forums, I changed as spare om5 abd it went away , I have bought vm95sh to test and that’s ok , so I change the Elyis with that when it wears out . Thanks regards mark

Hi great informative video, do you pick up some hum with your elyis2 cartridge as goes towards the end of play if your record, does mine on my p3 . Thanks mark

My Elys never hummed thankfully. I think humming is often caused by something needed to be grounded properly. did have a problem many years ago with a strathearn turntable, a pretty awful thing that hummed unless I touched one of the cartridge wires (am not recommending this as a good course of action for you!). I also had a subwoofer that hummed once due to a ground loop issue

Can the rega p1 take this glass platter upgrade as well as a 260g platter weight?

I have the same glass platter and use it with the felt mat it came with. What platter mat were you using, and have you considered changing it out for something else?
@theebayhififanatic6002
@theebayhififanatic6002 2 года назад
Hi, I was using the felt mat - I have bought a white acrylic mat, I think from Cherry Audio that’s been sitting around for a while and never got around to doing an A:B comparison - will get around to it one day and report back!

@@theebayhififanatic6002 Thanks for the quick reply. When you do test your white acrylic mat, would you replace the felt mat, or put it on top of the felt mat? I am wondering if putting two smooth, hard surfaces directly against each other is a good idea.

Vinyl records need a solid base as vibrations distort the sound. Having the motor connected (with sticky pads) under it does not help running with the lid opened does not help a light platter certainly does not help a solid platform is essential. The relationship the friction between stylus and record is critical the difference between a good sound and a great sound. Any vibration the slightest vibration will effect the friction and the sound will be compromised but can you actually hear it? Why do Audio Technics use metal for platters its heavy solid and its DENSE perfect for vinyl as glass can be to, the heavier the denser the better the bass should be but there has to be a point of diminishing return and benefit. The P3 glass platter costs £175 (went up this week by £25) for 12mm the P2 10mm only costs £121 and the P6 16mm costs a whopping £265 !!!! Seriously where do they get their figures & costs from? I wonder if there are actually any scientific tests and results as to what is really the best value and what if any difference each makes? That is why I "upgraded" my rack from metal (Atacama) to wood (Stax Blok) not cos it looks better but cos wood can absorb vibrations better and the rack is much heavier and yes it does improve the sound on my wooden floor. Justified worth it, na, but I picked up the rack for £30 on gumtree so why the heck not. But truthfully the P1 is a toy always go for the P2 if budgets are tight the P1 costs the same as a decent second hand older P3 which you can upgrade and end up with something costing the same price as new £750 but delivering something closer to the P6 that cost over £1100 !!!

I don't think the bearing and motor is up to turning the 12mm platterlong term, its too heavy. I upgraded to the 10mm, which is from the P2.
